Good value for central london.

This hotel was not the height of luxury, but was what I expected for the price. The breakfast was very good, and things were clean. Very easy to get to if visiting for theatres etc. I would probably use it again.

You get what you pay for...

On arrival we were met with an indescribable unpleasant food smell! We signed in at reception (which also doubled up as living quarters) and had a fairly warm reception. We were early so left our suitcase at reception and headed out; upon return we assumed our case would have been taken to the room but it had been left in the reception/living quarters.
When we entered our room we were slightly dumbfounded - i guess it didn't help that only 3 weeks ago we had stayed at the Chester Grosvenor - and this was opposite end of the scale. The room was clean but very small and the bedding had seen better days. I guessed the room had been newly decorated so that was a bonus.
Pre concert we decided to go back to the room for a rest and was horrified by loud banging and shouting/arguing which seemed to last for ages - I was waiting for gunshot at one point.
The shared bathroom off the landing was extremely awkward to enter and took a bit of negotiating, while the bathroom was clean it surely needed grouting and some of the fittings could be replaced, it does not cost a lot to make a room look nice, just a little imagination.
I cannot rate the breakfast as we tried to spend as little time there as possible and breakfast would have prolonged the experience.
On a positive note, the location is good and you do get what you pay for. There are great travel links close by, some great pubs and restaurants.
I would not stay here again personally but it is cheap for London especially as breakfast is included.

Very good budget hotel

If you need a clean, quiet and comfortable room for the night with no frills then this is as good as any of the many such hotels in Kings Cross / Bloomsbury. Very friendly staff, clean room, digital TV, very modern bathroom, plenty of hot water, a simple continental style breakfast and all for less than the dreadful Travelodges nearby. These aren't rooms you'd want to spend much time in and aren't much use if you want to work (no desk) and the lack of a lift might be a problem for some, but the bed was comfy and clean and that's all I needed.

Small but comfy

Our room was on the top floor with no lift which would have been very difficult for anybody less mobile. The room was very small, but comfortable. We had everything we needed including an en-suite shower room which had the smallest sink I've ever seen! The lady on reception was very helpfull eventhough she had her hands full with two small children. Breakfast was excellent with superb service. The location for St Pancras station could not be better, you walk out across Euston Road and Argyl Street is infront of you.

Cheerful but not cheap

The good points - friendly staff, fresh and well prepared breakfast and a fan in the room during what was a hot weekend! Also, sooo close to Kings Cross Station and two good restaurants.
The bad points - If you have trouble with the stairs, tell them - our room was 5 flights up.
Being over 6 foot tall, or attic room didn't do my head any good as I walked around the room! Also, for those of you who do brush their teeth properly, your aim has to be pretty good - the sink is the smallest I've ever seen and the shelf above was no more than 40cm above the sink. I had to crouch and turn sideways to have any access to the tap for anything but my hands.
Also, what was with the towel rail being outside the bathroom nowhere near the door!
Overall, clean(ish) but not spacious. There is nothing the owners can do about this, so they need to lower the price!

Good budget stay

The owners were very friendly and helpful. The room was on the top floor so lucky I only had a small suitcase. The room itself was tidy and clean, quite small and a little on the warm side. The ensuite/wet room was clean and clean fresh towels were provided. Amazing what they had managed to fit into the little room. Breakfast was on the lower ground floor. Plenty of fruit provided and the toast and scrambled egg appeared quickly and was sufficient. I would be happy to return when I am next in London on business.

Best value for money accommodation experience in London (or anywhere else)

My husband and I have stayed at the Apollo Hotel in Argyll St, near Kings Cross in London twice now (Nov 2010 and Feb 2011) and the experience has been great on both occasions. It is a warm friendly comfortable little family run guest house where the staff could not be more helpful, kind and welcoming, the rooms are clean and well decorated, the beds very comfortable and the breakfast is superb and plentiful enough to keep you going till at least 8 pm! It is also very reasonably priced for the heart of London and so close to all the major railway stations and buses. It is ideal for a short break. It does have other IT facilities which we didn't use but are available. I just hope it doesn't get too popular so we are assured of a room next time we visit.

