Lovely room, terrible staff

Arriving late (10pm) to the hotel, we were received with staggering unfriendliness and incompetence from the staff at reception. Check-in finally complete, we got to our room to find the television not working. On ringing downstairs, a staff member was sent up, who pressed all the buttons on the remote before announcing that the television was out for the entire hotel. Perhaps we should have been told this on checking-in? Or perhaps the staff member might have known this before coming upstairs and wasting our time?
I assumed the staff problem was confined to night staff, but the daytime staff were just as unfriendly and inattentive. On our second night's stay I asked again if the television was working, to be told unapologetically and uncaringly that it was not. The reception staff also did not know where the nearest tube station was when we checked out - thankfully, we had an A-Z with us - and kept mistaking the deposit amount we were due to be returned. I would not stay in this hotel again simply because of the staff.
The room, though very small, was quite nice, and value for money. The area was not really ideal, being inconveniently located between tube stations for airport travel. The walking distance to the centre was fine, but the surrounding area was not great at night time. However, my main problem was with the staff - I don't expect reception staff in a four-star hotel to be incapable of giving directions or help, or to be so dismissive and uncaring to perfectly reasonable requests by guests.

'Call that a gym?'

One of the reasons why I chose this hotel was because it said it had a gym. In theory, yes it did, but it was one small, windowless room with just three pieces of equipment:- a squeaking treadmill that was as bad as one I gave away once on Freecycle; a cross-trainer that redefined the word 'basic' and an exercise bike where the display didn't work so you had no idea how far you had gone. And that was it. The equipment was, at best, home-gym equipment and designed for light use only - not appropriate for a commercial environment like a hotel.

Not great at all...

When I saw this room was discounted from £495.00 to just £90, I was expected excellent quality for a budget price. I was wrong. I can't imagine any in their right minds paying £495 for this.
We'd read it had a spa, it didn't, we'd read most rooms had a plasma screen tv above the bath - ours didn't and we'd booked a more expensive Club room. It only had a small shower. The TV did not work, they sent a bell boy to fix it, it worked for about an hour and then packed up. The air conditioning in our room didn't work either, we were freezing cold and to make things worse the duvet was not big enough for the bed.
When I go to a hotel, I want it to be a relaxing, luxurious experience, this was far from it.
We asked for an early morning alarm call, we had an important meeting to get to and didn't want to sleep in. It didn't happen. We said Good morning to the staff and got complete silence back from them, it was very rude. The breakfast was good - that was the only pleasant thing about the stay. So if you're looking at the huge discounted prices and thinking you're going to get something special - don't bother, there's nothing special about this place.

Fine and peacefull.

I got to the hotel in the early evening. Was upgraded to a deluxe double at check-in.
Room was very comfortable. Shower room a little small but also well clean and stocked and had modern fittings (grohe).
As it was freezing outside, having a cozy room was a must.
Location very close to all ammenities but far enough not to be directly on the doorstep.
Staff pleasant.
Never used the option to take breakfast.

Small room pricey breakfast

Note to self - read the reviews! Chose the hotel for it's good value (discount from £325 to £65. The room was worth £69 but nowhere near £100 never mind £350! Check in staff were rude / distracted. Room was in the (cold) basement and although a 'double' there was barely enough room for one person and I've got a wardrobe bigger than the 'bathroom'. Breakfast is not included and at £12 - £14 is expensive.

Weekend in London

This is one of the best London hotels we've stayed in. it's very close to both Paddington and Lancaster Gate tubes and is run by a friendly team of people who seem keen for guests to have a good stay.
The room was clean and well-stocked. We have stayed here before and knew not to stay on the ground floor (too noisy) - hence why we stayed on the 2nd floor.
The room had plenty of amenities - even a microwave (unusual!),

Good value in London

My room (club) was a decent size compared to other London hotels I've stayed in. While the hotel is actually on quite a busy road my room must have been a the back because it was really, really quiet and I got an excellent night of sleep. Excellent facilities in the room - modern, clean bathroom; big, flatscreen TV; hot drink making facilities; well stocked fridge. Also had a desk - important for me as i was working and often cheaper hotels don't provide a desk. Clean and modern deco.

