Tucked away but convenient and quiet

This was our first visit to London for many years. The Royal Horseguards is perhaps a little more than we would typically pay but it was worth it. Enjoyed our stay very much, location very quiet but very convenient being 10 mins walk away from Trafalgar Square, 2 mins walk away from Embankment Tube Station, 5 mins from Charing Cross station. Whitehall is a very attractive part of London. Given double room with great view - beautiful but small - small double bed which was not suitable for us. Requested room with bigger bed. This was given but not as attractive as first room. However, it was nice and the extra space suited us better. No bathrobes though, and bathroom tv did not work, very limited hanging space too. Breakfasts great. Public areas very lovely. Staff very professional, pleasant, helpful - nothing was a problem.

Good hotel but the Restaurant is too small for the people who want to use it. I suspect there was a lot of outsiders eating which meant the residents struggled to get a table. There was no information telling us that we had to book a table. At breakfast again too many people for the number of tables wanted. A list of people waiting was kept.

My stay at the Royal Horseguards for the London Marathon

I booked a standard 'inward facing' room initially, but when I saw it, I decided to up-grade as the window allowed no natural light in and had no view wharsoever. Staff were very good and showed me a choice of 2 other rooms - an executive and executive deluxe I think. Both were fine but I went for the deluxe, as I was running in the marathon and decided a treat was in order ! The room was spacious, had full facilities and the most amazing view across the embankment marathon route, the Thames and the Eye, through a stone arch. The service was impeccable throughout my 2 night stay, the staff making me very welcome as a lone traveller. The late (12pm) check out was great too. My only disappointment (which I mentioned on check out) was that the water was warm rather than hot on Sunday night, when I really wanted a proper hot shower or bath. Location-wise it was absolutely perfect for anyome running the marathon, as it was only 3 mins walk from Charing Cross where you are the first on the train direct to Blackheath (or the other start stations). I was in Blackheath in 22 mins. At the finish, the hotel was only 5 to 10 mins walk away, even with the crowds to contend with, so spot on. Covent Garden only 15 mins walk as well. I would stay here again, particularly for this event. I paid less per night than other freinds staying on Park Lane for example, who had a tube trip before they could get on the train at Charing Cross, and a similar journey back post race. All in all a very positive experience.

Weekend at Royal Horseguards

Perfect! The staff couldn't do enough for us, including preparing the room so we could have it two hours early, and leaving birthday cakes as a surprise for my partner. The accommodation was immaculate and the location brilliant. We had a room that overlooked the Thames and the London Eye. This hotel has spoilt me for any other hotel in London.

Superb

We had stayed at the hotel many years ago and was impressed back then and we were not disappointed this time around. Everything from initial impressions on entering the hotel, to the room we stayed in, and the staff service in all areas of the hotel was excellent.. A very enjoyable stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone and have done so.

Hotel is in a good location and the staff were both helpful and friendly. The entrance to the hotel is clean and inviting, with lots of sections where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine or read the paper.
The room on the other hand was small with a grim view of brick wall. The room also had a musty smell that attached to my clothes the next day. I did not ask to change rooms, mainly due to asking to change rooms on my last visit being met with some resistance. This is the fourth time I have stayed at this hotel and is probably the last time. Although it is a good hotel- the rooms I've been in have not been value for money. To be fair my sister has had a different experience of rooms at this hotel.

Royal Horseguards - a clean and elegant hotel lacking some service polish.

A special request was to have some view with the room. What we got was the back wall to the lifts 5 feet away and the sound of the kitchens. I understand budget may place you in a certain "position" but I'm sure there could have been a better option to accomodate the request. First impressions were "well why both with a request section if this is what happens".
Sadly the service was generally slow throughout. Afternoon tea took nearly 25 minutes before we even had a drink and then there was no milk.
Breakfast was a buffet service and very nice but anything waiter service orientated was once again slow and needed prompting - toast was requested 3 times and the milk for the tea was again a rare item not to be given out willingly. Queing behind and then watching the head waiter eating his breakfast too was a new one in that class of hotel.
A very clean and well finished hotel but sadly it was just a little too much hard work for just the basics, we were always looking for a member of staff to complete things.
Worth a stay, it could however be really fantastic with just a little more attention to detail.

Good hotel, shame about the staff

This is such a well-located hotel, and generally is a nice play to stay, however some of the staff have such a bad attitude. From the patronising receptionist at check-in to the equally unhelpful and uncaring person on the phone and the barman who ignored us for over 15 minutes to then serve others who arrived immediately - you need to train your staff! This was our second visit, the first was pretty much the same and we thought things might have improved - they haven't.

A really high-tech hotel in a classic setting

It's 3 years since I stayed at the Royal Horseguards, during which time it's been transformed. The room had superb facilities, even an ipod dock that plays music through the room's own audio system. The common areas have been refurbed, and though i didn't dine in the restaurant i was very happy with the casual service in the lobby and other areas.

Simply the best!!

