The Wimbledon Hotel

The room that we were given in the hotel was nowhere near as nice as the photos on its web site and on Laterooms.com led us to believe. It was much smaller and less luxurious. It was also a hot and noisy room.

A home from home

A very comfortable room with excellent facilities. It was clean and homely although there were initially only one set of towels when I had indicated that I reserved the room for two people. I received a good deal using LateRooms, it seemed a little pricey otherwise. The service was very good and the breakfast room was bright and inviting.

The Wimbledon Hotel

An elegant hotel situated on Worple Road. We chose the hotel because of its proximity to the AELTC. The owner was very pleasant and treated us very well. I was delighted by the communication between him and us before we arrived, which ensured he was expecting us when we did arrive. The room was light and airy and the tea and coffee facilities were good.
All in all a perfect place to stay for the night. Thanks

Nice but cold

I found the hotel very modern and nice the only fault was that my room was very cold and I had a kettle, cups, milk, sugar but no coffee or tea in order to make either. They did no have any one on reception to ask for tea or coffee or sort the heat out on my return in the late evening.

Wimbledon hotel

My stay at the Wimbledon hotel was mixed. The room was on the basement level, pretty small but clean and comfortable. The worst thing was that you could hear absolutely everything that was going on above you. This was especially frustrating when the people in the room above me got up to check out at 0445. When I mentioned this to the owner in the morning he just scuttled off, not to be seen again.
The breakfast was ok but nothing to write home about, no butter for the toast and the fry up would feed a small child but thats about it. Not worth nearly a £100 a night.

Disappointing

We were greeted by the painter decorator who gave us the key and said "keep going up the stairs until you find it" !! The room was nicely decorated if a little small but did have everything we needed. We never saw anyone the entire stay and when we came to check out and pay there was no one around so we phoned the number of the hotel. I had clearly woken up the person on the other end of the line who asked me to put my mobile number with the key and they would call and sort out payment later. As we left apparently the owner turned up and appologised, a little too late!

Not yet a 'boutique' hotel!

Work in progress at the hotel means it is a little over priced for a so-called 'boutique' place.
Nevertheless the owner was very good. I'd recommend they include breakfast with the price as it begins to lost out to local competition.

Average due to redecoration but will be good when completed!

Arrived at hotel and there was no issue over booking in slightly earlier than expected. It is a short walk to the centre of Wimbledon which offers a host of attractions. The hotel is being decorated currently and consequently there was a freshly decorated room to enjoy. On the slight downside, the smell of fresh paint was initially off-putting but you get used to it. Once decoration has been carried out completely, this will be a nice hotel to stay at. The shower was excellent, facilities ok and breakfast had plenty of options. Would recommend.

Grubby hotel.More like 2 star than 4 star.

This Hotel was very expensive, and way below the standard expected of a 4 Star Hotel. It was more on the level of a 2 Star, with a grubby room,a smell of raw sewage at times, broken furniture, and insufficient cups and tea spoons.(They did compensate with free breakfast to 2 days). The Hotel was being redecorated, and wet paint was present on the stair wells and room doors,as well as the strong smell of wood filler and paint combined. Location was good for Wimbledon with only a short walk to the centre.

Wouldn't recommend without major improvements

We booked an "Executive Double Room", because, according to their website these are "Lovingly designed to create an individual ambience fusing elements of classical, modern and oriental design. These rooms are more spacious with desks and easy chairs." The reality was that the room was really tight. The double bed was so small that I thought I might fall out if I roll over. The "desk and easy chair" hardly fit in the room and were pushed under the window. There was a built in wardrobe that had such an awkward shape that we couldn't fit our bags in, so had to leave them on the floor in the room. This made the already small room even tighter. The ensuite bathroom was also extremely small, you could hardly turn around. If these "executive" rooms are really bigger than the standard double rooms, I can only imagine that they must be tiny. As for "lovingly designed" rooms, ours had a somewhat Moroccan feel to it, which means there were some Moroccan lampshades and the doors to the wardrobe and ensuite were carved wood. It really didn't do much for the room though, as the rest of the room was old and the finish was really poor (think cheap mdf/plastic finishing). There was no rug in the room either, which meant stepping out of bed onto freezing tiles.
Also, from a true "boutique" hotel, I would expect much more attention to detail. As an example, we were not given any individual shampoos and shower gels, but there was a big "value pack" shampoo in the shower that guest after guest use.
It should be said that the hotel is in the process of being renovated, so in the hallway there is old, partly ripped carpet and partially sanded handrails.
The website claims that the hotel "is truly a family owned and managed business offering Guests a high level of personal service and a home from home environment." The reality is that the only interaction we had with the staff was the handover of the room keys and the settling of the bill.
In summary, I would say the hotel has all the potential in the world given its convenient proximity to Wimbledon, Richmond/Kingston, and Central London but currently it is simply not realising it.
The website and its photos (having just looked at them again) really do a great job of disguising all these shortcomings.

