Customer service at this hotel was really good. Rooms were very clean and fresh linen every day, bed sheets etc really good quality. En-suite bathrooms looked new, great showers if a bit low for anyone over 5'10. The breakfasts were good with plenty choice . The central location of this hotel suited our needs perfectly.

Small but comfortable single room suitable for a business overnight stay but no more.
The whole place, especially the room, needed brightening up. A coat of paint and new carpet would make a world of difference.
Bathroom good and breakfast excellent.
I would stay here again but, unless the double/twin rooms are considerably bigger and a bit
brighter, I wouldn't stay there with my wife for a wekend.

Throughout the service was professional and friendly. Everything was as to be expected from this level of hotel. Despite my room facing a very busy street the noise was almost undiscernable. The Waverley was an excellent place to stay for couples or friends. Classy and clean, not modern or sparse and very close to the tube and shops. There was also a park opposite in Russell Square. The staff were very friendly, helpful and cheerful, especially the conciege who looked after our bags the next day. The food was good plentiful and piping hot. I'll definitely be staying again. It was better than any of the 4 star hotels I've stayed in previously and good value for money.

With the benefit of having stayed in various London hotels, I can say that the relatively small rooms, as mentioned in other reviews, and slightly dated decor in the Waverley are more the rule than the exception.
While there is nothing exceptional about the hotel, the location in Bloomsbury speaks for itself. In addition, the hotel is clean, the staff friendly and service is efficient.
The exception was the self-service buffet breakfast. The layout didn't make sense to accomodate the many people wanting to get to the cooked breakfast. As I am not a morning person, I quickly got annoyed with the slow coffee/tea/toast service and standing in the queue to get to the buffet.
Conclusion: Good value for money if you are looking for an affordable place to stay in central London. If you thrive on breakfast, get in early!

We had stayed here a few years ago but there has definitely been a deterioration in this hotel. General decoration looked jaded & worse for wear. Our double room at 109 was very poor value for money as it looked more like a single room with a double bed in it - in fact you couldn't access the bed from both sides! It wasn't particularly clean & bathroom fittings were tardy.

It all just felt a bit retro and in need of updating, in a city like London with some very cutting edge and modern hotels, the Waverley just felt a bit like I was staying over at a granny's house!! No real complaints though, I just prefer something a bit more special when I'm away.

I have stayed at the Waverley House Hotel...
I have stayed at the Waverley House Hotel before so I already knew pretty much what to expect - the staff are very helpful, the breakfasts are good, but the standard of the rooms is pretty basic - the decor is tired and worn, the bathrooms look grubby (even though they are actually clean) and the air con doesn't go low enough to cool your stifling room so you need to open the windows & tolerate the traffic noise or suffer the heat! This time I was given a single room and in addition to the (expected) issues above, the remote control for the tv didn't work, they provided only one tea bag (because God forbid you may want more than one cuppa!), and the single bed was one of the most uncomfortable beds I've ever tried to sleep in! That said, the location is great, the staff are very pleasant and helpful, and they still do a great breakfast! Just in need of an overhaul.

I paid 149 for a fifth floor suite, which was gigantic, comfortable and pretty quiet. The decoration style is dubious and the furniture is old. But the only real complaint was the prehistoric plumbing in the very run-down old bathroom, which made it very difficult indeed to control water temperature for a shower. And with little touches like a small complementary bottle of wine, they are clearly trying hard. Shame they don't have the resources to make the capital investment the hotel really needs.

Self-serve breakfast hearty and tasty (apart from eggs). One negative - and it's a biggie for me - was having to set up a temporary internet account. It was fiddley and expensive. I ended up going to a nearby internet cafe which was much cheaper and ultimately more convenient (not having to download unnecessary web stuff). If internet isn't a problem, then would absolutely recommend it.

I stayed just one night in a single room for business. It was a very small, but perfectly formed room with somewhat dated decor. Despite that, everything worked well (tv, air conditioning, toilet facilities, shower) and was kept in good condition. It certainly isn't a luxury design accommodation, but for the price it is hard to beat. I would definitely stay there again for a short stay.

Okay, its a budget hotel in central London in Bloomsbury, need I say more. If you think you're going to have a Dorchester type experience, you'd sadly be mistaken. But, for a budget hotel, its central, clean and tidy, staff aren't too rude and the rooms are average. If you pay 59 for a room for the night, then this is what you should expect, which isn't bad at all. The staff were happy to find a home for my bike (which is quite unusual for a central London hotel) and its walking distance to Oxford Street and Leicester Square, and only 10mins to the river!

