We stayed one night in May 2010. We booked a club room which was £20 more expensive that the regular room but worth it, it included full breakfast and also wine, soft drinks, water and fruit in the room. The room and bathroom were a little small but very nicely done and everything we needed was there. I would definitely stay here again.

Room very small, but all the required things were fitted neatly into it.No space (e.g. drawers) for clothes in wardrobe except those that hang.Everything worked - except that there was no iron(ing board) in the room as advertised.Shower was one of the most convenient I've seen, and a proper glass screen.Staff at reception and at breakfast most helpful and friendly. One gripe: the bed was not really made up properly (sheet straightened) by the staff.Breakfast was excellent: you could choose anything from the hot or cold bars. A whole pot of coffee each.Double glazing + air-conditioning meant a quiet, and not too hot, night.Walking distance from Paddington, a nice area - good location altogether.

Upon arriving, a heated discussion at front desk between clerk and a couple. 5 people were waiting in line. Half an hour later, xlose 11 pm, it was my time. No excuses offered, a sceptical look when I wanted to check-in (like: had I booked??) and most disturbingly, a phone conversation in the clerk's native tongue (not English) about me, using my name. I find that INCREDIBLY RUDE and would like to see that policy changed. In the room, the iron was broken, a bulb was gone and the keyboard was taped together to stop the batteries falling out. NOT what I expect from a 4 star hotel. My three points were promptly taken care of - that is, bulb and keyboard fixed - the iron incl ironing board simply REMOVED so I couldn't iron my shirts for the conference. All in all - I won't be coming back.

After an initial hiccup where the trainee or at least novice receptionist couldn't place our booking, we found everything else very much to our satisfaction. Our room though small, was very well appointed being 'club' class, clean, neat, tastefully decorated and well-appointed, overlooking a quiet mews. All the staff we encountered were helpful and charming and the buffet breakfast (English and continental) was jolly nice. A pleasant experience all around.

This hotel is a branch of Shaftesbury Hotels and it does not disappoint. The customer service from check-in to check-out was superb. We were given a free upgrade to a club room which included all the service expected of a 4* hotel. The hotel also provides a breakfast function in its restaurant which is either £11.95 pre-booked or £13.95 to have breakfast on the day.

We arrived at the hotel and were immediately told that as there was a maintenance problem we would be transferred to another hotel. It did appear that there were other people staying there. My wife asked if we were being sent to a hotel within the same group . I think there was a notice saying "Shaftsbury Group of Hotels ", and were told by the young lady at the desk ,whom I believed had a notice pinned to her uniform saying that she was a trainee, that it was the same group. I asked if it were of the same quality, and she said it was.... she said "4 star". We were not very happy to be sent away as we had actually booked to stay there. However, we went. When we arrived at the Ken. Rooms Hotel, and went to our room we were not at all happy. It was very small, and in general I did not feel the Hotel was of the same quality as the first one, and the receptionist said tha it was a different group of hotels. The rest is of course history. We should have been allowed to stay at the Hotel we had paid and booked for. We would expect a full refund to be made.

This hotel had taken bookings they couldn't fulfil. I and several other customers were sent to other poor quality hotels several miles away. No apology was offered and although they offered a taxi to take us it had to be their taxi, so this meant a lot of waiting around and resulted in me being 1 hour late for my evening meeting. In the morning the taxi never arrived to take me back to the station so I missed my train and was late again. I would never use this hotel again.

The welcome at the hotel was warm and I was helped with my luggage up the two flights of stairs for which I was grateful. The room, though well equipped , was really small and the bathroom door touched my bed and I felt it was too tiny and claustrophobic especially the bathroom. I thought that the room had everything for a good nights sleep and comfort it was just so small I couldnt wait to get out. The breakfast was adequate - it was self service and the eggs had been stood a while anyway I made do with cereal and toast! II I was given wrong directions to the tube by the trainee receptionist which meant I walked the full length of Bayswater Road and was late for an appointment. I paid £129 which I thought was good value for money in London and perhaps was just unfortuante to be given the box room, Luckily I didnt have a cat to swing. I liked the flowers and fruit a nice touch

I found it almost impossible to sleep due to the noise. However I have stayed at this hotel before and was given a room to the rear, this was excellent. All in all a good place to stay for the money but stay away from the rooms at the front.

