Thanet represents very good value for the location. I booked a single room which was very small but had all the essentials. You need to be fit - there is no lift and my room was at the top of three flights of stairs. The staff were very good and the inclusive breakfast was excellent.

Good location and very friendly and amenable staff. Large room in basement No. 16 had no blinds on a rooflight so we woke early with the sunshine. Bathroom and toilet could do with a revamp. Overall better than the 70 a night hotels we've stayed in before and worth the extra cash.

I stayed in this hotel in early June 2009. It is very conviniently located between Russel and Bloomsbury Squares, right in the centre of London, but in a very quiet, clean area, and very close to the undeground. Very friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms and overall a very good value for money (I paid 70 for one night in a single room).

I've always wondered why the London hotels are as bad as they are unless you pay a lot. This hotel made no difference. Knowing that you can't get much quality with about 80 pounds a night I'm still amazed every time I go to these hotels "three star" hotels. The room was not much larger than the bed, floor was squeky, the shower didn't work properly, wlan didn't work, if it had been winter I'd have frozen my butt and so on. I could call that the "same as usual" quality of London hotels. I'm just continually amazed by the poor quality of London properties and infrastructure. They should definitely try to do something about it. Not just this hotel I mean.

Staff very friendly and helpful, but very disappointed there was seemingly no hot water either on the night of my arrival or on the following morning.
Apparently due to being on the top floor there was a 'nack' to getting hot water to flow through, but not having been told this in advance meant that i had a mostly cold shower.
Shame as it was otherwise a lovely little hotel

Poor customer service. I reached the hotel at night. There is no door bell, I saw the night manager from the window. I waved my hand to open the window and he asked me to leave! Said the hotel is closed and no one is allowed in. This despite having a booking at the hotel. Fortunately I was able to get their phone number and speak to him and then he opened the door and let me in. Then he made me stay on the top most floor climbing 78 stairs.

Stayed for one night on a cold night in February. Was cold in the middle of the night due to a large single glazed window at the front of the hotel. Should have left the radiator on, but the room was very warm when I returned to it. The room was a little jaded around the edges, however it was fine for my purpose. As other reviewers have stated, an excellent breakfast.

Great location, just a couple of steps from the British Museum and the Holborn tube station, the hotel is a little bit too expensive for what it offers: a decent bed in a good location. For my stay, the price was equivalent to the Travelodge around the corner, with 2 differences: included breakfast (though available for a very limited time, I think from 7:45 to 9:15) and internet wireless (which doesn't work anymore according to the receptionist).

This proved to be an excellent choice for our overnight stay after taking in a London show. The room was clean and warm and as it was at the rear of the hotel there was little or no road noise. If you are looking for luxury, bars etc this is not for you but if you are looking for good budget accomodation then this is the place. The breakfast in the morning set you up for the day with cereals, juices, toast and a full english. The hotel is in an ideal location just off the main road, within a 2 minute walk of the British Museum and about 10mins from theatreland. When we take in our next show we know where we will be staying.

The hotel is well placed for central London facilities yet on a quiet street with a number of beds overlooking private gardens. The welcome is friendly and efficient. Rooms are a reasonable size, clean, tidy and well presented. a good range of TV channels plus books available in a small basement lounge. The floors are a bit creaky so hope that guests above don't arrive too late. The breakfast is simple but tasty with a good choice of cereals and cooked options though only available from 7.45 if you want an early start. Strongly recommended at the price. Very good value for money.

The room was small but being a lone traveller I didn't mind that so much. I was right at the top of the building which is a lot of stairs, but keeps you very fit! Unfortunately the WIFI did not reach to my floor so I had to go to the floor below to get a signal! Not very good when you are staying to work in the evenings. Another problem was that my radiator didn't work very well and needed bleeding. Unfortunately no one had a key to do this! I was offered another room but told that the shower wasn't good in it! I decided to stay where I was and get an extra blanket.
The breakfast was very nice, it was in a great location and it wasn't too noisy.

Had a top floor room so little heating was required (December).
Shower lacking in power and hot water takes a while to work it's way up to that floor.
Hot breakfast cooked to order is a nice bonus when so many places in this price bracket will only offer continental.
Wouldn't take the wife or girlfriend there but I only needed a place to crash.

An ok B&B for the center of London. The breakfast was good, but I'm wouldn't stay here again. If you do choose to stay it is really essential that you get a room at the back of the hotel. The noise from the street was really bad; busy traffic and lots of people coming back late at night. The noise inside the hotel was nearly as bad as the old floor boards creak horrifically. Overall it was a really tired hotel, so if you are used to scrupulously clean and modern, this isn't going to be the one for you.

Some helpful advice on where to go for a meal and a pint in the evening, very organised and friendly.
I was offered use of the (free) wireless broadband to work, although it was struggling to reach the top floor where I stayed.
The room was larger than average, very clean, comfortable and homely. Windows were old and did not shut properly, so noisy though in the evening. Having said that, the street was quiet overnight.
I will definitely stay here again - it is a cut above all the other London hotels I have stayed in, mainly due to the good welcome and staff, but also on location and excellent value.

Breakfast was excellent, full English included. The only downside was that the previous guests towels were still hanging behind the door and when I told staff about it they were quite casual and said 'oh right, I'll pass that on'. I stayed at the Thanet Hotel for three nights. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. As mentioned in previous reviews, the building is old and the floorboards do indeed creek a fair bit but all in all, the hotel is more than adequate for a quick break. It is situated approximately five minutes walk from Tottenham Court road tube station and Oxford street and is in a nice area of London. My room was situated overlooking the rear of the hotel and was very quiet and adequately heated (in November). I would have no hesitation in staying there again in future.