Welcoming, Comfortable and Good Value

I stopped in the single room, which is small but nicely presented and very clean and tidy. I was called to check my arrival time the day before, and was made very welcome on arrival. I didn't eat breakfast but can't comment. The hotel is far enough away from Wimbledon centre to be pleasantly quiet and overall good value for this part of London.

Nice family type hotel - new owner looking to build on the current business and reputation and is already upgrading the facilities/building interior. The bedrooms are fine, mine was a spacious family sized room with a good sized bed and excellent decor. The bedrooms are deciorated well and presentable - the entrance, foyer and hall/stairs need upgrading and are getting it.

Review of 2 night stay 10/10/10

I chose this hotel from the pictures and description on the laterooms.com etc. The room was modern and per the photograph but although the bed area was very contemporary and as per the photographs, the dresser on which the superb TV and metal tables and chairs spoilt it.
The room was very clean with a very modern and contemporary bathroom but as it was at the highest point of the hotel, I found it cold especially during the night. Although reading the hotel directory and I was told by the proprietor if I needed anything just ask, there were only very minimal tea bags and milk and no shower gel just liquid soap at the sink and shampoo in the shower. Consequently I used the liquid soap. The added touch of orchid petals on the towels were nice.
The proprietor as the other hotel staff were very friendly and even carried my heavy bags to the room. The hotel I felt was a bit too far out of Wimbledon town centre to walk, however that said only £4 in a taxi.
The hotel is self certified 4* but having stayed in many 4* hotels, I would rate it a maximum 3*. I thought to charge for breakfast separate over the £90 per night was a bit steep for such a hotel and did not really like having to make a choice the evening before.
A paint of the public areas and replacement of the very worn staircase carpet which was threadbare in places would not go a miss.
It was satisfactory for my needs, but not a hotel I would look at staying at again during what will now be my regular trips to London.

Beautiful Rooms

This Hotel, was very nice to stay in. The customer service was second to none and nothing was ever too much trouble. My room was lovely. Shower pressure a bit slow, but this was a minor thing and in no way ruined our stay. Would definatly recommend this hotel and will be looking to visit again in the future!

Friendly staff. Room lacking slightly.

Stayed in executive double. Very friendly staff. Interior of hotel looks dated. Room decor finished to a moderately low standard. No bed head. Small but comfortable bed. No bath, just shower. No take away toiletries. I would rate room as no more than 3 star. Having said that, I have stayed in worse in the general vicinity and the staff were very friendly...

Bank Holiday City Break

The hotel was satisfactory, and given London rates, good value for money. Car parking was included, which was pleasing, and the nearest acces to the Underground (Wimbledon on the District Line) was in easy walking distance.
The one feature my wife and I did not liike was the fact that our room was at the top of the builiding, which meant climbing five flights of stairs. There is no lift. This is the room reserved for 'laterooms' bookings. If this is a problem we were told that other rooms could be requested before arrival.

Does the job

Nice and clean small hotel with a bit of quirkiness. Very nice staff! Our room was clean and functional, the fresh orchid with the towels was a nice touch and generally the decoration was a nice standard. No phone in the room was a bit of a downside (we had to go down three flights of stairs to ask to book a taxi f ex) and the fact that you cannot check in late means this is not a hotel to book if you are unsure about arrival times. No hairdryer that we could find and no toiletries apart from a shampoo available in the bathroom, which was a disappointment. The bathroom could also do with some hooks to hang wet towels on to dry.
There is no night time reception, instead you get a key to the front door as well as the room. This is OK but our key did not work very well in the front door... The overall experience was nice though - clean and quiet and generally pleasant. The Wimbledon Hotel certainly met our expectations for the money we paid.

Nice local hotel, probably one of the best available for the location

Really enjoyed staying at the Wimbledon Hotel. On the small side for a hotel, however great location, and the best on offer considering the alternatives. Particularly liked the hotel's character with each room being decorated to a different theme. Would definitely stay again for a short break in Wimbledon. And the staff were very friendly to make the whole experience that bit more pleasant. Also liked the finishing touch of there being a DVD player in the room if you're looking for a quieter weekend.
