The room was tiny, the net curtain was grey, the furniture was tired or worn, the sink was stained. The staff were friendly and courteous. The bed was comfortable. The Bar and Sitting room was disappointing and the £5 per day wi-fi charge was difficult to take.

Room Size and Quality

I have never stayed in a room so small. It was approx 18" wider and 6" longer than a single bed.
You have to get changed in the tiny hall way.
The toilet seat was heavily marked and stained and the shower was cheap quality , cold at 7.30pm at night and pointed to the back wall with no adjustment.
I know London is expensive, but you expect better for £75 a night.

Hotel room needs updating

I stayed in a single room, on the fourth floor. I arrived on the fourth floor by a lift. The first thing I noted was the fire door hinge was broke and the fire door was open.
On entering the room there was a clean made bed. tea an coffee facilities, however only one sachet of coffee. The room was dirty the walls were dirty.
On opening the fridge it smelt and was dirty, there was spilt milk in the bottom. and although it was plugged in it did not work.
The skirting boards and shower edging were thick with dust.
The mirror had three large black marks on it where the mirror had warn away.
There was no plug for the sink , therefore I could not wash properly , I had to leave the tap on which is a waste of water.
The shower room needed to be cleaned, there was hair and skum left in the plug hole. The shower curtain was dirty. The shower worked however it was not a brilliant flow, many of the holes seemed blocked.
There was only a small towel to dry with.
On a positive note. The television worked.
Shower/hair wash and soap was provided, however I went and bought shampoo as one sachet was not enough.
The break fast was Ok, and the waitress was very polite. The room was warm. The bed was ok
There was a hairdryer.
The room needs to be cleaned properly and painted and updated.
For a three star hotel I was dissapointed. I have stayed at guest houses better than this.

Overall the quality of the hotel was average. The actual room was in need of urgent refurbishment in that it was dated, in need of repair and very 'tired'. Although the price for London was probably reasonable such accommodation would not have attracted a 3* rating outside of the capital.
One redeeming feature was that the breakfast was excellent.

Good location about the only thing good to say about this hotel

At £80 night, I was shocked to get a v poky, shabby room with filthy carpet at very top of hotel reached by narrow winding stairs after the lift runs out. Would feel vulnerable in a fire. Fire exit was into an adjoining building reached by going down a floor. TV not working. Asked for another room but none available.Polite but ineffectual night reception chap said if I brought my case downstairs the next morning, when I returned the next eve I would be given another room lower down. However, when I returned next evening staff had changed, no knowledge of this promise and only room available the one I had the first night. Reception staff polite and full of apologies but ineffectual. Would def avoid this hotel like the plague in future !

Not that great

The senior hotel employee saw me arriving with a big suitcase and hand luggage, but he did not leave his desk to help me with the doors although there were no other guests. I was under the impression that wifi would be free, but I had to pay 5 pounds per day to have access to it. My room was small and only equipped with the bare necessities. There were cracks in the paint, the sink and shower were not clean (someone else\'s hair was on the shower wall), and there were rusty stains. The whole place looked like it was in desperate need of some work.
Breakfast was very poor. I chose the continental breakfast which consisted some toast, muesli with milk and coffee or tea. I could not choose my own tea flavour, and milk was the only option to go with the cereals. I had booked a five day stay at The Hallam, but went out for breakfast since the first day.
The junior staff seemed to be more attentive and once willingly helped me when the TV wasn\'t working properly.
I guess London hotel rates are generally high which is why even hotels like this can charge high room rates, but I do not believe that I got good value for my money.

A little doesn't go a long way in London

To put the stay in context, I have to remember that whilst we considered that we paid a lot of money for two nights, compared to the other available hotels the Hallam was definitely at the budget end of the London market.
The room was small and the furnishings looked tired. The breakfast was very basic and options were limited (either continental or full english with no substitution possible).
The staff were friendly and welcoming.
You wouldn't want to (and probably couldn't) spend a long time in the rooms, but it was suitable as somewhere to crash after visiting any of the many attractions in London.
Good central location and close enough to the tube.
All in all i was a little disappointed. I've paid less money to stay in much, much nicer places but not in London. If you're looking for a budget venue in London then I would probably recommend the Hallam. If you are looking for luxury I would recommend you look elsewhere

The en-suite was desperately in need of a plumbers attention. It let the side down badly as the bed was comfortable, the room spacious, the breakfast was lovely and the staff friendly. The hotels location is great, just a half hour walk from piccadilly circus but there were no noisy crowds. 9/10 for all except the en-suite which was a 2/10.

Spot on for location

Located right behind BBC Broadcasting House at the top of Regent St, and literally a 30 second walk to the reception of BBC Radio2. It is for this reason I chose to try the hotel. For me it did the trick for a one night stay. The breakfast experience was excellent for a hotel of this type and enough to eat to start your day. Check in was quick and efficient.
One thing to note, the lift only goes to the 4th floor and there are 5 floors in this hotel. If you are in-firmed in any way ensure you are accommodated on one of the first 4 floors.
The rooms do have freeview TV and the Red Button works so you can keep up to date with news and sport at your leisure. Tea making facilities also in the rooms, but take your own toiletries as the ones provided are sparse. Towels are provided.
Don't expect a lot for the price you are paying. What you are fundamentally getting is an excellent central west end location at a very reasonable price.
Would I stay here again? Yes!

