We had a great stay at this hotel, and would definitely recommend. The hotel was great value for money for central London, given its location at 5-star rating. London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Leicester Square, Picaldilly Circus and Regent/Oxford Street all walkable. Hotel itself was extremely clean and to a high standard. Staff were extremely helpful. A definite 5-star hotel without feeling too 'stuffy'.

We stayed for one night - what a treat. We upgraded to a river view for an additional 10 which was probably the best 10 I've ever spent. We had a room directly opposite the Eye and the view at 11.00 pm looking downriver was just spectacular. The room itself was very comfortable with all mod cons - even a flat screen TV in the shower room so I didn't miss three overs of the Test Match whilst showering. The hotel review rating was 95% and that's why I booked it and I have to say it fully justfied that

Having booked what we had understood to have been an executive room with a river view, upon arrival, we were given an internal room with a brick wall view. After returning to the front desk we were offerd the choice of 2 alternate rooms with a river view, both first class, but not executive rooms.<br />The quality and level of attention from the staff was as good as we have ever seen, the service was excelant as was the food. Would certainly use again, subject to conformation of bedroom type and location, as executive rooms do not have a river view.

The hotel was a very convenient location for us and the staff very helpful. The first room we were given was very disappointing, we had booked an executive room but it had no daylight so felt very bleak - the window looked into the lift shaft. My husband went back to reception and managed to get us moved to a smaller room but a much better outlook. That was our only problem, everything else was as expected for a hotel of this standard. I would stay here again if I could specify the exact room type on booking.

We stopped over here on our way back from Dubai and were very pleasantly surprised by the place. Tucked away just off Whitehall it's just far enough away not to hear the traffic. Check-in was painless, the staff were superb and friendly. the hotel was beautifully decorated and clean, and the rooms were immaculate and modern. The TV in the bathroom and the IPod docking station were really great touches as well as the automated do not disturb sign/clean my room buttons. Essentially this is a great place to stay if you are in London, it's very central (around the corner from Westminster and Trafalgar Square) It's even a very quiet and private place for the romantics!

Very helpful and friendly staff with a lovely atmosphere in the hotel. The rooms were spacious and very clean with all facilities catered for in the room. Breakfast was excellent and it was a bright sunny room that with good wether looked on a terrace that could be used. Woudl highly recommend this hotel and hope to saty again in the near future.

Although we were satisfied with the room in the hotel, we would seriously question the advertised room rate. We chose this one because it was supposed to be a 400 room and obviously with a 'late booking' we were looking for something 'extra special' at a very good price. We had a choice of several other hotels for the price we paid but decided on this one as we thought it was going to be even better. We had been told by friends of ours (who had stayed there earlier in the year) how wonderful the room was but when we checked in we were given a room on the top floor overlooking the roof tops of the surrounding buildings. We do appreciate that not everyone can stay in the best rooms with the views but did expect something a little better for the advertised 'original' rate.

We had a wonderful stay at the Royal Horseguards Hotel. I was a little worried that getting such a good bargain was going to mean a room overlooking the bins but we had a great room on the 7th floor. No river view but a view over the roofs of the nearby buildings - not too bad! The room itself was amazing and spotless. I wish i could hire their cleaner to come and clean my house - it was incredible how clean it was. Everything you can imagine is in the room - plasma tv, ipod docking station and a tv in the bathroom which is great (for those looking for the speakers to this it is all linked in to the surround sound for the main tv - instructions explain everything). And they have thought of everything to make your stay really enjoyable. The staff were friendly, taxi's ordered when requested, luggage looked after when needed. Cannot praise the hotel enough and I will certainly be booking up to stay there again next year.

In London for 1 night for the Theatre. Hotel is in a good location just off Whitehall overlooking the Thames and within walking distance of Trafalgar Square, West End and Theatreland. Our 6th floor room was very clean and had a TV in the bathroom, ipod dock, laptop connection to the main LCD screen, hairdryer, ironing board and iron as well as aircon, a safe and mini bar. Breakfast delivered to the room was excellent and late night drinks and nachos from the bar were good and almost reasonably priced (for Central London). We like staying at the Howard for our occasional slice of luxury but the Royal Horseguards is just as good and we will definitely return.