FT, TeleG & The Mail newspapers in reception area & coffee & biscuits + x2 laptops on tap there, too. The bowl of apples on the front desk were a nice touch to the luxury feel of this little gem of a hotel. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel, as I had 3 teenagers with me & they preferred MacDonald's in Oxford St, which was about a quarter of a mile away & the poshest/cleanest Maccie D's I've ever been in!Hotel staff were helpful & polite & looked after our bags after we checked out, leaving us free for the morning to explore London without heavy luggage. A colleague and I chose this hotel due to its proximity to a conference we were attending. Arriving at the hotel after the first day we were informed that ‘there had been a problem’ and they no longer had rooms for us. We could cancel if we wanted or be transferred to one of their other hotels in Kensington. Of course we had no choice but to move, there was no explanation as to the room issue – subsequent guests checked in with no problem and weren’t moved, there was no attempt to contact us during the day to explain the situation and the check-in staff were surly and unhelpful. The hotel they moved us too was more like a youth hostel and it cost £20 in taxi’s to get back to the event in the evening (it was walking distance previously). I won’t be using this hotel chain again.

I've stayed in many rooms and they're always excellent, always clean, with the comfiest beds. There's even a microwave tucked away in a cupboard which could be handy for snacks. Internet access is brilliant, via the TV and a wireless keyboard. Bathrooms are small but beautifully modern, with underfloor heating. Only once had breakfast, which was okay, but usually I don't have it. It's a great location, minutes from either Edgware Rd tube or Paddington. Staff always helpful.

It was as good as a travel lodge but a lot smaller. JUST fitted a double bed in the room with a squash around the side to get into the bed. Fire alarm went off at 4.30am in the morning...apparently someone smoking in a shower but it affected the whole hotel....so one night of lost sleep and not compensated for it...a pity...it would have been a nice gesture to the rest of the guests.

Upon arriving at the hotel myself and my partner were informed that the hotel was closed due to maintenance work. I booked the hotel over 2 weeks prior to our stay so I was quite annoyed that I was not informed of the closure prior to arriving. The member of staff on reception called us a cab and we were moved to a sister hotel free of charge. The sister hotel was a little bit further out of the way than we would have liked - although the location was a dissapointment the hotel itself was clean and comfortable. Also of dissapointment was being knocked up at 10am by the cleaning staff - not content with knocking once the cleaner knocked 4 times until I answered the door - our laterooms confirmation detailed a 12 noon check out for the Shaftesbury Metropolis so I'm presuming the sister hotel doesn't operate to the same schedule. Unfortunately I am unable to leave a review for the Shaftesbury Metropolis as I didn't get any further than the hotel reception - myself and my partners dissapointment could have been avoided had we been given the opportunity of finding an alternative hotel ahead of travelling.

Hotel offered on the booking site a delux room reduced from over £300 to £89 for the night I stayed. I would not consider the room to be delux and would not have liked to pay any more than what I did! Have really bad marks where I knocked into things, bathroom door bangs end of bed when opeining and one has to be careful not to catch the door handle from sticking into oneself. I am only a size 12 and doubt it very much that a bigger person would be able to get into the shower, between the sink vanity stand and the shower cubicle! The room was very dark, had scaffolding outside which made it darker. No mirror in room had lighting over it, ones in the bathroom you could not get near to for either the large sink and unit or the toilet infront of other mirrors in bathroom. From 4:45am constant noise outside in corridor everytime someone opened the door to reception area. All in all I was most unhappy about the entire experience and feel the wording regarding 'delux' room should be removed, certainly from the room I stayed in. Breakfast was not included.