We booked a double room but when we arrived were allocated a family room ( 1 double bed and 3 single beds !) so we had a lot more room than we were expecting. The room was very warm and very clean, if i was to have one minor gripe it would be that the extractor fans in both the toilet and shower (seperate rooms, which was very handy!) were broken, which meant it felt like there was a small window constantly open in both rooms, as long as the doors are kept shut you don't notice at all. If you do venture to the toilet in the middle of the night, in November, you don't hang around for too long! The staff were always very courteous, polite and helpful. The breakfast was cooked to order so was both fresh and hot .
The location was very central, so we walked everywhere, if you want to go by tube it is close to both Russell Square and Holburn. Overall i would say the Thanet felt like a nice family run bed and breakfast and the next time we visit London we would not hesitate to stay here again

I really enjoyed my brief stay here. The hotel in general, and my room in particular, were clean, well maintained and had real character - lively modern prints on the walls, rather than standard-issue historical pictures or bland landscapes. The room was pretty small, but absolutely fine for a single person, and in good condition. The breakfast was probably the best I've had in a London budget hotel. Staff were all friendly and cheerful. The location is excellent - so central, but on a relatively quiet road. There seemed to be several families with youngish children staying, who all seemed to be having a good time.

On first glance, the hotel seemed lovely. The area was fab and the building itself seemed great. I can only say great things also about the staff who are all extremely friendly and the breakfast was delicious.
However on arrival, we were sent "downstairs" rather than upstairs to where all the hotel rooms appeared to be. I was immediately unnerved as it was like being sent down to a very spooky basement. Our room was the only one "downstairs". We were told that our room's door slammed if you let it shut behind you. We found this not to be the case but heard continuous banging noises throughout the night which again, was not only unnerving but also pretty annoying. I am not a huge fan of basements in any event and things that go bump in the night (especially not in a 15th century building) so I was pretty freaked out. I am not an outspoken person so did not ask for a room change although now wishI had of done. I felt that because our room was pretty cheap for Central London and such a nice area, the worst room was given to us on this basis. We felt extremely isolated (which in fact some people may appreciate, not us however). I have said above that I would not stay at this hotel again, This is in fact only because I would never chance being given that room again (17). If however i was guaranteed an upstairs room with the other guests, I would most definitely stay here and recommend others to also.

A good clean hotel in London - a rare thing. The rate was a bit steep for a tiny attic room but those are London prices for you. The en-suite shower worked fine despite being at the top of the hotel but not enough room to swing a cat. The in room TV reception was as poor as poor can get but you don't really buy a hotel room to sit and watch telly. Would have been nice to see the news in the morning though. Free wireless didn't quite stretch to the attic room (it almost did) but the staff were more than happy for me to sit in the dining room to pick up my mails. Small (15 room) hotel, quite 'family atmosphere. 'Excellent breakfast choice (options for fresh fruit and good cereals range as well as 'cooked') with friendly service. Was pleasantly surprised especially given the moderate/lowish price. Rooms clean - and comfortable for the price. eg: good double bed okay for 6 foot pluser. The en suite of course is packed in a tight space but is fine; top rooms are on the 3rd floor & would be quite a climb for the non fit - so best checking in advance. Roughly 5 mins walk to Holborn tube ... but plenty of cabs seemed to be passing by. Didn't try broadband ... my PC showed 'weak signal' so I didn't investigate further. In my view, excellent value for money & recommended.

IGood value for money. Be clear that this a Guest House rather than a Hotel - i.e. no bar, and you may have to ring the doorbell on arrival to be let in (thereafter, you get a key). Friendly service, lovely old building - creaking floorboards might be a problem if you have a restless neighbour on the floor above! Potentially noisy if you're in a front room but the traffic subsides at night, and anyway if yiu want the "200 year old house just off Russell Square" experience, a bit of street noise and rattling sashes is part of ther deal.
.
-

This Hotel does not have the correct facilities for anyone in a wheelchair,so I would have liked more details about it before I arrived there, but with the help of my sister I managed the steps into the hotel and into the shower, just glad I was not in a chair. A nice, friendly hotel, in a good location. The only drawback (not the hotel's fault in any way) is that if you have room overlooking Bedford Place (at the front of the hotel) there can be some late night street noise from revellers in the early hours. So, if you are a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the rear. But apart from that a very nice hotel with good service and standards - I'll certainly bear it in mind on my next business trip to London!

Friendly reception, room small but adequate, bed clean and comfortable. Room was at the front of the hotel and was very noisy indeed, you could even hear people walking and talking in the street, let alone the traffic. My biggest complaint however was with the cleanliness (or lack of it). The tops of the door frames, the tops of the sash windows, etc looked as if they hadn#t been dusted for years, and the paintwork on the doors in the room and bathroom needed a good clean, as there were dirty fingermarks everywhere. With a bit of TLC and attention to this kind of detail, this would be a real haven and great value for money. The restaurant was very clean and nicely laid out and the breakfast was excellent.

On arrival we were wamly greeted and the owners were very obliging in their approach. I look forward to staying again at this pleasant oasis of calm in an otherwise busy city.

Lovely clean welcoming hotel. Excellent value for money. No lift so stairs to second floor could be a problem for some.

You cannot fault the location but the hotel...
You cannot fault the location but the hotel is really a guest house and for it to be classed as a 3 star hotel cannot be factually correct as there really are not any facilities. However if you dont need any and you just want somewhere to crash then its fine. Bathrrom is very small but was clean and funtional. Top floor is an attic extension so teh floor boards squeak and are uneven which woudl be very annoying if you were spending any considerable amount of time in the room.
The place is perfect if you just want to crash.