Customer service was tremendous and all the staff...
Customer service was tremendous and all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly in every respect. We found the hotel to be extremely clean and beautifully presented. We paid a small upgrade fee to move to a south facing room which had a fantastic view over the river Thames. There were a few minor problems with the technology within the room where the IPOD dock, sound system and TV system didn't work properly. We asked if someone could look at it and the hotel staff responded immediately but found there was a problem with the system that was beyond their knowledge to repair and would require the equipment installer to repair it. The system was only recently installed and we understand the problems that come with new systems like this. Unfortunately it was unable to be sorted out before we left but appreciate the efforts of the staff to rectify the problem. We rated the value for money as very good (especially for this location in London) but note that we had a special deal rate in January (middle of winter). Breakfast was included in our tariff and was most enjoyable. Once again the service staff were very helpful and friendly. Our only real complaint was the room service on Sunday was started in the morning but was still being completed at 6:20pm which we found a little inconvenient for our circumstances. The room supplies of plunger coffee, milk & biscuits was not replenished and the front desk staff were unable to find more. We were given a 50% discount of our upgrade fee for the problems with the service. After writing this it sounds like a few to many complaints but must emphasize we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this magnificent hotel, will stay here again if the opportunity arises and would highly recommend it.

I was served real Assam leaf tea at breakfast - top marks for this; other hotels please copy!<br />Minus Points: On our stay in December there was some music noise until quite late presumably coming from function rooms below despite our room being on the seventh floor! Our room, alledgedly an upgrade, had virtually no hanging space for clothes as the closet also housed the minibar and safe - not good enough for a 4/5 star hotel, especially if you intend staying more than a couple of nights!<br />Overall a very nice place to stay in central London.

Upon arriving there were three or four people behind the check in desk and it took a few minutes before anybody welcomed us and checked us in. This was my only complaint. We were given a comp;imentry upgrade and were really impressed with our room, although we looked over the road there was no noise at all. The hotel interior was also very quiet, no doors banging or hearing anything from neighbouring rooms.<br />Breakfast was fairly standard, nothing great but as it was included in the room rate of 140 for two I had no issue with the fact that it was a buffett, it was hot and tasted fine.<br />All in all I will seek this small chain of hotels out again and use them through laterooms.

The room was very nice. Staff were typically snooty as was to be expected in a West End hotel. We were woken up (as was the rest of the hotel) at 4.30 am by drunks playing loud music on our floor. We complained twice and after about half an hour, a member of staff was sent to remonstrate and the music stopped. If I had wanted the stag weekend experience, I would have booked Travelodge. Perhaps vet groups of travellers more closely?

The hotel says it is only a 4* but we havn't stayed in 5* hotels that were this good! Great service from concierge & rest of staff, huge room, huge bed as shown in pictures, immaculate bathroom with tv at the end of the bath! delicious buffet breakfast and & great location too, only a few minutes walk from Trafalgar Sq. We chose this hotel specifically because we were hosting a dinner at the adjacent National Liberal Club. Initially, the price quoted had been way too high, but by the day of the event it had gone down to 140 for a superior room, so we booked. On arrival, there was some delay to checking in because of the lateness of our booking, but we were given a complimentary upgrade to an absolutely gorgeous room. Very large, with absolutely every mod con and luxury you could wish for. The bathroom was fabulous - a proper, separate shower cubicle (so rare!) and even a flat screen tv built into the wall at the end of the bath. Amazing value for a very nice hotel in a superb location.

The hotel is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. We booked a standard double room. At check in we were offered a choice of upgrades: a refurbished room without a view; a refurbished room with a view across the Thames; a non refurbished room with a view over the Thames; at various different costs. The staff were happy to show us the different rooms before we decided. We went for the unrefurbished with a view as this had the best view. My point in this is that the hotel website only shows pictures of the refurbished rooms and it appears that you are automatically booked into an unrefurbished room then offered an upgrade at extra cost. To be honest the room was rather 'tired' especially compared to the refurbished rooms, but was still more than adequate, was comfortable and suited our purposes. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is ideally situated for sightseeing, just about everything is within walking distance.