This hotel is very convenient for a one night stop-over. Close to King's Cross, very close to Russell Square underground. Friendly reception staff. Room, small but perfectly adequate for someone just looking for a bed for the night. Might have felt differently about this if staying longer. Price was good but this is because I got a last minute deal. Otherwise very pricey, but only typical of London prices.

I stay at several hotels in this area...
I stay at several hotels in this area regularly but my usual Grange hotels were unable to accomodate me at short notice this time so I booked into the Waverley. I was in a double room overlooking Southampton Row.
On arrival I was greeted with efficient indifference, but then what do you expect at this price in London? On entering the room I immediately noted how dated it felt. The place was clean enough but the walls were all marked and in need of a coat of emulsion as was the gloss on the skirting. The bathroom was smallish but all there, but the toilet seat needed replacing as it was chipped and marked. It was clean but just didn't look it. As was the bath, a horrible beige colour with outdated taps and shower with mastic peeling around it's edges. Glad I was not staying here with my wife a she would not have liked it one bit!
Huge old fashioned TV with only a few chanels is not good enough in this day and age. Plenty of storage however, and the air conditioning unit (which also looked dated) did work and was reasonably quiet. The windoes opened too and the glazing gave good sound insulation from the road below. I just wish these hotels bleached the net curtains more often, they too looked grubby.
Breakfast was self service and of reasonable quality though the coffee weak. And why do hotel scrambled eggs always look so white? No free range here then! 7/10 for the breakfast in my view.
Overall, a reasonable stay for a business user but I would not be taking my wife here for a break, nor would I reccommend it to families. There are better in the area for the same sort of money, just do your homework if you have the time

My colleague and I were at a conference, so we needed something within a few minutes walk, which the Waverley was. Both our rooms were small singles, but this is normal in London. My concerns about traffic noise from Southampton Row was untested as both our rooms faced inside, rather than on to the main road. The buffet-style breakfast was very good and the staff were helpful.

A few minutes walk from Russell Square tube gets you to this very conveniently located Hotel. Checking in went without hitch. I'd booked a small double and was expecting something a lot smaller. The room was not big by any means, but for some reason I was expecting a cupboard with a bed in it. Room was in need of decoration but it was clean, as were the bed linen and the bathroom. Breakfast was typical hotel buffet style - only grumble was that I wasn't brought the toast that I'd requested but to be honest, I'd filled up on the rest of the fare on offer so no toast wasn't really a problem. As a woman staying on her own I would book this hotel again, I was made to feel very welcome. Check out was straightforward.

In my opinion anyone looking for value for money should consider a stay at Waverley House. The hotel is in an excellent position, close to the British Museum and within walking distance of Leicester Square. It is just a 4 or 5 minute walk up from Holborn station. Russel Square is closer but we don't like using the lifts there.
The staff were really friendly and efficient. The breakfast was very good, though the buffet area can be conjested as it's located in a tight corner.
This is the second time we have stayed and we will not consider any other hotel the next time we visit London. Our room was clean and adequate, though this time the small window had now view, looking to the rear of the hotel. Last time we overlooked the street, which was much better. We really don't need an expensive room / hotel in London, as we are out and about, returning after a show. The Waverley House suits our needs and we will return.

The staff were excellent - obviously well-trained, helpful and very friendly. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the food was excellent. I can see how the buffet might get a bit crowded, but I never experienced any problems. This was excellent value for money, particularly considering its location - look at prices for the Bedford, Russell or Park Inn if you want a comparison. I will definitely use this hotel again.

This is the second time in a row that I have stayed in the hotel and found there to be no hot water in the morning. When I rang reception I was advised to "have a shower later" - not much use when I've got a meeting to get to!!! Plus they only offered me a paltry discount, and that was after much arguing on my part - so I still ended up paying 76 for a hotel room with no hot water! An absolute rip off. The room lacked a shower, despite shower head. Sadly, the exchange heater broke down for our New YEar stay which meant no hot water (except from kettle to sink!). The staff were personable, on their toes and very friendly which helped overcome all blips. What a shame someone cleaned the walls which has stained and bleached the edges of the carpet s- surely the insurance will cover their replacement? Someone also needs to get inside the lift and clean the nooks and crannies - the slightest cob web or old aged stain can leave a lasting negative memory. Overall, the hotel was located excellently for getting into London via Russel Square tube station, and for the New Years Eve fireworks was just awesome. Even the next day, the 10 minute walk to Parliament Square was easy and refreshing to see the New Years Day Mayors Parade. A bit short staffed in the breakfast room, but heh, its the seasonal period and on the whole, the staff present more than did their share to overcome missing staff. Well done Waverley!

