Alternative Hair Show continues to raise money for good causes

October 6th, 2011

Launched in 1983 by Tony Rizzo after the sad death of his son Valentino, The Alternative Hair Show has been doing its bit for charity ever since, and will appear at the Royal Albert Hall (pictured) on October 16th.

As you might expect, the spectacle is based around inventive, eye-catching hairstyles, created each year around a central theme, which this year is ‘Illusion’.

Hair artists from around the world now come to this illustrious event, which also presents the International Visionary Award to best new hair artist.

Over the years more than £8million has been raised by the show for leukaemia and lymphoma research, so visitors know that just by attending they are contributing to a fantastic cause. Tickets start at £20.

Hotels-London.co.uk can provide over 600 hand-picked London hotels for anyone looking to attend this event. Kensington Close Hotel is within easy reach of the Royal Albert Hall.

Experience the Frieze Art Fair in Regent’s Park this October

September 29th, 2011

One of the biggest contemporary art festivals in the world, the Frieze Art Fair prides itself on showcasing only the most exciting up-and-coming work, with the focus solely on living artists.

This year, it will pitch up in Regent’s Park (pictured) once again from October 13th-16th. Over 500 galleries apply to take part each year, but only 170 make the cut, so visitors can be sure that this really is the cream of the crop.

Each festival for the last four years has attracted around 60,000 visitors, and this time around a similar figure is expected. The most exciting feature of the fair is Frame, an area dedicated to providing a platform for the work of galleries who have been around for less than six years, with solo presentations on display.

Look out also for the video and performance artist Anahita Razmi, who has won the coveted Emdash Award this year, an accolade given to the best new artist based outside the UK. She beat 550 competitors to get the title, so you can be sure this exhibition will be a highlight.

Hotels-London.co.uk is the place to go for all your accommodation needs, with over 650 hand-picked hotels found throughout the city. Of these, the Macdonald Hotel in Kings Cross provides particularly good access to Regent’s Park.

RHS London Autumn Harvest Show gets creative with food

September 29th, 2011

The RHS London Autumn Harvest Show is very different from the image that most people conjure up in their heads when they hear there is a harvest festival on. With surprises at every turn and always some new and exciting way of looking at food, this is an event which could change your culinary outlook forever.

From October 4th-5th at Lindley and Lawrence Halls near St James’s Park, the finest seasonal ingredients are all put to new and inventive use, with show highlights including the fairly self-explanatory Giant Mushroom Competition, the colourful Dahlia Extravaganza and the friendly Harvest Hangout, featuring food-themed poetry, readings and music as well as soups and other delights made from food foraged from the wild.

There are plenty of informative talks to give you some ideas of what to do with all these new and exciting ingredients, among them Helen Babbs, acclaimed author of ‘My Garden, the City and Me: Rooftop Adventures in the Wilds of London’, wonderfully eccentric wild mushroom picker Mrs Tee (former owner of the world’s largest Great Dane) and Carl Warner, who will be exhibiting some of his astonishing Foodscapes, pieces of art created using food.

Hotels-London.co.uk has plenty of exciting hotels located near the event halls, including the superb Kingsway Hall in Covent Garden and the excellent Strand Palace Hotel.

Admission is free for RHS members, while for non-members it is £5 on Tuesday, £3 on Wednesday. For more information on the RHS London Autumn Harvest Show, visit http://www.rhs.org.uk/

Autumn Cheese and Wine Festival comes to the South Bank

September 29th, 2011

There are plenty of people out there that are fond of both wine and cheese, and for those people the Autumn Cheese and Wine Festival cannot fail to be anything but a treat, especially as nearly all the events are free to enter.

Running plenty of events across the weekend from October 14th-16th in Southbank Centre Square, there will be plenty of opportunities to taste the delicious cheeses and wines on show, as well as take in demonstrations that will reveal how best to use them in your cooking at home.

Chef Coordinator Valentina Harris leads the charge on all three days, beginning each programme with an array of Italian cookery walkthroughs. Top quality cheeses and wines will be put to good use in savoury and sweet dishes, including Maccheroni ai 4 Formaggi, Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli and Zabaglione.

There will be lessons on how to achieve the best results when pairing wine with different foods, as well as a beer and cheese pairing demonstration, a chocolate and wine matching class and an introduction to finding wine to suit some of the world’s smelliest and strongest cheeses.

Hotels-London.co.uk can provide many hotels with great access to the South Bank, including the conveniently located Bermondsey Square Hotel, and even the Croydon Park Hotel just a short train journey away.