The first room that was allocated to us was on the 8th floor and was badly in need of refurbishment. Window was far too high up and no daylight was i n this room due to curtains being drawn all the time and nobody could reach to undraw them. I complained to the Manager about the bed being too hard and he moved us to a room on the 2nd floor which had been refurbished. this was somewhat value for money. I thought the prices were far too high for the quality of the first room and wouldn't recommend but as we were moved to the 2nd floor this was acceptable. My husband and I have stayed in many hotels over the world and this was by far the least value for money. The only thing that I would stay here again for is its location. The food was very good although it wasn't in an abundance.

Great location, big room and a wonderful view of the river at night. Excellent reception desk and concierge staff at the hotel (exceedingly helpfully with a number of requests) whom were unfortunately let down by the staff in the breakfast area (I only had breakfast so cant comment about dinner service). I had to ask a number of times to have my tea refilled (why not just give me a small pot?), the toast came piled on a plate (no toast rack) so it was pretty soggy, the cooked breakfast was buffet style so everything was completely overcooked (including the eggs). When my girlfriend asked for poached eggs they took forever to arrive and when they did one of them was dangerously undercooked (white was very runny). For the quality of the hotel i felt the breakfast was very disappointing indeed (especially considering the price) so In short excellent stay and would definitely go back but I would save my money and get a far cheaper and far superior breakfast elsewhere.

The welcome at reception was very formal to the point of being stuffy, with no attempt at understanding the customer as a human being. Every guest, including ourselves, was asked immediately if they wanted to "upgrade" their room, in a manner as if we were being looked down on for having chosen that particular category of accommodation. For a double room, there was only one dressing gown. The springs sticking out of the mattress made it difficult to believe that this was such a highly rated hotel. The renovation work being done on the facade just next to our room was unbearably noisy, in spite of the double glazing. No mention of this work was made at any moment, either at the time of booking or during our stay. Having booked quite a while in advance and requested specifically a room with a river view, we were both surprised and disappointed not to have one, and no mention was made of this on our arrival, or at any moment following our initial booking. At least there was a box of chocolates as a welcome on arrival.

This is the second time I've stayed in this hotel and I like it because it is very convenient for Westminster and the places I was going to. It is undergoing a refurbishment and so part of the hotel is rather old fashioned and the rest has been upgraded. The rooms are a good size and generally well equipped. This time I ate in the resturant and the service was first class and the food extremely good, not cheap but definitely worth it and I would eat there again. I didn't have breakfast so can't comment on this but if it is the same quality as dinner then I'm sure it would be good. My only two complaints are firstly that there is a short flight of steps between reception and the lifts which is difficult with luggage and I wasn't offered any help; secondly when I made the booking a month before my trip I asked for a specific room (the one I had been in on my previous visit, if it was available but nobody seemed to have even noticed this and I had to ask if they had given me this, whcih they hadn't and obviously hadn't even noticed my request. This was annoying as I had booked long enough ahead that they could have reserved it if they had bothered to look at my request. I used to be a hotel receptionist in London hotels so do know how it works! Otherwise I was generally very happy with the hotel and the location.

They not only changed the room but upgraded us to a junior suite without extra charge. Both rooms were of good size and quality if a little dated. The staff were excellent.

A nice room with a comfortable bed and enough space. Some slight wear but still very nice. We asked for room with a view and got one - spectacular - we could see the Thames, the London eye, St Pauls. Down side was poorly fitting windows which may be chilly in winter (although we had no problems as it was a nice evening) and then there were the trains. If you can't cope with trains running from very early in the morning then forego the view or ask to be at the other end of the hotel to the rail bridge. Breakfast in the room was a bit of an indulgence and probably too expensive for the quality - although the coffee was lovely and strong.

