On arriving at the hotel at 11.30 pm I was informed that there were maintenance problems and that I would be taken to apartments elsewhere. A taxi eventually took me to some apartments in Kensington, where there were difficulties in finding a key to my room. By this time it was 12.30 am. The taxi the hotel had booked for me in the morning did not arrive and I had to get a black cab to take me back to Paddington station at my own expense. The only reason I stayed at this hotel was to be near the station for an early morning train. As a single woman, this was a horrible experience and the staff had no customer service or understanding. This was the worst experience I've come across in hotels.

I found it quite strange that a 4* hotel had no duvet - just a hairy woolen blanket with a sheet underneath it which doesn't seem particularly hygienic! Otherwise, everything was fine, room and bathroom quite small (but what do you expect in London for 60?!), it had a BATH!!, staff were perfectly polite (except for somebody coming into our room unannounced at 8.30 am), and best of all, had the window open all night and couldn't hear a single noise - not from within the hotel or traffic. Miracle!

This is the second time we've satyed here and we would definitely stay here again. Staff were all very friendly and helpful (except for one rather disorganised receptionist who seemed unable to remember even the simplest request without at least three reminders). We had booked a family room but ended up with one twin and one double which wasn't a huge problem but if we had wanted two rooms we'd have reserved them! Saying that, the rooms were nicely furbished and very clean, the beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were very modern (if not he tiniest I've ever been in!) Overall good value for money in a convenient location (5 mins walk from Paddington Station in one direction and Hyde Park in the other) and there are a few shops and restaurants nearby.

we booked into this hotel to meet family who we had not seen for many years, on arrival we were told that due to maintenance work we would be staying in a different hotel, we explained that our family were staying here and that was the reason for our booking that specific hotel. During the next few days we saw many people checking in and booking out when we queried this no explanation was given as to why we could not have stayed there. Although our accommodation was a short distance away what should have been a memorable reunion was spoilt by what appeared to be an unnecessary separation.

I complained at the first room I was given. The second one I accepted as it was a double, though it was not much larger. No room for bed-side tables - watch/glass of water had to go on floor. The bathroom was a joke - room for only 2 paces. The shower was the only fitment that could be used in any comfort. There was no room for the toilet roll holder, it was out of reach under the sink. The "restaurant" was a room in the basement serving "snacks only" and a 15 breakfast. The "bar" was "bottles at reception". The only good points were the cleanliness which could not be faulted, and the late-check out of 12 noon, which was extended to 1pm at my request.

This worked out particulary well for us as we had theatre tickets. The reception staff were very helpful and organised a complementary taxi for us. We booked two rooms. Mine was a twin and was fantastic! The room and bathroom were spacious and luxuriously decorated. However, my friend had a double room which was small and pokey. At the discount price, we got very good value for money however, I would've been disappointed if I'd paid full price. Despite being in the midst of the West End, you couldn't hear any traffic or noise from passers by which I was very impressed with. We also received a complementary breakfast for our inconvenience which I thought was a nice touch and the breakfast was of a high standard.

Arrived at the hotel and were informed we would have to stay at the other Shaftesbury hotel across the road as they had problems with our rooms, then on arriving at the other hotel we get told the twin rooms we'd booked were in fact doubles (not good for 4 lads sharing!) so they then offer us 4 single rooms but these are back at the other hotel again...
When finally checked in we got offered complimentary breakfast and free parking for the inconvenience (but the parking would have to be back at the other hotel again...).
Rooms were clean but very small, the air con was very noisy but if it wasn't on the room became unbearably hot as they were very small and in the basement. The noise from the doors in the corridor was never ending and very loud which meant you couldn't have any peace and quiet or a lie in.
Finally the breakfast was atrocious, it's a good job we got it for free because if we'd of paid then I'd have been demanding my money back. It was 15 per person for cereal, bread, and the most disgusting boiled bacon and what looked and tasted like microwaved eggs. When the tiny amount they put out was eaten it took an eternity for them to restock anything and even when they did it was in very slow dribs and drabs, probably to try and put you off waiting around to for any more.

I booked this knowing I would get a budget experience and I'm not sure this hotel can be described as a true 4*. It was an extremely hot day and night and I ensured that the room would have air-con: which it did, but it was set for a minimum of 19 degrees, which was far too hot for me and failed to cool the room down. The hotel staff were unable to adjust this. apart from this, the room was extremely small and only just got the double bed in, the chair for the desk could not fit in from of the desk! Only a shower was available in the 'bathroom'. I'd rather spend another 20 and go to a proper 4* hotel next time.