Over the years we have had several weekend breaks in London staying at various hotels throughout the City, but I have to say and without a shadow of a doubt that The Royal Horseguards is 'simply the best'!! by a huge margin. From its perfect location - on the opposite bank of the Thames to the London Eye - to the wonderful staff and the spotless accommodation. This particular visit was for a surprise family birthday party which also coincided with my husband's birthday, which I mentioned to the front desk staff on arrival. Later that same day there was a knock on the door and my husband also had a surprise birthday cake delivered with the complements of the hotel!! We cannot wait for our next visit - superb!!

Perfect for a special weekend in the capital.

I requested a room with a view of the Thames and was not disappointed. Up on the 8th floor, the view was sensational. As I work away with the armed forces, this was a late valentines weekend treat for my girlfriend and I am eternally grateful for the room and the superb view. I simply do not have a bad thing to say about the standard or cleanliness of the hotel. Everything about it is first rate. The staff were completely professional and courteous. The only bombshell was when the bill was presented; i had hoped to keep the price of the room a mystery but I was routed when the staff member decided to pronouce it to the world instead of discretely passing me the invoice. *Sigh*. Sooo close!!

Accommodation re 21st Feb'12

The room was OK, but it had no view and was in the centre of the hotel overlooking the extraction units, so there was a bit of noise in the night.
The hotel doorman was excellent, very helpful and courteous, as were the conciege staff.
However, the breakfast was a disgrace and not fitting of the price paid (£45). Breakfast was advertised as available from 6.30 to 10 am, so we arrived down at 9.20 am. We were shown to a table tucked away in the third room and although offered tea/coffee no toast was offered. the breakfast was a buffet, the sausages/bacon were cold as were the fried eggs.everything else was luke warm.
For a 5 star hotel I would have expected the service to be better and breakfast cooked individually. To cap it all we were then asked at 10am to vacate the dining room as breakfast had finished. In all my worldwide experiences covering 40 years i have never been coerced to leave a restaurant. Clearly, the staff wanted to lay the tables out for lunch, but if you need to do that breakfast should be advertised as finishing at 9.30am leaving half a hour for guests to complete their breakfast.
Overall, the breakfast experience was a disgrace for a 5 star hotel and we expected better.

Stay at Royal Horseguards

We were made very welcome as soon as we entered the reception area. we had arrived early but our room was ready so were able to drop off our overnight bags and freshen up. The location was ideal and the tube station so close. We were able to walk to most places on our first day which was lovely as it was such a beautiful day. The room was adequate and clean. The food at breakfast was varied and fresh. Again service was very quick and efficient. Our checkout was easy and again we were greeted by very friendly staff. Thank you. We would come again and definately bring our children next time. PS the harp playing was beautiful in the evening too.

Lovely on first view - room major let down

The hotel was very nice and our room on first impression (standard Double) looked lovely - we arrived in the dark so curtains were drawn and we didn't look out of the window until the morning. What a revolting disappointment when we did! A brick wall two foot from the window so no natural light at all and the windows were absolutely covered in pigeon poo and there was a dead pigeon on the drain (also totally covered in piles and piles of poo). I'm not talking a few spots - you could hardly see out of either window it was filthy and clearly not been cleaned for a considerable time if ever. Put me right off.

I booked this hotel as a surprise for my husband's birthday and it did not disappoint. We were given a complimentary upgrade to a Deluxe Double. Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the London Eye. It was spotlessly clean and had everything you could wish for. The staff were amazing and could not do enough for you. The location is fabulous - within walking distance of the Her Majesty's Theatre where we had booked to see a show and just round the corner from the tube station. We will definately return again, hopefully, very soon.

Coldest room ever!

There was a problem with the heating, on the coldest weekend in London so far this year! Didnt get a good nights sleep at all. The next evening the hotel provided an electric heater, which although did warm the room up when on, it didnt warm the bathroom unless you carried it with you when you went to the loo!. And dryed the atmosphere so much that we needed a bucket of water to rehydrate ourselves in the morning. Furthermore the restaurant is very good, but food provided from the room service menu wasnt good at all. We order a Lamb curry, which arrived warm, Indian food is best served hot. The popadom appeared to have been left out for a while, it was stale and not crispy at all. You may think this is a lame excuse. But when you have been out all day in London, on the coldest day of the year so far, and wth no adequate heating, it was literally the final straw, Especially when they charge £5 to deliver to your room!!

A right royal stay

This hotel is ideally situated for the west end, the London eye and sight seeing. We made the most of it and loved the ambience and unstuffiness the hotel staff foster. We could not have been more comfortable and the breakfasts, although pricey, were worth every penny. Staff were freindly wiothout being patronising or pompous. The elderly doorman was so lovely.
Only two snags - we waited a very long time between courses at dinner and in fact waited nealry an hour to get the starter after ordering and 40 minutes before the manin course arrived. Worth the wait however as the food was exqusite but a little disapointed nonetheless. The other snag was our shower cubicle whilst being fabulously roomy and luxurious - flooded the floor during every use.
On the whole a fab stay and we will return.
