Prior to arrival asked for garden view, and a room with no stairs spoke to Dirk who said would try to arrange this. On arrival quickly processed through the check in with very helpful staff.Rooms allocated both had views of the garden. The rooms although slighly small were in immaculate condition. the location is ideal 5minutes walk to Russell st tube which is on the Piccadilly line so ideal for Covent Garden,Leiceter Sq and all the theatres.
All the staff extremely helpful, pleasant nothing was too much trouble.
on a down side the price of drinks even by London standards are pretty high, but this did not detract from a very enjoyable stay, and would definately stay at the Montague again.

This was a very friendly hotel with service staff going out of their way to please. The room was of average size but well equipped and very comfortable. The en suite was clean and had a good shower. A nice point to note about this hotel is that it's in a quiet area which means a good nights sleep. I find a lot of hotel in London very noisy with traffic etc.. Overall this was a good find and will definitely stay again.

This is an old building so the bedrooms perhaps reflect their original size. The groiund floor reception rooms are nicely set out and the staff service exemplary. However the third floor bedroom corridor could do with some smartening up and I found my bedroom cramped (I asked to be moved to a more expensive , bigger room but found that no better because they'd filled the space with a bigger bed!)

This hotel was fabulous! We had a real suprise when we arrived as it was so 'oldy worldy'. The bar was very comfortable and had an outside seating area with lovely warm heaters, the staff even provided blankets in case you were still a bit nippy! All the staff were so helpful and couldn't do enough for you. The breakfast was fantastic with a great choice. The hotel was well situated for sight seeing, being accross the road from the British Museum and a short walk away from Soho and Covent Garden. We will definately stay at this hotel when we next visit London.

Like any hotel there are good things and bad things to say....however in this case it's mostly good with one negative...this is what we thought....hope it's useful.
First the good:
- Great staff...from the welcome at the door to reception through to restaurant/bar staff....all were excellent.
- the hotel is beautifully decorated...it's not enormous so the public areas felt cosy and welcoming...like a small scale country house....
- we ate in the restaurant one night and the food was excellent and at approx 25 for 2 courses, well worth the money for London prices.
- we had afternoon tea in the conservatory...again...it was lovely. Good selection of cake with leaf tea and champagne.
- good choice at breakfast both cooked and continental. Again, staff all excellent.
- felt safe here and would stay here on my own if I needed a central hotel and it was niced to be welcomed back from the theatre etc - a small touch but a good one!
- Reception and concierge staff were friendly, efficient and helpful.
- location is on a reasonably quiet street virtually next door to the British Museum.
- our room was in good condition, very comfy bed, air conditioned, clean and with tea/coffee making facilities and bottled water (which was replaced after we drank the first lot!)
The bad point?
- we stayed in a standard double room and it was on the small side. For example, when I sat at the dressing table, my husband couldn't get past me as there was not enough room between chair and wall. The suitcase had to be kept in the wardrobe (although there was a table with two small chairs that could have been moved if necessary) - if we'd had much more luggage, I don't know where we'd have put it! This didn't bother us because we weren't in our room much...but if you like a lot of space, it's worth thinking about.

First class greeting, quality room but very very small, Although being tall I am not broad and my wife is size 8. It was a struggle to be in the room together unless in bed. bar service and ambiance was good. Location is great for theatres and shops, galleries etc. We were lucky to park outside. Perhaps our checking out was at an unfortunate time, but it was the only time that no one was on the door or available to assist with cases (09:30 a.m.!)

We had special extras of trip to London Eye and Pre theatre dinner .The concierge was charming and also the two receptionists .Its very convenient for Covent Garden and BM .They do go out of their way to make it nice for you.Worth a try at late rom prices.

Given the pictures of the rooms on the internet and previous reviews I was quite excited about staying in this hotel. However, I was totally disappointed when I arrived there. The rooms have to be the smallest rooms I have ever stayed in. With two people in a double room only one could move around the room at a time. The decor was dated and depressing, however they are refurbishing the rooms, although they are still the same size. When I complained to the receptionist the first evening he was prepared to move me to a bigger room however it was at a hefty price increase which I declined. The first impression lasted throughout my stay although I have to say the food and service in the restaurant was very good.

Although some of the rooms can be on the small side, they are beautifully looked after with nice decor. The bathrooms are modern and spotlessly clean. On a personal level I have only been lucky enough to stay at this hotel twice. However, due to the nature of my job I book this hotel regularly for both UK and Overseas visitors on business. The hotel is very well situated within easy walking distance to some of the major attractions in London. Breakfast at the hotel is a truly pleasurable experience and one that should be savoured. I love this hotel - a little oasis of peace and quiet in the heart of London - a true gem and I hope it doesnt change. Incidentally, I have also sent visitors to The Rubens and Hotel 41, along with the Montague all these hotels fall under the Red Carnation Group and are all excellent - well done Red Carnation Group!
Enjoyed our stay at this very friendly, clean , smallish hotel in what seemed to be a very secure and quiet area. Easy to get to the close tube station or walk to quite a few tourist attractions. My only complaint about the hotel is the abiltiy to hear the occupants above us everytime they walked across the floor , got into or out of bed etc. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this hotel if you want to have a truly "British" experience, lots of little neat shops and pubs in the area to enjoy, too. The reason for the low family friendly score is because I think they basically cater to business persons simply because the rooms are not meant to accommadate really more than 2 people. By using the extra large suite we were able to make it work .