When we got there we were told our room was on the 7th floor, and the lift only went to 6 - so we had to drag the suitcase through a tiny fire door, up a narrow stair case and through another fire door to our room. Anyone over 6ft would need to duck through nearly every door way.
When we tried to have a shower - there was no hot water. After telling reception, they told us to "run it for 10 minutes as it takes a long time to get to the 7th floor". We tried this again the next morning, but again no hot water! This is something that we should have been advised of at check-in.
We made a complaint at checkout and still no apology or offer of compensation from management, which is why we will never stay here again.

Stayed here earlier in the month and got...
Stayed here earlier in the month and got a double room which was very well equipped and comfortable, far better than I've ever experienced for this kind of money in this area (laterooms 59). I had no hesitation in booking again, but this weeks stay was a little different. I was in a single room on the oppositte side of the hotel, and the room was this time tiny, albeit fairly well equipped. Free internet was not available (on either of my visits) which was dissapointing and inconvenient for me. I also heard my neighbour return to his room at 11pm (which woke me up), and he immediately called recpetion to complain that the tap in his room was still running even though it had been reported at 9am that morning. After much arguing with reception and a couple of visits from hotel porters, it went quiet at around 11.40. The walls must be paper thin because I heard absolutely everything from the chap next door, including his flatulence. My problems came the following morning when I came to clean my teeth, both the hot and cold taps were coming out BOILING hot. I started running the shower and this also was BOILING hot and too hot to step into. I called reception, they sent somebody up to my room, and offered to take me to another room to shower. The other room was a good 3 minute walk across to the other side of the hotel. Extremely inconvenient and now starting to eat into time I did not have. No reduction was offered to me for my inconvenience, and to be honest, I was now in a rush to leave the hotel for my first appointment so no time to argue, In summary, the double room was excellent in my experience, and well worth the extra few pounds. I wouldn't be confident that this would be consistent across the hotel however. Not far off being a really nice place, but I can't believe they let people stay in rooms with such obvious plumbing defects. I drank the water from the tap and now I know it probably came from, or got mixed with water from a hot water tank, which is not hygeinic at all.

1. After paying for our room, they made us wait an additional 30 minutes before the room was ready, a half hour past our booking time. We waited patiently in the small lobby, but then finally asked what was up, and they had become completely unaware that we were still waiting. They were so lost that they thought we needed to pay again.
2. On the top floor, we had to run hot water for 30 minutes before we ever got the water warm enough to bathe.
3. The room was quite warm, with inadequate ventilation to the outside. We asked for a fan, but despite a sign saying fans were available on request, customer service could find no fan.
4. Many things went quite well. Conveniently located to dining and Paddington station, in a safe looking community.
5. We are tempted to go back next time because a) the price was good; b) the room was otherwise perfect for us; c) finding a good hotel is stressful.

The room was very small and some fixtures and fittings were loose. The air-conditioning broke down for the first night - fortunately I had a quiet room, not on the street, so I was able to open the window and still get some sleep. When I reported this to reception in the morning, someone went straight away to check it and it was promptly fixed. On the third night, my keycard didn't work, and when I reported this to reception I was immediately given a new one, as I'd expect. Overall, the room was better than some I'd stayed in in the Paddington area, the shower was powerful, the air-conditioning was effective (when it was working) and the staff were very helpful throughout. If the price was right, I'd be happy to stay there again.

I was given a tiny basement room with a window that opened onto a basement patio used by hotel staff for smoking and for storing broken furniture - unpleasant view and unpleasant smell of smoke resulted if one left the window open. Also room security was poor in that the window, easily accessible from the street, only had an ordinary lock. I asked to be moved and was given a room on the ground floor even smaller than the first. There was no room to even open my suitcase. On a positive note, the Night Manager was very attentive.

we arrived at the hotel and got told that due to works being carried out (over booking??) they had to transfer us to their sister hotel, best western round the corner. we had to leave our car at this hotel though. once there the room was not ready even though we had advised them about our arrival time. so we had to freshen up and get changed in the toilets and leave our bags in the luggage storage. this was all abit annoying after hours of driving. however the location was good, just next to hyde park and handy for the tube. also the area was nice. hotel room was ok, although very small. the bathroom/ shower was tiny! i wouldnt pay the normal room tariff, its ridiculous! but if i got it for the price we did (55 pounds per night) then i might consider stopping there again, mainly for the location.