Next day I realised it was more cell like than a bedroom, around 15 feet long and about 8 feet wide. The window was curtained and the bed was pushed against it, but on getting on the bed and opening the curtain if looked out on a very small basement yard, the were other windows with similar curtains to mine. There was no where to put my suite case except in front of the ward robe. To open the wardrobe one had to move the suite case into the door way, move the plasma television screen to open the door, once open one pulled out the rail with coat hangers but very difficult to work once one item was on, due mainly to lack of access to the wardrobe There was a small table with the tea/ coffee making facilities and a bedside table. On arrival I was taken to the room by the lift, I prefer to walk and found the narrow stairs down to the basement very narrow and diffcult. The bathroom, was very adequate. I felt very overcharged for such a small cell, had I have been more alert on arrival I would have refused such a small space. Earlier reviews forewarned me of supposed and repeated problems with air-conditioning in the rooms, resulting in me being moved to their "sister hotel" The Kensington Rooms. This was not as near to Hyde Park as I was told at the Shaftesbury, but considerably further away, nearer to Gloucester Road. The room there was hardly bigger than a closet and there was no wifi in the room as advertised in the Shaftesbury, despite the same price being charged. I complained and was upgraded to a bigger (better) room where the blinds could not be closed due to the secondary glazing opening outwards into a heavy table that had the tv on it. Nor could the curtains be closed as the curtain pole was out of my reach (I'm 5´10"). I'd chosen the Shaftesbury as it was close to where my meeting was held and due to the in-room wi-fi and although they mitigated the inconvenience by paying for a taxi to and from the Kensington Rooms, I lost valuable time by being stuck in traffic rather than working. That said, the staff in both hotels were polite and professional; the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was neat (although the shower-head was clogged with limescale, making for interesting water jets, directionally speaking). The excuse of the air-conditioning not working is weak; the hotel took my booking 2 days in advance and to my mind should not be taking bookings if their hotel is uninhabitable.

For £89 in central London I wasn't expecting too much and the hotel itself was quite upmarket. Room was a little small with no external windows (in basement of hotel) which made it (even in March) a little stuffy and airless. TV was a nice digital job, but picture was a little iffy and no reception at all on CH4 or 5. A nice bonus was free broadband (although rather slow) which you usually have to pay for. Breakfast £12 extra was acceptable - help yourself buffet. Overall, a satisfactory stay, although one night was probably enough in that little room!

After arriving at Paddington Station from Bristol at around 3:30pm on a Wednesday afternoon, it was nice to only have a 5 minute walk to Sussex Gardens & The Shaftesbury Metropolis London Hotel. The hotel is on a fairly busy main road, albeit set back behind a service road. On arrival the door was opened for me by the Bellman/Porter and I entered the very modern and glossy reception/lobby area. There was no queue at the Reception Desk & I was greeted by a very polite gentleman, who seemed very well dressed. After being welcomed, my reservation was found in moments and I got allocated Room 317. This is on the 3rd Floor (top floor) and faces out to the front of the hotel overlooking Sussex Gardens. The lift arrived immediately and I found the signage within the hotel very impressive and easy to find my way. The doors are operated by an 'electronic key card' system and my card worked straight away. I had booked a Standard Double Room and on 1st glance was very pleased to have been upgraded to a 'Double Club Room' which offers heated bathroom floor, 32" Digital TV, Mood Lighting, Electronic Safe, Microwave, Fridge, Iron/Ironing Board, Air Conditioning (that worked perfectly - I like a cold room!) amongst other items. However, I was a little disappointed to find out the bed situation was 2 x single beds pushed together to form a double. However, this would have been fine had it not been for the 2 x single duvets provided rather than a double duvet. I did not complain as I sleep in a single bed at home and for £59 a night, 5 minutes from Paddington - I was amazed at the quality and the space within the room. Over my two nights everything worked perfectly bar the TV, which broke down on the 2nd night! I did tell reception but they could not get it to work either. Not a problem again, as I do not go to hotels to watch TV and I was out of the room for nearly all of my stay anyway. The power shower and bathroom are small but very well thought out and decorated, as is the layout in the bedroom. The surfaces were a little dusty on arrival but other than that a very good two nights for £59 a night. Polite staff, generous room and great location on the 3rd floor. Traffic noise, relocation to another hotel, rude staff, air conditioning being used as an excuse for relocation - I found none of these to be true of the Shaftesbury Metropolis London and I would happily stay again at this price (even with the bed/TV situations).