The dining area was busy at breakfast time but staff circulated efficiently so there were no unnecessary delays. Food was solid English fare and customers seemed to relish what was on offer.

The Waverley House Hotel was situated in a very nice and very central location; the building was charming and old-fashioned and the people at the reception were polite, though not extremely personable. My room was comfortable and contained all the necessary features; I had a nice bubble bath and some hot chocolate before bed, and though the TV didn't have any premium channels, this wasn't such a big deal. Breakfast was included, served in the attached restaurant; it was served buffet-style, with enough variety and excellent quality.

Very friendly and helpful staff who were happy to give directions and advice on how to get to various places. They were willing to store my bag for 4-5 hours after check-out, which is great if your flight leaves late like mine did. While everything was small, this was a great location in central London, only a few easy blocks from the Tube station. While they ought to consider having free wi-fi for guests (most U.S. hotels do), there is a Costa coffee a few storefronts down that has free wi-fi.

I would have liked a "maybe" box for the question "would you stay here again?". Good points: The hotel is in a good location and for the money represents reasonable value. The rooms are air-donditioned and adequate for somewhere to sleep. The bed linen and bathroom were clean.
Bad points: I would not want to spend any time in these rooms, the singles are very small and the bathroom extremely so. You have to manoeuvre around the door to move around in there. The corridors are shabby and the carpets stained. The room was a bit tired. My biggest issue was that there was a major power cut in the area during the evening. This was not the hotel's fault (obviously) but it was over by about 10.30 - 11pm and yet at 7.15 the next morning they were only then resetting the boiler. There was no hot water at all. This was extremely poor. The lift was also out of action at midnight when we returned to the hotel. OK for us as we are able-bodied but there are a LOT of stairs at this hotel and I imagine it caused some people considerable distress. In my view the hotel should have taken action to ensure hot water would be available for guests the next morning, not waited 7 or 8 hours to reset the boiler.

The rooms were very well equipped with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, cookies, full range of products in the bathroom. Breakfast had all the variety you could think of and plenty of quantity. THe furniture in the lobby looked like it needed to thoroughly cleaned. The lift looked like it hadn't been dusted or cleaned in any way for months. Likewise my room didn't look lik it had been dusted or vacuum cleaned for a while. There were very long female hairs all over the place and I even found one in the bed!
The menu in the brasserie promised much, but the Lamb Shank was so overcooked that I could not cut into the meat and had to complain. To give them their due, the steak that came after the complaint was cooked exactly to my specification.
The breakfast buffet was tepid. the sausages were overcooked and the scrambled egg looked like a wobbly yellow jelly - one solid lump of shiny wobbly plastic looking stuff. I may be doing the egg a disservice; it may have tasted delicious; I just could not bring myself to try.
In the main, the staff were pleasant and helpful, however. The receptionsits who were on duty when I checked out need to be trained in customer service. In every other hotel I have ever stayed in (and I stay in lots) I am given a printout of the bill so that I can read through it and check that no errors have crept in. The pair on receptionists who were on duty when I checked out thought that my request was very novel and they couldn't understand why I would not just pay when they told me the total amount of the bill. As it happens, there was no problem with the bill. It's their attitude that I object to.

The hotel has obviously undergone some refurbishment and was very tidy, but the bedroom furniture was a mix of out of date and new.
I was concerned about the tv being situated so close to the bedroom door as I had to manuevre my way round it with a small suitcase, and would be worried about how quickly someone would be able to exit the room in the case of an emergency.