On the night I arrived (13/5) the boiler had broken and so initially I could not check in and was told I would be booked into another hotel. The young woman on reception was incredibly professional and courteous and I thought she handled the situation very well. She explained the problem tactfully and didn't pass on any of her stress and frustration with the situation. As it happened a late cancellation for a room in a part of the hotel where the boiler was working came in while I was waitiing and so it all turned out OK. The room was lovely. The receptionist had made me feel welcome under difficult circumstances.
I think the calibre of reception staff is incredibly important - it sets the scene and first impressions really do count. My high rating is probably in part influenced by the positive encounter in reception.
Well not sure where to start. Upon arrival not a warm welcome e.g no eye contact from staff and no real greeting just hello. This hotel shows that it is normally over 300 per night to be honest I barely think it is worth the 95 we paid. The main problem with this hotel is the staff, they were not not friendly or welcoming in any way or at all during our stay. In fact when we left nobody even asked if we enjoyed our stay just took our room key and checked us out without any eye contact or even a goodbye. Training of staff is certainly needed. The room was okay, the windows didn't shut properly, the beds were well worn you could even see the dip in the middle of them before you even got on it. the bathroom was tiny and very worn, when i say tiny i mean 3/4 bath toilet and sink with no room at all around. The enamal on the bath was coming off the shower screen was rusty and didn't stop the water going all over the floor, and the general decoration was a very low standard and well worn. My overall view would be alot of staff training and the rooms certainly need a refurb. Wouldn't stay again and very dissapointed.

The room was advertised at something rediculous, saving more than 300 ( sound too good?) you're right, the twin room was a size of a regular single with an extra bed magically squashed in. The bathroom didn't even have room for a toilet roll holder. It was left in the middle of the bathroom.
It was my worst night sleep, as the room was situated right behind the elevator and from 6am it sounded like i was in the elevator. From 7am non-stop squeaky noises from the room above kept us both awake and with the window open we could hear the construction drilling.
Although i didn't have to get up first thing in the morning, i had to get away from this nightmare. We were offered a breakfast for 15 each. Instead we had a great English breakfast at Paddington, for 15 for both of us.
In summary, my point is - i will never stay in this hotel again, however attractive the offer might be, because overall poor experince overweighted good service from the front desk.

The TV was side on to the bed and despite 3 reminders to the front desk staff the pay movies never worked for the duration of the stay. The toilet seat lid was broken and fell off. The one positive aspect of our stay was the fact that they let us check in early (9.30am) which was great as we had been up all night with no accommodation the previous eve. Aside from this we felt really let down and thought that the hotel was seriously mismarketing itself. Avoid if you value service and the ability to communicate with the staff.

I was a little apprehensive about the hotel...
I was a little apprehensive about the hotel after reading some of the reviews. But, for one night's stay, it was worth the risk. The room was very clean, everything worked ok and nothing leaked. There are three points to be aware of though. First, every time a door shut somewhere near, the window rattled (I was in Room 003 in the basement, btw). I had to prop a newspaper under the pane to stop the rattling. Second, the lighting in the room was very dark and depressing. Third, the air conditioning was a bit difficult. If the temperature was between 17-19 degrees C, then it was ok. Put it up to 20 or more, you got hot air blowing from the unit which is situation right about your head! So, I had to decide whether to put up with a headache from the hot air or feel a bit chilly. I opted for chilly, but, couldn't find any spare sheets, blankets or duvets! So, if you are using the room just to sleep, then it is adequate. You could survive there another night. I couldn't bear the thought of coming back to the hotel early to relax and watch some mindless TV before going to bed. I went to the theatre and came back tired in time to sleep. One of my desert island items is Boots wax earplugs - these were very handy! The staff were cordial and my check-in and check-out processes were very efficient. The hotel is 2-3 mins walk from Paddington and a great location to explore central London. The free newspaper in the room is a nice touch, although Daily Mail isn't me! Overall, 'would I stay here again'? Yes, if and only if the price is similar to what I paid this trip (69) and for a maximum for 2 nights.

Others have commented on the small size of the bathrooms. They do not exaggerate. There is room for one person to stand in the floorspace and that is it. You could not even begin to swing a cat and so any felines needing lathering would not fit in anyway.
I was told that I had a complimentary upgrade to a club room. The downstairs part of this arrangement whereby a mezzanine kithenette and sofa area is built into the raised height rooms from the old building is clever in concept, but awkward in execution. The stairs are steep and narrow so any luggage is not easily taken up them, yet this is where the main wardrobe space is. It is also quite a trek from the kitchenette to the bedside, not that there was much room around the double bed. If I had been staying several days or using this as a base for exploring London, then I would have had time and would probaby appreciate the microwave and kitchenette area. No dining table so would have to be used to eating off laps.
In the extended stay I would have definitely been more irritated about the lack of function of the free broadband connection. This was one of the main features for which I selected this hotel, but it didn't work, neither did the movies or other links through the in-house entertainment system so they didn't extract any extra payment from me for that.
Unlike several others, I did eat here. The English breakfast was acceptable and better value when booked the night ahead as it then costs 12 and not 15 per head.
All the staff were polite and helpful and cleanliness was not an issue.

