Celebrating our th Wedding Anniversary we decided to...
Celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary we decided to take our two grown up daugthers and their respective partners to London to be tourists for a long week-end.
Travelling just 25 miles for Surrey we arrived early and were able to drop all our bags in one of the allocated rooms but our luggage would have been equally safe had we been asked to leave it with their reception staff.
Our three rooms were very clean and well appointed and each had working air conditioning. Decor is classic and in keeping with the area. The cleaning standards were high and attention to detail, (tea/coffee/biscuits/etc), couldn't be faulted. We even received a Wedding Anniversary card ! That's what we call ABCD service (above and beyond the call of duty ! ). Very much appreciated and will be remembered.
To give a balanced review I do have to report just one small grumble and that is with the floorboards creaking that other reviewers have mentioned. The building is clearly well looked after and you do get used to the noise after a day or two but it does reverberate.
The hotel location was superb for us. Just 2 minute walk to St James's Underground Station, 3 minutes to Westminister Abbey, 7 minutes to Parliament Square and the Houses of Parliament, 15 minutes to Buckingham Palace or Trafalgar Square and 30 minutes to Covent Garden. We really enjoyed the convenience of the location.
The hotel is situated above their pub/restaurant, but as other reviewers have reported you hear no noise from it in the rooms. The evening food we had was fine and the helpings generous. Continental breakfast is also served here and was OK.
Overall I would recommend this hotel to others and is slightly higher than a three star in my book. If we decide to stay in London overnight again I would have no hesitation in just re-booking a room here.

The hotel itself is above the pub, with access from a separate entrance next door. Overall the room was a decent standard and not bad value for money when booked as a double although if staying alone it would have been quite an expensive rate. Very clean and tidy. Good sized room. The bathroom was OK but a little dated. The TV reception was poor when viewing via Freeview. Service at reception was good with friendly staff. We didn't try any food but I have been to the pub before and it serves a good traditional pint.

We had a great time staying here. Hotel is not in the most attractive setting being surrounded by large office buildings BUT is very well placed to easily reach many of the top attractions ie Big ben 5-10 min walk Phantom of the opera 15-20min London eye 15min St James park 5-10 min.
The route we took from the hotel to Phantom was to exit the hotel then cross straight over and walk left to the first right turning(Dartmouth st) walk down there till you see a small pub on the right cross the road and in the corner you will see some steps( Cockpit steps) go down there cross the road and you are in the park walk straight through the park and you are onto The mall walk towards the arch opposite end to palace then up steps on left and through onto Cockspur st head left then you will see Haymarket across on right a short but very scenic route. Excellent receptionist upon our stay was very friendly and polite. Room was standard, but clean.

this hotel was fabulous. "IGA" yes that was her name, the receptionist was excellent and a very helpful young lady. We got the room on a special deal 40% off the orginal price. Our room was first class , air con worked, plenty of hot water, clean sheets and towels. complementray bath and shower kit. Complementary water on arrival. Tea & coffee making facilities. We had a room on the 4th floor oppisite a renovation of a building. the work started at 7.30am on Saturday but noise was acceptable. If you are planning a mid week get a room away from the building work. the hotel cannot help this it is called progress. We never heard the customers in the pub below or when outside talking. I will stay at this hotel again. They even let us store our bags in reception while we went sight seeing during our second day. We did have a special occasion to celebrate and Iga made it absoloutely wonderful. if i had to give a downside and this is only minor there was no radio just the TV. This is a very clean hotel . I spoke to a business woman in the heart of the city. she places her clients to include VIP,s not celebretary staus at the Sanctuary hotel. You are close to Big ben, the london eye etc, and four tube stops to the heart of the West End.
A taxi from the heart of the West End to the hotel door only cost 11 pounds at 2am in the morning. To whoever reads this the hotel is a joy to stay in.

Stayed in August. The hotel was pretty good however the aircon was broken the windows didn't open very wide and as a result the room was about 40 degrees plus. The reception couldn't do anything about it and it was so hot i got about two hours sleep. Breakfast was a good contential selction. We ate in the pub and got pie and mash, we asked for gravy which came in a small tommy sauce pot. I don't think the staff have quite grasped the concept of gravy!