Perfect location 2 mins from Kings Cross station yet on a quiet stretch of road. The room was small but for the price it was fine, the shared bathroom situation was also not a problem - it was just across the way and didnt seem to have too many people needing to use it at the same time. Everything was clean in the hotel and the breakfast was nice - a full english or a continental.
We would stay here again if going back to London

I'd stay again - recommended.

The Apollo is a family run establishment in a converted house. Some of the conversion work is poor quality and gives an 'appearance' of uncleanliness, but i found my room, the bathroom and the dining room clean and tidy. The shared bathroom with a 'bath-tap' shower was a negative. As was the thin walls that allowed my neighbour's snoring to disturb my sleep. However, the breakfast was excellent and the proprieters are friendly, though a little reserved. To sum up, a pleasant stay in an establishment ranked amongst the cheapest i could find. I'd stay again and give a positive recommendation.

Overall good value but...

There did seem to be people coming and going at all hours in the hotel. Generally not a problem, but when the doors were creeking and then banging shut, along with the headrest being agianst the stairwell it did interupt my sleep.
The room was of adequate size, the onsuite was compact but useable.
The room could have done with a bit more thorough cleaning around skirting boards and tops of curtains.
Cooked breakfast was good, as was the service.

A great little hotel

This is one of the nicest hotels in this area. Our room was cosy (small), but had lots of little homely touches, like a table cloth on the small coffee table, plush curtains, an alarm clock and mirrors. It was a shared bathroom, but there was not too much competition and that, like the room, was very clean. Breakfast was good, fully English, plus a selection of croissants, fruit and yoghurts. For a budget hotel you can't really do better.

Tiny room but clean and worth the money

I was slightly unprepared for how small the room was! However, it was ok to sleep in. At this price it is a lot better for the bathroom to be outside the room, as was the case and that was fine. Breakfast great, a perfectly decent vaguely Irish pub across the way, and the train station five minutes walk away. No problem at all with this hotel for two chaps seeing some comedy and having a few beers.

Sonia.@Appolo.

My wife and I had a very comfortable stay with Sonia and staff, the location was superb, 200 metres from Kings Cross station, all forms of transport available, we found 7 day Oyster card great and used it to and from Heathrow and mostly on the double decker busses, a marvelous and economical way to see London. The Appollo would be a problem for older and frail people as there are 4 flights of stairs to top floor very narrow and steep.being fit we found it no bother. The breakfast( English or Continental ) was top value!.

Disappointing

When we got there we were told we were in a room on the top floor but then we were moved into a bigger room which seemed okay at first. There was a false windowsill and under that was a thick layer of dust. There was a plug socket that said 'do not touch' on it which didn't fill you with hope. The food was okay in the morning and we found them to be really helpful. I wouldn't go again as dust triggers my asthma.

Standard cheap London stuff

I've stayed in many of the cheap hiotels around Kings Cross when someone else wasn't paying. They're fairly poor and would be 15-20 quid a night anywhere else but this is London. This one is friendly, clean, looked like breakfast was better than average (didn't have time to eat it), room was small and fittings would have been cheap when bought 20 or 30 years ago but tele worked and water in the sink was hot. The loo was two storeys below so that might be a problem for some, but probably need to fork out another 20 quid somewhere to get the luxury of en-suite.

A gamble I am pleased we took!

£80 for a night in central London will always be a gamble, but this "Hotel" or B&B actually turned out to be really nice. We stayed for 3 nights and the staff were fantastic including the young girl who served us breakfast each morning which was cooked fresh. The only real down side to breakfast was the small dinning room and on a few occasions we ended up sharing a table with other guests. Not a problem to us but something you need to be aware of as some guests were visibly uncomfortable with this.
The rooms whilst small (we had the double room with en-suite) were clean and tended to each day to a very high standard. Once again the only down side was the attention to detail. We had one handle broke on the wardrobe, the attachment for the shower head was damaged which made positioning the shower a bit of a challenge and one window would not close properly unless you opened the other one and pushed it from the outside. Less than £100 spent on these small things would have made a good experience great.....
As I said at the start for £80 I was not expecting the Ritz, what we did get was a clean and pleasant room with friendly staff and a great breakfast, it was just a shame abut the little things.....