I stayed in a single room which was so small there was no room for my suitcase other than to squeeze it in between the bed and a desk which also doubled as a television base/kettle holder etc., The shower head would not sit in the cradle. Iasked for maintenance and when I retunrned to my room laterin the day the shower head had simply been balanced on the broken holder. I went again to reception and asked for something to be done. I waited and was told that it had to be replaced. On this basis I was moved to another toom. This thankfully was an upgarde to a double room - also tiny). In this room I had to run the shower for a full seven minutes to get any hot water for a shower. I was told by one customer service officer at reception that this was because the boiler was in the basement. On bookin out and being asked if thigs were ok, I mentioned the water situation to another person at reception who said that they did not have nay problems with water in that room which contradicted the previous advice. There was no place for the toilet roll to sit beside the toilet in either room. The toilet roll was on a separate stand which one had to stand up to reach! Or be pre-prepared. The tissues provided would had sanded paint. Had this been budget accommodation then fair enough. But this level of accommodation for the price is completely unsatisfactory. It was clear that the staff are constanlty fielding complaints. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Due to building works at my home, I needed a central place to stay, and at 65 for that night, it was good and acceptable. The room had been termed 'superior single', which did have all the facilities that had been described, but the room was very small indeed! I cannot imagine that this very room (size: tiny; view: looking onto a high white wall) could ever be charged at 346 (normal rate), but at 65 it was fine for my purpose. I also wonder about the 4-star rating. At check-in, I was informed that they did not have my reservation; and it was after some verbal exchanges that it was accepted that the hotel needed to do the follow-up with 'late rooms' (i.e. what had or had not happened), not myself. I was given a room (perhaps it was not quite the 'superior single' I had booked!) and I was given complimentary breakfast in the morning.
Conclusion: a good enough room for my particular purpose.

Room was quite comfortable. However, it was extremely warm even though the heating was off! This made it necessary to open the window which allowed a lot of noise from the busy road below to come in. The bathroom was TINY! Anyone suffering from claustrophia would be advised to avoid a room like this. The price was good for London and the hotel's location was good.

Had we paid in excess of 400 for the room (Club) we'd have cause to complain, but at 99 including breakfast, it was a bargain. Companions paid only 59 for a standard room which was probably an even better bargain (no breakfast though). Yes, the bathroom was tiny, and our room had an open plan staircase leading up to the sleeping area (no good for elderly or less mobile people) and it could have benefitted from a duster prior to our arrival, but I've stayed in hotels charging twice as much for less. If you're on a budget you could do a lot worse.

Really makes one wonder where the 4 star-rating comes from. Looking for good hotels in London has become something like a roulette and room ammenities offered compare badly with other European (big) cities. The only positive constant is the staff, always friendly and helpful.

Very smart hotel, we stayed in a superior twin and got a double bed each. We booked primarily due to the hotels proximity fo Hyde Park and it was literally about a 5 minute walk away. The hotel has parking right outside which is great for convenience, but the 20 on top of the room is a little steep - although I suppose this is London!

I aksed for a hotel near Hyde Park and this was not as close as I was led to believe. The room was awful, although we were apparently upgraded. The bathroom was too small and the rest of the room taken up by a bed and a staircase to a mezzanine floor that we didn't use. The room also smelled of stale smoke and was overheated.
Staff were pleasant enough but not familiar enough with the area to really help us find our way around.

Having checked in for a nice weekend break with my wife, it turned out to be a terrible choice of hotel.
The first room we were given was on the ground floor next to reception. My wife went to use the bathroom and found that someone had decided to leave a present in the toilet. It had not been cleaned by 'house keeping' and it stunk.
The second room we were offered was the size of a postage stamp.
The third and final room was located on the top floor, away from the traffic noise.
We finally managed to get to sleep at 4am having gone through 5 hours of door slamming from the group of guests in the opposite rooms., constant phone calls which they decided to take in the corridors and the couple next door going at it behind the paper thin walls.
All in all a terrible experience, partly the hotels fault, partly the adjoining guests.
We stayed on a friends floor the following night on an air mattress and slept wonderfully.
Also, not sure how 4 stars were given with a 5 channel tv with poor reception and 2 lonely bottles of water in an empty 'mini bar' fridge.

Having paid 85 per ticket it was upsetting to be 20 minutes late for the concert when if we were at the Hyde Park hotel our timings would have been good.