Our room was a standard twin and despite being quite small, it was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

This was our second stay at Montague on the Gardens so we knew what to expect. The rooms were beautiful, although small, and spotlessly clean. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. We decided to venture to the restaurant for breakfast this stay (rather than have room service) and it was a good idea as the cooked breakfast was fantastic!!! Great location - we didn't realise just how close to Oxford Street (for shopping) and Covent Gardens/West End we were. Ventured to the British museum (directly opposite) on this stay which was very impressive and free (apart from suggested donation/special exhibits). For us, we would not consider staying anywhere else in London as The Montague on the Gardens has everything we need!

We have stayed at this hotel before and were again really impressed with both the service and food(albeit we only had breakfast in the hotel). The staff were so helpful and whilst the rooms were small they were beautifully furnished and decorated. We highly recommend this hotel as a a good base for sightseeing/shopping and the shows. Attention to detail is key in this hotel and worth a visit.

Lovely hotel opposite the British Museum and only 10 mins walk to Covent Garden. The 2 night weekend stay with breakfast and champage is terrific value and about a third off the price of the rack rate.

We arrived at approx 2.00 p.m. (our room was ready) and because we had not been guests before, the concierge gave us a guided tour of the bar & restaurant explaining times etc. The room was small but clean and comfortable and adequate for our short stay. Situated in a lovely area with a small park near by. Cannot comment on food etc because we didn't eat or drink in the hotel. Other guests seemed satisfied and relaxed. All the staff were excellent and I would recommend it to a friend.

This hotel is ideally situated for most attractions, we walked 10 mins from Kings Cross to the Hotel in Bloomsbury. Later in the evening we walked 15 mins to the West End to find the Aldwych Theatre, very convenient especially for the rate. The staff are very polite and accomodating and the interior of the hotel is very tastefully decorated with attention to finite detail. Breakfast was superb and although we didn't dine in the restaurant, we spoke with other guests who recommended it. A great hotel worthy of several more visits over coming years.

The hotel was very easy to find, just off Russell Square, Bloomsbury, one street away from the British Museum. It was in a very quiet location yet 15 mins walk to China Town, Theatre Land etc. Two minutes walk to bus stops.
We spent the weekend walking around London, seeing places we would not normally visit. Smashing walk on Sunday starting at St James Park, Green Park, Hyde Park and finished in Kensington Gardens. The hotel kept our case so we did not have to take it with us.
Very friendly staff in the hotel, helpful but not obtrusive. They had not rec'd our laterooms booking on arrival but automatically upgraded us to a newly refurbished room. It was lovely.
The bar was expensive, 8.95 for a glass of red wine plus service charge, but nice for an occasional treat, especially as we were celebrating my husband's 50th.
We hope to return later in the year with friends to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
We highly recommend this hotel for comfort, service and convenience.
Enjoy your stay!!!
The quality of service was excellent and had nice personal touches. The food was good but a little over priced for what you actually get (particularly the pre-theatre meal!) Drinks are also very expensive. The room was very nice and well equipped with toiletries/ hairdryer/ tea and coffee facilities and a complimentary dressing robe to wear during your stay. The room was quite small however.
Overall a very nice hotel but I hope that they get rid of the smoking in public areas (such as the bar) as this was the one thing that let it down.

Very nice hotel in an excellent location. Rooms are small but to a very good standard. The staff, service, and attention to detail was exemplary throughout our stay and made a welcome change from my experiences in other London hotels. One gripe, the prices in the bar were ridiculous! Otherwise this is propably as good a hotel for the rate as you will find in London. This company really understand the concept of customer service. Highly Recommended

Excellent hotel, highly recommended. Staff very attentive and helpful from the moment we arrived. Room was very clean and very comfortable. Not huge rooms but it is London. Can't fault the facilities or the standard of the accomodation at all. Location superb, 2 minutes from the British Museum, 5 minutes from the tube & 10 minutes from Oxford St. One very minor point was the room service breakfast was incorrect both times. We would still go back without any hesitation. Great.
Next to British Museum and in strolling distance of Covent Garden. Exterior very welcoming and entrance hall equally so. We were taken up to our room by a polite porter. The room smelt and clearly the aircon was not working. We complained and were then shown to a better room (why not offer us this room first?). We had to chase up the complimentary champagne. Room was small for a highly rated hotel but was well equipped. We would only return on the package we had. At the rack rate it would have been very overpriced and pretentious.

The hotel was ideally situated for Covent Garden and the West End, both being within walking distance. Situated on a side street next to the British Museum, there was very little traffic and no noise. The hotel decor was classy and the staff could not do enough for us. They were friendly without being intrusive. Our room was nicely furnished, if slightly on the small side, but equipped with everything we needed. Our weekend break came with a complimentary bottle of champagne, which was much appreciated, especially as the drinks in the bar were expensive. Definitely worth a second visit.