I chose this hotel only because it was very close to Paddington station. I was coming from Heathrow and had very little time to check in before a business meeting. When I arrived they told me an improbable story about a broken boiler (previous reviews refer to that same excuse) and took me to another hotel of their chain making me waste almost an hour. I was late for the meeting and furious for the rest of the day. At the other Shaftesbury they put me in a microscopic basement room absolutely ridiculous for the four stars the hotel claims and the original price advertised in laterooms (three hundred and something pounds!). Even for the discounted price it was rather disapointing. Shower and toilet were new and clean, so I guess it would be a practical option for a short stay if it were cheaper and did not use the "boiler" excuse to hide overbooking and drive customers around with a clueless minicab driver...

We were staying over the road in the Paddington Suites which were actually pretty nice. Small as you expect in London, but clean and recently refurbished. The fire alarm then went off and several guests made their way out to the street, however as after 15 minutes no staff members had shown up we assumed the place wasn't burning down and went back in. On returning later in the evening, we found that our key card was no longer working. We went back over the road to reception and met "rude staff # 2", who had managed to add "aggressive" to the list of customer service skills, informing us that it was our fault, as we hadn't checked in! Even men would object to being moved after a long tiring day to an unknown destination. All i wanted was to go to bed and sleep. When I arrived the 3 men behind the desk wanted a £20 deposit although I had already paid in advance. I refused. They said £10 . I refused. They stopped asking me. I complained about being moved and they offered me a free breakfast which I accepted. In the room the sheets were clean . The bathroom and towels were clean. The room was damp smelling. The curtains did not run as they were off the hooks. The bedside light flickered. I could hear the next room's TV through my walls.I reported this to the desk the next morning when they asked me to pay for the complimentary breakfast. Is this a regular scam that you book into a superior hotel with a known address then get moved to an inferior place late at night? It was definitely not 4 star luxury. I would never go there again.

We arrived at the hotel to be informed that the heating was broken and electric heaters had been provided although if we wanted we could move to alternate accommodation. We opted to view the room and judge the temperature as it was January and temperatures were below freezing. We were on a tight schedule so after viewing the room and deciding the electric heater would be adequate we paid our money and ventured into London. All was fine although the bathroom was the strangest design ever with the toilet pratically touching the wall in front and the toilet roll being positioned at the opposite end of the bathroom and several centimetres from the floor! The following morning we awoke to no power, hence no electric heating. We waited for over an hour after being reassured by the receptionist that it would be quickly fixed then after having a shower in the dark and finally getting ready in the cold, dim room we checked out a further hour later still in the darkness. When I discussed with the receptionist that maybe some sort of compensation would be appreciated I was told that I would receive an e mail later that day. I am still waiting a week later! I myself work in the Hospitality Industry and find it unbelievable that a hotel who's minimum requirements are surely to provide a clean, warm, lit environment can manage to fail in two of these three areas but not have the decency to at least offer an apology truly disguisting. Book this hotel at your peril maybe you will not even be offered a bed and charged for the priveledge!

It transpired that the allocated Room 802 is in the basement adjacent to open external doors and what appeared to be the smoking area and had to be accessed via a corridor through clouds of dust etc from on-going drilling etc, about which we were not forewarned. They eventually accommodated us in a "sister hotel" - thus delaying us significantly and so disrupting our plans for the day. (As they had my contact details they could have contacted me prior to arrival.)

Hotel is centrally located near Paddington Station and the Marble Arch in Central London. Great for short stays for couples looking to spend more time out of the hotel and in central london. We were upgraded to the Club Room which was relatively small but cozy. The hotel staff are friendly as well. Just beware of overbooking, we did come across a few guests who had to be transferred to a sister hotel nearby, apparently due to some maintenance problems.

