A Hidden Gem

We stayed at the Thistle for our Honeymoon night. Just refurbished the hotel is fresh and clean. We initially has a standard double room which was very small and disappointing. As I wanted the day to be special I contacted reception who were very friendly and helpful. We were then upgrades to a junior executive room. The room was lovely! Large clean and spacious. The only drawback I could see for anyone is of a larger than average size, would be the bathroom which is beautifully decorated but quite small. The staff are lovely, very friendly and professional. The hotel location is perfect. Trafalgar square. Leicester Square, Piccadilly all only a few minutes walk away. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a quiet London hotel in a good location. There was a car park opposite also for anyone driving.

Great Staff

The most outstanding thing about this hotel (apart from its excellent position), was the staff were cheerful, understanding, knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly. This made our stay very pleasurable. The only small gripe would be that it was quite pricey and a lower price would definitely make me choose this hotel again. Adequate sized room with very comfortable beds.

Good location

The best thing going for this hotel is it's location...and it charges a hefty fee for it. The rooms are modern and clean. The huge king size bed is full of pillows and leaves little extra space for moving around, let alone a plae to put all those pillows when you go to bed. There is no mini bar. There is a pot for boiling water for instant coffee or tea. However, the maids were not consistent in replenishing the supply of coffee, tea, creamer, or sugar on a daily basis. Breakfast was an extra fee and cost more than going around the corner to a local pub or restaurant.
This hotel is in a perfect spot for visiting the west end. It is nearly eqidistant from Piccadilly, Charing Cross and Leicester Square tube stops. It is a mere 2 minute walk to the National portrait Gallery and less than 5 minutes to Leicester Square. Having gone to London to go to the theater the hotel was great for being able to go to matinee then to the hotel to freshen up and be able to go to an evening show as well (if one wanted to see that many shows). But the hotel charges a high price for this convienence, in my opinion a little to high a price, even for London.

Disappointing

We were on the 4th floor and the only lift broke down. The stairs are bare concrete and the handrails are hanging from the walls on 2 of the flights. If there was a fire this would be lethal. My trousers were covered in cement dust on reaching the ground floor. Reception staff were most helpful and polite but sadly the bar staff didn't speak much English. The barmaid didn't know what a liqueur was.The receipt that was later e-mailed to me has my address as a mews in Leeds---- I live in Mid Wales.Shall not rush back here on our trips to London.

Beautiful hotel, excellent service.Standard rooms were exceptionally small, inadequate hanging space

This beautiful hotel is well located with friendly and helpful staff.
The hot and cold drinks in the lounge bar were very expensive
and there is limited seating for groups of 6 or more in the bar area.
A great hotel for a special occasion,

Phantom Weekend Break

We arrived at the hotel approx 12:30 and could not get into room earlier than 14:30 but staff took our luggage and we had a walk around London.
All the staff we encountered in bar, restaurant or reception were very helpful and we had booked a standard room which was very comfortable, very clean and nice and warm.
We had booked the hotel for its location as we were going to see Phantom at He Majesty's Theatre, which was 5 minutes walk away, but I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and we will be back later in the year when we go down for another show.

Cant fault the location or friendliness of the staff.
Only a few very minor irritations,
Firstly the newly refurbished room had a toilet that you could not use that easily... When sitting down on the loo, ones legs were virtually touching the shower enclosure wall.
Im not a particularly tall man standing at 177cms and my girlfriend is 169 cms both of us are of an average build.
The other point was that the additional towels were stored in the drawers of the wall unit in the room , so necessitating a phone call to reception.
We didn't actually eat in the hotel, but had to wash out one of the cups before using it because the previous occupant must have put a used spoon in one of the cups

Service like a five star, rooms compact but really comfortable. Cleanliness excellent. Location could not have been better. Have stayed in dozens of hotels all over London for both business and pleaure this is one of the best. Would recommend and definately re-visit.

This is a fantastic hotel for a short break to London. Perfectly located Next to the portrait gallery and trafalger square. 5 mins walk to the theatre and soho. Staff were very helpful and room was clean, modern and beds were very comfortable. We didn't have breakfast as we visited a friend in Camden for breakfast and we thought £15 a little pricey.

Quiet hotel in very central location

Comfortable hotel about a minute's walk from Trafalgar Square. approaching it at night makes you wonder if you are heading up a dodgy back alley, but seems quite safe. The advantage of the back alley location is that it is surprisingly quiet for being right at the heart of London. Breakfast was standard buffet affair, but having ploughed through a hearty plateful I was glad that they appeared to have forgotten my toast... Definitely would stay again for early meetings in central London.

A welcomed, enjoyable, high quality stay - Relaxing

We booked the hotel through Late Rooms as we needed a cheap, good quality hotel near to the theatre we had tickets to for my girlfriends birthday.
The hotel allowed us to book in early (although unable to go to the room) and leave our bags in their store room which allowed us to start the London experience early.
We were always greeted by pleasant, helpful and professional hotel staff. The room was superb, clean, tidy, comfortable and a bed to envy.
I have a medical condition that requires equipment to plug into a socket over night. The hotel not only was accommodative to my needs they also sent a member of staff to the room to ensure my room was suitable prior to being given keys. I've never had this excellent customer experience before - well done front of house staff.
We did however experience one problem that I'd like to be addressed: The cost of breakfast is£16.99 per person. I feel this is somewhat rather over priced and we actively looked to eat outside the hotel in the morning for a cheaper breakfast. The reception staff noted that there is currently a special deal of £10 per person for breakfast - which we took up. However we failed to collect a voucher from the reception desk (which we didn't know we had to do) and therefore we charged at the more expensive rate. £10 pp is a much more acceptable price for breakfast, the food was excellent quality and more than enough for this hungry tum to eat (first thing in the morning). The waiting staff we polite and helpful throughout.
From the outside walking to the hotel - my first thoughts of the hotel exterior were old, run-down and a concrete block however inside it was clean, neat, modern and well presented; a total contrast.
Without no doubt this hotel has now become our favourite hotel to stay in whilst we are in London and will be returning. Lets hope the breakfast stays at £10!

Overnight Stay

Booked the Royal Trafalgar for an overnight stay to attend a function close by, thus avoiding late night taxi delays to get back to hotel. Whitcomb Street is a narrow one way street behind the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery, so just a 50 yard walk and you're in Trafalgar Square. Got upgraded to a Junior Suite - big bed, modern room but still quite small and a shower but no bath. Breakfast not included in rate. Good central location.

Why weren't we warned about the refurbishment?

We arrived about 3.30. Polite, helpful staff on reception. Room fine - until the drilling started and then the banging. We had hoped for a relaxing few hours in the room before we went out - I had asked for a quiet room. I rang reception who were very pleasant and apologetic and just said that details about the refurbishment had been on their website. I booked on Laterooms.com - nothing there about drilling and hammers. I asked about when work was due to start on Sunday, I was told 12 at the earliest. Meanwhile all had gone quiet, and it stayed that way until about 11 the next morning and by then we were checking out. I understand the need to renovate but hotel managers, please, please ask reception to explain to customers before they take their rooms! It would save a lot of bad feeling.
