Royal Cambridge booking fiasco

The hotel was clean and pleasant to stay in. Breakfast was adequate. However, the booking system leaves something to be desired. I booked months in advance on Hotels-London. I booked a twin room at the cost of £110 for 2 nights. After a week, I found I only needed a single room, so emailed to change my booking. I received no answer. I emailed repeatedly until 2 days before my stay, when I rang the hotel direct. The booking was changed and I received a confirmation email. however, the price for a single was now £20 more than my original twin room booking. This was not explained to me on the phone otherwise I wouldn\'t have changed the room. I rang again and tried to change back, but my twin room had now been booked by someone else. How convenient. They did eventually charge me the original price quoted, but I still paid the twin room price for a single! If they had answered my original emails, the price would have been much lower. I can\'t help but feel that they deliberately didn\'t answer my calls until it was within the 48 hour- no cancellation period, so I had no choice. I will not be staying with them again.

Royal Cambridge Paddington review

When trying to use the wash hand basin watar came from the drain flooding the floor, there was no plug to the basin, I reported this and was told it would be fixed, after 2 days the problem occurred again, also the plug, they did not appear to be concerned, guess its normal when you stay there, the TV in the room was only a 14" portable, with only five channels, I will not be staying there again.

Cheap and Cheerful

If you're staying at any of the hotels along Sussex Gardens, don't expect The Ritz. The Royal Cambridge is one of the better hotels I've stayed in. I found the staff very friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Yes, your room is basic but ours was certainly clean and comfortable. Ideal for a long weekend. Breakfast is very basic but again the facilities were clean, the staff friendly and the food edible. As you are so close to the centre of Paddington (a bonus), there are plenty of places nearby where you can get a more substantial breakfast if necessary. I can only speak for the room that I had but if all the rooms are of that standard, there should be very little to complain about.

Friendly reception - poor room

A good central location and an excellent and friendly receptionist are the highlights. My room was just acceptable for the cost but it smelled of smoke and was fairly dingy. The breakfast room was full and the only signs of cooked food were boiled eggs and baked beans! Having been at boarding school for ten years I can put up with these things but I wouldn't take my wife...

Cheap and not very chearful

Check in was easy enough, very friendly. Room was clean. However, was an internal room, so the window was into a corridor, doesnt sound like a problem, but if you are staying for more than one night, suggest you ask for a room with a proper window, as its pretty depressing. The airconditioning worked, although was noisy, as was the plumbing. Decor could do with updating, but overall, you get what you pay for and all hotels for this budget in London are pretty much the same.

Booked a twin room with my sister but arrived to find it was overbooked and only single rooms available on different floors. One room didnt have curtains, the door didn't lock and the shower door didnt close. The other room had cigarette burns in the shower and the door didnt close either. The paintwork was disgusting and mouldy. Reported the main defects to staff and was told they would sort it out....... They didnt. Eat your heart out Faulty Towers!

Cheap and just about okay

My single en suite room was a reasonable size. It had air con instead of an outside window The window looked on to a corridor, but that didn't cause to much noise. The staff member who checked me in was very helpfull, when i couldn't work out the air con they quickly showed me - thanks. It is all rather tired but the shower was very good. Breakfast was vaguely okay, though the dining room is too small. Not a great hotel but for one night okay for the price - In London.

We stayed 4 nights at this hotel and didn´t have solve any major incidents. We only really spent nights there. the rest of the time we spent by wondering around London. Hotel was sutisfactory for this purpose. The location is great. You can be in Hyde Park within 10mins and on Oxford St within 20mins. The Paddington station is just round the corner and there are also bus stops very close by. THere is variety of pubs and restaurants including Fish and chips place 3mins walk. Staff at breakfast was helpfull. Don´t expect anything grand but it will get you started for the day. Eventhough our room was facing the main road and we slept with opne windows the noise was not that bad. ambulance passed by from time to time. if you´re really sensitive bring earplugs. all in all, I would stay again.

Top location

We went to this hotel with an open mind having read some pretty poor reviews but we came away satisfied that we had received value for money. Yes, the hotel is looking a little tired and we had to find our room number using the light from our mobile phones but the room itself was clean, spacious and comfortable. There was plenty of hot water in the en-suite (once we had discovered that the taps were incorrectly labelled) and this too was clean. We stayed for 2 nights and the room was replenished during this time. With two young children, travelling was straightforward: the hotel is only a 5 minute walk from Paddington station. We would use it again for this reason (we might take our own food for breakfast though!)

Be Warned!

Where to start...
First of all they tried to overcharge me, the room had been lazily hoovered but still looked dirty due to the years of built up grime on the incredibly dated decor, the bedhead on both beds was broken, and I could feel every spring in the mattress it was very uncomfortable.
The bathroom was just gross, bath panels falling off, dirty looking shower head, I got a knock after my shower telling me that I had to stop showering as there was a leak in the room below.
The furniture was cheap, stained and impractical. The tea making facilities were laughable, the internet was down whilst I stayed and there was no offer of assistance as to where I could find alternative internet. In fact one reception member told me to go in the wrong direction. When asking for a restaurant recommendation in the area, I was told that he 'didn't know, he doesn't really know the area'.
The bedsheets were on inside out, the light outside my room was broken so I could not see where to insert the key, and despite me asking reception twice to get it fixed nothing was done and no one wanted to tell me anything. This was an obvious fire hazard, in addition to the hoover that I had to step over in the stairway (that was there the entire 2 days I stayed), and the bags of laundry and cleaning products I had to clamber over to get into the lift.
To top it all off there were male gentilaia scrawled on the walls next to the lift on the 1st floor. Lovely.
Not at all worth the money that was spent. And utterly disgraceful excuse for a hotel.

My room was nothing like what the picture portrayed. My bathroom stank of sewage the entire week, and i kept checking if there was a leak somethere. Very basic, old room in dire need of a refurbish.
The good points was that is was clean, and the breakast included was decent.
Very good location and in hindsight, value for money. If you need a place to rest your head then it ticks the box

Review of royal cambridge

I stayed at this hotel with my cousin on 15th January (Saturday night). We booked it last minute to see a gig in London.
Location is great. Staff were quite helpful.
The room was small and quite dingy. Clean beds and sheets but the decor was dull.
The bathroom had a bad smell and the floor was quite dirty - i.e the drain hole in the floor! I don't like germs! But based on the 75£ we paid I guess you can't expect much.
We had breakfast included: awful! cheap 10p bread from lidl, Asda price cornflakes, sausages that looked like they had been cooked a week ago, and cheap orange juice and apple juice!
I won't stay there again.

The receptionists were all friendly and helpful. The hotel was slightly confusing to find your way around, especially on 4th floor!! The room itself was very clean and comfortable but there was no hairdryer and the shower was tempermental, so we made do with the bath!
The breakfast was a little sparse, only tinned apricots as fruit and only white bread. However, all in all, it was reasonable value for the amount we paid.

No frills, great value for money

Overnight stay in London for work purposes, excellent location thanks to being a short walk from Paddington. Friendly staff as well as a clean, spacious and comfortable room. Only gripe was a sash window in the room was clearly broken and would not shut properly (it was wide open when I arrived and this on a day where the outside temperature was close to zero). Room heating made up for this overnight but the room was quite cold first thing in the morning. As I didn't raise the issue/ask for a change of room I can't comment on how helpful the staff are with such requests.