First of all, the location is fabulous--across the street from Embankment Underground and a beautiful building on the Thames. We had a beautiful view of the river, the London Eye and St. Paul's, and they didn't charge me an upgrade for the river view. The rooms are large by European standards and the room was incredibly clean. I received a very good rate after doing a lot of searching on the internet. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

We were looking for a base close to Covent Garden for a pre-Christmas night out in London. The hotel is <5 mins walk from Charing Cross station (10 mins to the heart of Covent Garden) which was very handy. Room was fine for 140+vat - clean, king size bed, normal Thistle facilities. Didn't use the bar/restaurant/leisure facilities, although from what I saw, it all looked good. Nice grand foyer. Would recommend it if you want somewhere close to Charing Cross.

Check in staff were extremely friendly and efficient - I asked fora river view as it was a special occasion and they duly obliged. Room had spectacular views of the Thames - particularly lovely at night. <br />Room was very big with a Queen Size bed, very clean with lots of character. Had separate hallway and marble bathroom, again with excellent river views. Mini-bar, sky TV etc. Only criticism of the room would be that it was a little bit chilly at night as the large patio doors were very draughty, and the heating system did not appear to work.<br />Overall though, the staff and hotel were lovely and I would stay there again and recommend a stay to a friend.

we booked a non smoking room (due to health reasons) but were given a smoking room that "stank" of smoke, even the bedding, pillows etc smelt. Hotel did little to help. Very noisy area at night. Concierge couldn't organise a taxi. Having phoned to pre book one for 45 mins we were told it would take another hour (1hr 45 minsin total) Breakfast arrived 35-40 minutes later than ordered. All in all a very unpleasant experience. Hotel Management and Thistle customer services have done very little to compensate for the problems other than offer the same rate that is normally avialable through Lateroomsand upgrade us to a room with a river view. But as we won't be staying there again it is of no use to us. STAY AWAY!!!

A friend and I stayed in the hotel for one night only. Our room was a deluxe which was normally priced at 310 per night was 140 on laterooms. The hotel was very close to Charing Cross Station and we could easily access covent garden and the surrounding area. Only stayed for one night and didn't eat in the hotel but the room was lovely and had air conditioning, mini bar, tea & coffee making facilites & complimentary bottled mineral water, tv, hairdryer, lounge area, and desk. The lobby was impressive with several porters and a concierge. The staff were friendly and polite, i would definately stay here again. the only disappointment was the view which was of another building. On arrival you have the opportunity to upgrade for a small fee.

Our room was incredibly small - we asked for a twin room and although the beds were dressed individually, they were right next to each other. Location and entrance however were superb.

The Good: Superb location - within walking distance of railway stations and many central London attractions, yet very quiet.<br />The Bad: Being told there would be a 20 minute wait for breakfast, and that it was our fault for coming down at the same time as everyone else; it seemed to us that it was the hotel's fault for not having a dining room large enough to cope with the demand for breakfast. If you experience this, take the short walk to Villiers Street, as we did, where there are several breakfast options - all cheaper than the hotel.

A well positioned quality hotel that was ideally situated for all the tourist attractions. We did not eat in the restaurant as we felt the price of breakfast was far to high at 17.00 per person. The hotel seemed very busy and one of the rooms I had booked was not available because the receptionist said I had cancelled it which I had not, but this was soon solved and a room was located. Overall a very enjoyable stay with all staff being polite and helpful.

Didnt eat in restaurant save for breakfast. Breakfast was a very good buffet servce, but very pricey . The room was good, well appointed, but the view was non existent. A view of the river at an extra 40 seemed excessive.

Our only disappointment was that having requested a room with a River view we ended up with a view of another part of the hotel, and in the close proximity of a Christmas function on the fifth floor- where the music/base was so high the picture frames and bathroom fittings rattled. It would have been acceptable to expect it to finish a midnight - but this went on until 1am. We are definitely not party poopers but the hotel could and should have advised of this at check in.

The hotel is in a really good position for sights such as The London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Horseguards Parade, Whitehall and Covent Garden, and the tube stations are close by if you want to travel further afield. It has a grand but relaxed atmosphere and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. The breakfast is a bit pricey but is probably par for the course in London. We enjoyed our one night stay enormously.