The hotel was a great location to a nearby wedding we were attending, and also a short walking distance to local attractions (Big Ben, Westminster Abbey) and shops and restaurants. The staff were very friendly especially Sean, who arranged for us to have a later check out and also took care of our luggage once we had checked out.
Although the hotel is located above a pub we heard no noise and there was no rowdiness outside, our only complaint was that the room was a little on the warm side. Apart from that we had a fantastic stay and would definately recommend it!

Very clean and comfortable with everything you might expect of a quality hotel (including chocolates!) The staff were really friendly and accommoding and we were very impressed with the overall standard. It took a long time on the internet to find a hotel at this price with good reviews and we were not disappointed, a great little hotel in an ideal central location, we would highly recommend it.

What a fantastic address, just a few hundred yards from Westminster Abbey and a similar distance from the tube. The room was adequate. It's an old building and the floors were creaky. Just enough room for two. The bathroom was fine with a very good shower. Staff very friendly (both in the hotel and in the pub below). Shame there's no breakfast, but a cafe and Pret are both a short walk away.

The Sanctuary House Hotel fit the bill perfectly. We hailed a cab easily outside and after the celebrations, had a drink in the hotel pub. Staff were friendly and helpful and didnt seem to mind that we were sipping in our wedding finery!
A nice hotel, small and friendly, clean, nice condition. I was very wary as have never travelled alone before and had picked this hotel for the locality and room service availibility. The receptionist was welcoming, the room was lovely, and the added extra complimentary bottled water was a nice touch. I found my air con wasn't working but the helpful man at the front desk at that point went and fixed it straight away for me. The room service was prompt and the room was clean and comfortable. The only gripe I had was that the floorboards creaked in the room above and so was kept awake longer than planned. I could hear the pub downstairs from my bathroom but not from my room and the music kept me entertained whilst bathing and didn't go on too late : )

We arrived via Victoria station An easy -...
We arrived via Victoria station (An easy 10-15min walk) onto the hotel a little later than we stated when making the booking. Wee problem, our booking was not there? So after 10 mins we were booked in (Not a good start) but we found the hotel staff too be freindly, the room was clean and we did get the four poster bed! Being it was a last minute affair to fly down and see London, we were pleased so far. The room was on the small size and the bed was on the large size!
We ate in the bar, again the staff were friendly, serving good beer (Real ales), good food and all at a fair price , so we had a good feeling about the place.
The hotel is in a very central location for all the sites of London, easy to walk to or take the tube (St James - Which is near-by). The room rates were was we felt value for money, plus it was the Valentine's weekend. A nice touch by the hotel was the single Rose placed on the bed 14th.
The breakfast that is set-out we found to be fresh and ample, you can help yourself with tea & coffee being served to you (NB: Full English was an extra 3.50p per head). We had problems on the 15th, we arrived with 25 mins to they stop serving breakfast (Along with others) there was no tables or food left and we all had to wait 20 mins for a table. By that time we were told that we would have to take the full English. So Ok, the moment was saved........the breakfast came (After a further delay), it was served and we were told that they would have to clear-up soon as they stop serving breakfast 30mins ago? Yet we had to wait on them???? So not happy! The breakfast was good, the rush not!
But they once again redeemed themselve on the Monday, all was back to normal and a good fresh spread to be found.
We both agree that the noise would be a problem Monday to Friday and being we had the front facing room, the dray on Monday woke my partner up. However it was very quite over the long weekend, with noise not being a problem from the street or the bar below.
So if you are looking for a place to stay over the weekend, see the site, this is a good location so try this hotel. Enjoy!

The Sanctuary is a relatively small friendly place to stay which is ideally situated for the sights around the centre of London. We were questionned at breakfast time regarding whether we were eating a breakfast that had not been paid for and I had to explain the position. When booking out we had to tell the story again. The receptionist changed the story given the previous day saying that we had our original room, as booked, but I can't see how, our room was set out for one person (dressing gow, towels). This is a small hotel with basic amenities, but with a standard of service and accommodation equal to much larger hotels. The rooms we had were modern, well decorated and clean with ensuite facilities. The restaurant is in the pub below the hotel, but its 'pie and pint' food was good quality and varied. We dined in on our first night and the only drawback is that, being open to the public, it can get noisy and invasive. Not best suited for families.
Breakfast however was fine. Had a 'superior' room which was very small. It had a large 4 poster bed but you could feel the springs through the mattress which didn't lend itself to a restful sleep. Perfect location for Westminster - 2 mins to Abbey / Parliament/Underground. Staff helpful, room clean, breakfast ok. All in all expensive for what you get but would stay again if standard room available at a much lower rate.