Dissappointing

I got a small single room, which was advertised as a cabin room. As I had a late meeting and an early start that was fine. It certainly was very small - even the door was a narrow door, a standard one would not have fitted - but that was what I expected. Then I found that the single curtain only covered half the window, so I was woken by the sun in the morning and then was scolded by a shower that I could not even hold my hand under for 1 second.
I complained about this at reception and was given a 25% discount, but then I would far rather have been refreshed and ready for work. So I headed down for breakfast but had to queue for 10 mins for a seat. When I final got my breakfast, there were no sausages, and I was told that they had run out, despite the fact that there were one of only four items on the breakfast menu.

This is not cheap and cheerful this is unhygienic.

Hallam Hotel

I have stayed in hotels all over the world and never stayed in such a run down poorly kept dirty hotel ever. There was no attempt to keep it clean or has even clean sheets on the bed. The room stank of drains which came from the toilet. They had tried to mask the smell with air freshener but without luck. All i ask for is a clean room and bed, no frills when you pay £60 PN, is that too much to ask for?
I didn't have a shower as the mold growing out of the shower was too much and the door to the bathroom didn't even open correctly. The furniture in the room was falling to bits, sheets on the bed had stains, the radiator had been splashed with something i don't even know what I could call it. The carpet was too old, everything was bodged, electrics didn't look too safe either. I didn't have the breakfast as if it was as same as the rooms I couldn't risk it. Avoid at all costs I would rather sleep rough, all I mention I have the photos to rove it too.

Four nights at the Hallam

I guess when you are paying very little for a Hotel you cannot expect much. The first room i was put into was the size of a cupboard and the the little table next to the but was tatty and the little nails sticking out of it tore my stockings. i could not even open my suitcase. I felt like Harry Potter living under the staircase. I also had no hot water so my first shower was cold. Cold showers in winter are not great. I was then moved into a much bigger room and it had hot water at least. the toothpaste or soap stains in the basin were still lingering and for some reason there were two very long rolled electric leads under the dresser table. The hotel staff do not help you with luggage. The hotel would do better with friendlier staff especially for people traveling alone. i definitely will not be going there again and will not be recommending it to anyone. I did only pay 276 Pounds for 4 nights though so it is to be expected. What i did like about this Hotel is that it is close to Oxford and Regent street.

Hotel has no pretensions; it is a cheap side-street bed and breakfast that is warm, comfortable and quiet. For less than 70 quid a night it would be churlish to be critical; my only real negative comment would be that the carpet really has to go- it has been there too long. Good breakfast, served quickly and without fuss. I will go back when on my own, but I know that my wife would not be keen so its back to the Grafton when she's with me!

Shabby but good value for money

I started out in a cabin room, which is so tiny I don't recommend it unless you just need a place to crash. I was going to grin and bear it, but since the hotel wasn't full, the receptionist decided to offer me a larger single room anyway, and I'm glad she did, as I ended up having to do some work there. The hotel is shabby, but I found the room clean and the bed very comfortable, and got a couple of good nights' sleep. The cooked English breakfast is good, the wi-fi relatively cheap and reliable, and considering the reasonable price and very central location, I have no complaints. If you want everything crisp and shiny and just decorated, this hotel isn't for you, but if you're not fussy it's a very good deal.

Excellent value for money

"This hotel is excellent and I will certainly be looking to stay there next time I visit London. The room had everything I required at a VERY reasonable price. The hotel was clean and the staff were really helpful and friendly. I was even able to get a vegetarian, cooked-breakfast (beans, tomato, mushrooms and egg on toast) with as much coffe, orange juice and toast and preserves as required (all included in room price), and served to the table (not that awful 'buffet style - help yourself' that you often find in cheap hotels.
The situation of this hotel is perfect for central London - just 5 minutues walk from Oxford Circus and therefore the tube to anywhere!
I cannot praise it highly enough - I didn't think such bargains were still available.

Excellent value for Oxford Street Area

Despite some adverse comments by other reviewers, don't overlook this hotel if yu need a bed for the night in central London - its just behind the BBC and only 5 minutes walk from Oxford Circus on a very quiet road so no traffic or other noise to worry about. Quick and efficient checkin - paid for B&B so just needed to leave key the next morning. The hotel is in need of re-decoration and is reasonably clean so, if you are someone who worries about this sort of thing then you have been warned.
I had a smallish double room with a comfortable bed and a small but good widescreen Sony Bravia TV with a very good selection of freeview channels and team and coffee makings. Slept well.
Breakfast was, as others have discribed it, excellent - cooked fresh to order. Aside from cereals and Orange / Apple juice with hot fresh crispy toast, I tested the chef by asking for 2 poached eggs - not a problem at all, they arrived in good time and could not have been better cooked. The bacon was just turning crispy at the edges - again perfect and, the sausage was 'proper' - not one of those awful pink things that the chains try and get away with but a wel cooked cumberland type - all in all a good start to the day.
In summary, for someone who wants a warm, quiet and comfortable albeit a bit 'tierd' hotel right in the centre of town, this is ideal. I will certainly be staying again - next week in fact!