This is the 5th or 6th time that I've stayed at the Shaftesbury Metropolis London Hyde Park. The reception was swift and efficient, I was upgraded to a higher spec room without asking and my stay was as good as always. The room was clean and very comfortable with all essentials to hand. The location is very convenient for Paddington Station and Edgware Road. I will certainly stay here again.

Close to bike rental station. Skipped the pricey breakfast and helped myself to very nice large apple from the bowl at reception. Will definitely stay here again.

Hotel was good but the staff were of a very low standard.
They are only interested in finishing there shift than to help you.
Booked 2 rooms, had to cancel one on the day - was charged full price for both rooms and told I wasn't allowed the second room key as it was there right to re-sell the room again but not to refund me if they did re-sell it. After 30mins they backed down and gave me the second key.

Quaint room but good deal

The room was very small, but had internet and the bed was very soft. If you get a good rate on the room it is a decent deal. I wouldn't pay more than 125 pounds for it, though. There are a lot of restaurants in easy walking distance and the hotel is near Paddington station which is nice.

The smallest hotel room in London?

And the ward goes to................ I arrived at the hotel to be told there was a problem with my room and that they would be moving me to another one in their chain (very near to Paddington). I was shown a sheet that informed that all rooms had Queen Sized beds and I was told I was being given a deluxe single room. The room had a single bed in it which you had to climb over to get to the tiny wardrobe. I realise that this is London and that the price was competitive but the room (sorry cupboard) was riducously small.

I was upgraded when I arrived from a single to a double but would hate to have thought what size the single room would have been! The room, although perfectly adequate, was entirely internal so no window(unless I wanted to look out into the hallway!) which was odd. Having seen some of the other postings about people being sent to other hotels, I made sure I checked in early!!

More like a cupboard

I know I should have spoken to the manager rather than moaning on laterooms but on the other hand the room I had isn't going to get any bigger by speaking to him/her! This must be the smallest room I have ever stayed in, you could wash your hands in the bathroom sink from your bed! Incredibly worn carpet in hallways (second floor) however, the room was cheap and clean but if you were planning on staying for long I would certainly re-think booking a 'deluxe double' unless I had the smallest room in the hotel and all the other ones are huge!

This has happened every time i have booked in here

I have booked to stay here on 2 previous occasions, this my third. Both times they have told me there was an issue with my room and had to be moved to another sister hotel. This took an hour to book in, the the hotel is about a mile away (they did drive me there) . This time I thought I would ring a head to let them know what time I would be there to avoid previous issues and knowing I was running a tight schedule. This time I was told they had doubled booked and I had two options. 1. Move to a different hotel or 2. take a smaller single room. Umm. There appears to be a pattern here. I took the smaller room. It was very hot and did not have an external window, just one opening onto the corridor which did not open. Not good, and not what I was expecting. In summary,if you get the room and hotel you booked into it is good value but you probably will not. I think 3 chances/experiences is enough to provide fair feedback - This is not a one off!

Room the size of a walk in wardrobe...

We arrived to find that we had been moved hotels 'due to a leak' (which they hadn't thought to warn us about). The trip had been planned as an 80th birthday break away with my wife, so it certainly wasn't what we had been hoping for! We then got sent to a hotel round the corner where we were assured that our room would be lovely. The room we were given was in the basement and passers by could see right into the room. The bed was just about queezed into the room which was about the size of a walk in wardrobe. We were just pleased we weren't staying any longer than the 1 night.

Overpriced, Over-rated Shoe Box

The smallest room Ive ever stayed in. Due to being in the basement it was very dark. We could not open the window or the curtains as this was in a stairwell which was used by staff to put rubbish out. It was next to the restaurant so when this was opened for breakfast the door squeaked constantly.
I would not use this hotel again as this was very overpriced with hotels in the same area offering better quality rooms at a more realistic price.

The rooms are small but very well kitted out...a kettle, internet, TV, phone, safe and all the bathroom soaps etc! - You will be annoyed/frustrated if you're looking for a room in which you could swing a cat...but if you're happy with small spaces this is definitely a great hotel! A bad choice

Nowhere in the room to put a suitcase let alone have room to move and whilst the bathroom was clean and very modern, the price charged simply is not justified for the lack of space or facilities even in London. A basic cheap hotel offers far better value and will not be staying in one of their hotels again.