This hotel was a delight! The hotel iteself is charmingly decorated and our room was much larger than previous rooms on our trip, with amenities such as a tea/coffee service in the room. The restaurant/pub was wonderful - smoke-free, warmly decorated, great food, and the wait staff was wonderful. In addition, the tube stop was only one block away. Westminister Abby and Parliament were also only 1-2 blocks away. My sister and I were well taken care of by a very helpful staff. I Can't say enough good things about this hotel, and the price was very reasonable. We'll definitely be back!

Great Hotel. Excellent value considtering its location at the heart of Wesminster. Modern comfortable room. Nice and quiet. The only disappointment was the food. Fullers pride themselves on this hotel's "Ale and Pie House" on the ground floor. The pies on both nights were rubbish. You would not get away with pies like that in the north of England :-). I'm talking here about a pre-cooked (hard, dry) shortcrust pastry outer, with a spoon of 'stew' to fill it just before serving, with a nondescript puff pastry lid. Served with I presume microwaved veg, yellowing broccoli, tasteless carrotts. But serously is is a nice hotel. I would definitely stay here again when next in the area, but would eat elsewhere. Once you have eaten, come back here later for the 3-4 real ales on the bar.

This was a short overnight stay for my wife and I as we were attending a business function and therefore, we spent little time in the hotel itself. We arrived at different times; I checked in first and having travelled from Reception to the fourth floor with a suitcase and only 20 minutes to shower and change, I found that the room key didn't work! back down to Reception where the receptionist whilst helpful, wasn't too concerned (she was checking in another guest!).
The room was fine - clean and spacious for London; it was a superior double so one would hope that it would be. Took me a while to find the aircon controls and to realise that a wall heater operated independently from the aircon - and had a separate switch!!
The bed was large - a modern four-poster - and comfortable BUT....... I was obviously in the room that someone who wrote an earlier review stayed in! The mattress was not one double mattress but two singles, therefore, there was a 'ridge' in the middle of the bed - not good news and uncomfortable in the middle of the night.
The bathroom was more than adequate with a good shower. Breakfast the next morning was well-cooked (I had the full English) and the service was friendly and efficient.
The hotel is in a very good location for visitors wanting to be in walking distance of the River Thames, Westminster, the London Eye, Whitehall, and Trafalgar Square and it is a short taxi ride from Victoria Station.

We really enjoyed our long weekend here. Although we were on the first floor, directly above the pub, the room was very quiet - only a bit of noise for a few minutes at closing time on Saturday (perfectly acceptable). The room was just a standard double, but was comfortable, clean, had plenty of space and also had air-con. The location is great, very close to plenty of pubs (a good number serving breakfast) and restaurants. Also; only a ten minute walk (or 1 tube stop) to the victoria theatres - very handy. Most attractions in the westmister area are within 10 mins walk - excellent. Also a good number of little shops near the St James Park Tube Sation (2 minute walk). The reception staff were very helpful, even letting us into the room 30mins early so that we could get to our matinee show in good time. The TV reception is a bit poor, but they do provide sky sports channels.

Not clear from the original booking that only a continental breakfast was served with cooked options at extra cost. Breakfast comprised one slice of cheap sliced bread each. There were two bowls of tinned fruit and some nasty sliced ham available. The boiled eggs were just out of the fridge - cooked heaven knows when. Breakfast room understaffed. Not a good experience. Room was clean and OK but the matress springs gave us an uncomfortable night, a simple mattress cover would have cushioned them. Not a standard to expect for 120 per night

This however, did not detract from the overall enjoyment of this hotel. A gem of a find in London, and so quiet - even on a Saturday evening. Reception is on the first floor accessible by lift or stairs and is a welcome change from mirror/chrome decorations favoured now.