I paid £55 (no breakfast) for a double room (single occupancy) which was exceptional value. I had been put in a basement room which had no window but was very nicely decorated and certainly didn't seem to suffer from footsteps overhead as another reviewer on here said. however there was no phone reception, so I asked to be moved to another room. So I was quickly transfered to a room on the first floor, where the phone reception was little better, but I didn't want to hassle again so I put up with it. The room again was wood-panelled and very smart. The television has full internet access (with portable keyboard by the bed) which was so useful. the bed was amazingly comfortable and the bathrooms as small but very nicely decorated. I didn't have breakfast. There was a microwave in the bedroom (in cupboard) though I didn't make use of it.In every way this is a fantastic deal - and in London would have been a fantastic deal at double that price. Being so close to Paddington (4 minute walk) and in a quiet road. This was my second visit and I will certainly stay again.

Lovely clean and (for a cheap central London 4*) relatively spacious. Very handy location but unfortunately Sussex Gardens is busy all night and the doube-glazing was insufficient to keep the noise out - and I say this as a former long-term city dweller and still a relatively heavy sleeper. If you could be sure not to be at the front, this would represent fantastic value.

We were told on arrival there was no hot water so would be moved to a sister hotel near by. This wasn’t much of an inconvenience, the staff were very helpful and apologetic and paid for a taxi to take us. Our new hotel was in a good location close to Paddington station and our room was small but generally clean and satisfactory for our needs. The only negative was the putrid stink emanating from the drains whenever the sink was used. This would have been a major issue were we staying for more than one night, but as it was we decided to just not use the sink much. Overall, decent value for money.

I needed a room as I had a wedding to go to and was unlikely to make my last train home. I only needed somewhere to crash for the night so didn't want to pay much. Most of the hotels/guest houses in central London around this price (55gbp I paid) looked terrible and had awful reviews, but this looked like a proper hotel and had good reviews so I booked it thinking it would be the best of a bad lot. The hotel was very clean, modern and of the quality I would expect paying double or three time the amount. I was very pleasantly surprised. Only slight warning was the room was quite small, but it was certainly enough for me. Would highly recommend for inexpensive stay in great location.

Although the hotel staff were helpful/ friendly, the room itself left a bit to be desired. So much for being the "deluxe" double advertised, it was really very small. There was hardly enough space to even stand on either side of the bed, the wardrobe was tiny, and the ensuite wasn't much bigger than a glorified airing closet! There was no bathtub, only a small shower; the room directly above us also had rather creaky floorboards, which woke us up several times during the night. The biggest inconvenience was that the heater was somewhat tempermental, turning itself off at will and taking a very long time to warm the room up.That said, for a one night stay, it was adequate - clean, good location, and the best thing going for it was the size of the television. At the LateRooms price, it was quite good value for money, but I certainly wouldn't have stayed here if not for the discounted offer.

Very comfortable bed, and nicely decorated room. Good TV and a small but very good shower. What more do you need for as night in London after a Christmas party! When I asked to be moved, I was told the hotel was full and this was the only room they had available - that was their problem, not mine. I heard other guests complaining about the size of their "deluxe" room too & they were told they would have to upgrade at an additional cost if they wanted a larger room. I chose the hotel as it was reasonably priced and a good location for me to be able to get to the hospital via the underground. On arrival at 22:20 I attempted to check in and was told to "hold on", the receiptionist then held a conversation in some form of Indian with someone on his mobile phone for about 15 minutes, and I was then told there is no room available for me due to "a water leak" hmmmm. If you are slightly bigger than average, height or weight then if you are given one of the shoe box rooms you may struggle. I am average sized and had to squeeze round the bed to get to the other side and when showering, I gave myself mild concussion when trying to reach down for my shower gel and shampoo as the cubicle was too small to erect a shelf even a small one. I have in my extensive travelling around the hotels in London realised that boutique = very small. Also don't be fooled by the late check out time the hotel offers on a weekend (12:00) as you will be duly woken by housekeeping around 8:30 - 9:00. Obviously the simple task of checking with reception who has checked out has completely slipped their minds. On a positive note, the recption is beautifully decorated, reception are extremely helpful and the rooms cleaned and decorated to a high standard (even though there was no ironing board). However because I do like to on a day away from my hectic life like a lie-in and I do like to be able to shower without risk of injury i will be reluctant to book here again. On reading other reviews you are best to either pay extra for a club room or beg and plead when you check in for an upgrade.