After getting no sleep or not enough sleep...
After getting no sleep or not enough sleep where I was staying; independent hostels dormitory style in London, I opted to go back to staying in hotels. I don't like to do this, as they are overpriced, but when the dark circles under my eyes become that bad, I must. Laterooms can be good for that, although when you count it against other currencies, it's not. Last Saturday, I called a hotel I knew in Notting Hill who told me they had availability. I checked the room, and it was hideous, and 50. I went to the library around the corner and in 15 minutes on laterooms.com, I had found a hotel in Bloomsbury, an area I had only been to a few times. I took the underground and checked in not long after check-in time. Lovely old hotel this one. Lovely room. Very clean, quiet, has a lift for luggage. Really charming. I was a bit perturbed when the concierge girl ran my credit card for 614 for the room when it was only 49. My room number was 614. The window in the room was good; ventilation, and one of those British windows you could open wide or open at the top. I was at the side and back of the hotel, though, and I could hear conversations from the two cafes in the lane way which was very annoying. And the guy across from me said to someone, "why does she have a DO NOT DISTURB on their door" which I thought was odd that he would say that. Was he expecting suicide? I'm a public figure, not a suicidal maniac, although, I guess there are a lot of public figures that are, right!! But yes, a lovely hotel. The staff the next day were super nice and so helpful and bright. They had an old-fashioned luggage storage service which was efficient and charming. I had a late lunch about 5pm, and had earlier eaten at 7.30am. The lunch was at Cagney's in the lane way; it was terrible, really terrible. Poor Jimmy Cagney!! They want to use his name but it was awful, as was the place a shambles and dreadful dreadful staff. Don't eat there. It didn't fill me up at all, so I went to the bistro at the hotel and bought a bowl of French Fries (unusual for me to eat such things, but they were great). Breakfast at the hotel was available all morning, but I think most of these people came from the most hick towns in Britain; not anyone I'd want to share my time with!! Really odd for this type of hotel, although I guess it's the price. Breakfast was terrible, though. A shambles. They need more staff and perhaps another room! I'd stay here again, though. The area has parks nearby for jogging or walking or bird watching, and the Shaftsbury area and Tottenham Court Road are not far away.

I rushed to the reception, then back to the restaurant, my heart racing. When a receptionist/manager called Marcin came out of the kithcen, I told him my bag was stolen. After a few questions about where did I leave the bag etc, he told me he took my bag and left it in the kitchen to teach me not to leave my bag on the chair. Needless to say, I did not find such "lesson" helpful at all, not did I need that kind of stress first thing in the morning. I though about teaching him a lesson and report that the purse had gone from my bag (it did not), but truth to be said, I was in a hurry and also felt a great desire to leave the hotel mmediately, never to return again.

Well what can I say, I checked in and was told there was no hot water, the boiler was broken. I went to my room and the key didn't work. BAck down to reception and had to get another one. Got into my (very small) room to be greeted by a view of a brick wall. It was a hot day so opened the window to the smell of everything the kitchen was cooking..uurrrgghh. Sat down to watch a bit of telly and then noticed there was a 2 inch gap between the bottom of my door and the carpet. I could hear everything outside and no doubt everyone else could hear me. I looked at the other doors on my landing and they were all the same....big gaps!!!! I stuffed the gap with one of the towels from the bathroom and started to watch telly. It was a noisy night. Got up to have a shower and even though I was told the boiler had been fixed, mine was a very cold shower....not good. After this I went for breakfast in the diningroom. Don't believe the other reviews, it was very poor and I had to ask for coffee three times. I insisted for a reduction in the room rate due to the shower and got 30 pounds off. This hotel is simply not worth the 159 pounds rate. The Park Inn on Russell Square (where I usually stay) is the same rate but is an entirely different experience, one which I reccommend. The hotel is an old beautiful and characterful...
The hotel is an old, beautiful and characterful building with a broad staircase that sweeps round an old-fashioend lift. Very nice. It's located near a square and is near some small restaurants (including Italian, and Greek down the main road) and at least one "real" pub with some real ale in it. The area had a local feel to it, like a small town, and people were friendly at giving me directions. Super.
The hotel receptionists were polite, efficient, and had a pleasant and calm manner. However, they didn't smile which interfered with my initial feeling of fun and pleasure at being stood there. However, there were free quality magazines (Time, Newsweek) and newspaper (Telegraph, if I remember correctly) and one receptionist fetched me a brochure of places to go. These places were restaurants, theatres, etc. listed by category, not locality and were spread all over London. Not much use for a 1-night stay.
The room was clean and comfy, big enough. There were too few plastic pots of milk (4) - I need 2 per drink to notice the effect, as they're only small. It's a small thing but an iritation. The TV had extra channels (Freeview?) so there was more to see than regular TV. The bathroom had no bath (no problem), just a shower and the usual basin and loo. The shower head was absolutely fixed to the wall - fixed height (too low) and fixed angle (straight down) so I had to bend my knees a bit and stand next to the wall. And I couldn't lift off the shower head to rinse the parts that fixed heads cannot reach (I'm not THAT acrobatic).
Breakfast is found in a fairly modern-looking L-shaped long room populated with small aquare tables and hard chairs. There was plenty of fruit juice - very nice. The food was self-service which usually helps you get exactly what you want. However, the only eggs were scrambled and all the food was just warm rather than hot - fine for a warm day but not what you'd want on a chilly morning. The staff were a bit cool too! Everyone working here appears to be foreign (European). There's more chance of friendly chit-chat with people born here and who therefore find casual language in English natural and easy. They could smile though! However, the worst thing about the breakfast room is that there are two TVs, one at either end. Sitting there you get an unwanted stereo effect that is out of synch. The effect is very odd, irritating and nausiating.
The place was fine for function, although I'd hesitate about a stay with a lady friend. For that I'd like a better breakfast area, newer refurbishment in the room, and people that smile!

A fully representative example of all that is bad about hotels in London. An appalling small room, with clapped out furniture and food that was clearly the cheapest available.
This is the kind of place that makes me ashamed to be British.

I stayed at this hotel on the 16th and 17th November, I have got to say that my room (although it could do with a lick of paint) was very nice, the bathroom could do with replacing but the shower was better than mine at home!! When we arrived the person on the front desk was very pleasant and made us feel very welcome. Breakfast was a buffet and was constantly being topped up, the waiters were always on hand to fill your coffee cup (I hadn't even finished my last mouthful and the waiter was waiting to fill it up) I was really pleased with the staff and the hotel, like I said before the hotel could do with a lick of paint but I would definitely stay there again. It was in walking distance of Covent Garden and Oxford Street and the West End, the staff are also very helpful with giving you directions!! I would recommend people to stay there, but at the end of the day your not going to please everyone!

The Waverly staff, restaurant and front desk particularly, were equal parts negligent, unsympathetic and hostile. This is unfortunate as the condition of my room and the hotel were very good given the cost. The way communication is transmitted among employees needs to be tidied up as there was much misinformation given regarding check-in, and check-out procedures, along with general attitudes. Restaurant service was barely there - once having waited for nearly three hours for dinner to be delivered to my room.

When I checked in I found the reception...
When I checked in I found the reception staff to be efficient and friendly although I found the decor in the room to be a little out of date and felt it could have done with a refit. However, it was clean and everything seemed to work at first.
My issue with the hotel is regarding an incident in the morning when I discovered that the hot tap in the bath didn't work, which meant that a bath or shower was not an option. I requested use of another room, but as the hotel was full this was not a possibility. Reception offered to send someone to have a look at it, but as I was in a hurry and I could not be certain that they would be able to fix it I declined this and made do with the sink.
I asked for a discount when checking out shortly after. The receptionist checked with the manager, who offered 10%. I did not feel this was sufficient as it still meant paying just under 90 for a room without a working bath or shower. The manager refused to increase the discount firstly claiming that I could have had a bath, which showed that he hadn't understood the problem, then saying that I should have reported it to be fixed, at which point I reminded him that I had but there wasn't time for this. I found his manner abrupt and dismissive and because of this I would not consider staying at the Waverley again. Their comments card talks about high levels of customer service and hoping that they make you feel special. This is all well and good but when it came to resolving this particular issue I felt they fell short on both points.
Room was clean but very dated and tired. Bathroom old fashioned (beige) and shower blocked with limescale. Airconditioning was not functioning. No attempt made to fix it, the person on reception just showed me a list of 15 or so other rooms where the a/c wasn't functioning either. Window eventially unlocked but opened out into central well of the hotel which had been boarded over to carry the air conditioning units! Very hot night, room temperature 28 degrees! I would not stay here again and would certainly not recommend it to anyone.

The hotel is well placed and convenient to the tube. The room was clean, of good size and well laid out. The disappointing thing was the shower. These days I don't expect to require a PhD to get the temperature to be other than scalding or ice cold. Very temperamental. I also expect to be able to move the shower head which won't be locked solid due to limescale. The standard of food was good. The restaurant is small and is not well laid out. Self service is fine but with too many tables, it is fight to get to the servery. Complimentary paper offered, accepted and detailed, then forgotten about with the apology being a smile and a shrug. Overall, it is not a bad hotel but misses a thumbs up due to disappointing me in the basics. Sort the bathrooms out!
