Good value, quiet location nr Kings X, decent breakfast, budget room, poor shared shower

I paid £38 pounds for a single room with shared toilet and shared shower. This represented very good value. The room was fine (small and 'studenty'), the shower was poor (however at this price I am still impressed). For the price I was suprised to get breakfast which was a basic full English - a welcome bonus. The location was good for me arriving by train (200m from Kings Cross) and was very quiet (another welcome bonus) as it was off the main roads. The value will probably bring me back.

A very unhappy experience at this B&B.
I had booked a double room, but the room we got was the second-smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in. There was no space to store bags and barely 18 inches space around the bed - and the bed was not even a proper double bed. The "bathroom" was a tiny cubicle. After complaining to the manager, we were moved, but the "substantially larger" room we were promsed turned out to be the third-smallest I've ever stayed in.
Breakfast was pretty poor and the service here was dreadful. The 2 fried eggs I ordered were unceremoniously dumped in front of me whilst I was still eating my cereal (a bowl of sawdust, somewhat euphamistically billed as muesli). A request for Earl Grey tea was met with a cold, blank stare.
On the plus side, the manager did offer to waive the second night's charge if we wanted to leave and go somewhere else, but I couldn't face the prospect of traipsing around London trying to find another room.

Good Price, Good Location, Terrible Mattress, Terrible Noise

Hotel is clean and reception and restaurant staff are friendly. Rooms, bathrooms, and the place overall are clean. Good price and convenient location. Food is OK; they offer full English breakfast with beans, slice of ham, a saussage, a fried egg, glass of milk, glass of orange juice, butter, jam, toast, coffee, and tea. No cheese though!!
Matresses are terrible with sprung system giving you pain allover your body, noise is heard whenever one moves in the room next door or upstairs.
Free wi-fi in all rooms.
Place is OK overall and would stay there again.

Great single room with a fab full english brekkie!

Great location - 5 mins walk from K.Cross tube, pubs & restaurants galore in the surrounding area. Really friendly staff on reception & at breakfast - the room was small but perfectly formed with good free WIFI 24hrs, a comfy bed, whole place was clean & well decorated. The breakfast was gorgeous! everyone was having full english, OJ, toast, jam n marmalade, I asked for scrambled egg & bacon & it was quick, hot and very tasty indeed! Would definitely recommend - only let down slightly by the shower room - its on the next floor up from the single room I stayed in & could do with a refurb, its tiny with a dodgy shower head/very slippery floor but constant hot water & good pressure! - it was also really good they had a separate toilet!
As with most B&B's in this price range, the walls are paper thin so take your ear plugs - apart from that it was a brilliant place to stay - I would definitely go & stay again. For £38 with that breakfast makes it amazingly good value for money for Central London!

For a last minute overnight stay with no fuss but a clean bed, no traffic noise and a breakfast where it very charmingly and unusually said 'Just ask for a second helping', I found this ideal. Quite the best of the half dozen or so hotels within 200 yards of it where I have occasionally stayed in the past. Yes, the shower was not en suite, but it was clean and worked and it was possible easily to understand HOW to work it.

Average dated but clean.

This Hotel could do with a lick of paint and some new bedclothes. Its been a long time since I slept under a blanket! We, unfortunately, were led to a basement room which was dark and dingy. As it is in a great location we only used the room to sleep so it was ok. The whole hotel was spotlessly clean which is the most important thing. Breakfast was not great as they do not cater for vegetarians which was a surprise these days, so I was just offered eggs and beans. I would consider staying again if it wasn't in the basement.

A decent place for an overnight stay

I booked this hotel mainly because it was quite last minute and I needed somewhere near Kings Cross Station for the following morning that wasn't going to cost me £100.
It was only myself travelling and because I had appointments in London all day & night I literally only slept in the room, which it was perfect for.
My room was in the basement and I had to share a bathroom and shower with the other room next door, but I barely saw or heard them so it wasn't a big deal.
I slept well and had a decent enough breakfast so there really is nothing to moan about, especially when you consider the price.
I actually left an item of mine in the room which the hotel kindly posted to my home address free of charge, and for that reason alone I am very grateful.
If I was going to London for the same duration on my own again then I would not have a problem staying here again.

Could be cheaper

The room was clean and equipped with all the basics you'd expect. At £65 a night though, I didn't really feel like I was getting my money's worth. Having said that, the staff were very helpful, personable and accommodating. If the rooms were a little better appointed and luxurious,it would certainly be worth the price.

Better than expected

When a single room with shared bathroom facilities costs GBP 38, expectations are low and mine were exceeded. This small hotel is clean, safe and professional. The separate shower for my top-floor room was tiny (you can expect your clothes to get wet as you shower), but it is there. I shared my breakfast table with stimulating guests from Sweden and I'd stay at this hotel again.

Close to the Eurostar

This is a no frills hotel that is basic but clean. We stayed for one night in an en suite twin room, as this offered reasonable value for the area. The room was small but adequate for a short stay. The bedroom and bathroom could do with some updating as some of the fixtures and fittings were rather worn and the beds were rather uncomfortable. The best aspect of this hotel is its closeness to St Pancreas Station and the Eurostar, the walk took us less than 5 minutes. This hotel is fine for a short overnight stay but I wouldn't recommend staying much longer.

Will certainly use again

I've stayed at various hotels and b&bs around the UK, some have been great others glad to leave. But this hotel was just what I'd hoped for. Good location (very near to Kings Cross rail & tube), close to concert venue, and I was greeted with helpful friendly staff. As a lone female, I also felt safe and secure there - this alone goes a long way to make me say this is a hotel I'll book again.

You get what you pay for!

Room was clean but very small; no signage to warn of descending staircase beyond door to our room - I almost fell backwards down a flight of stairs; bed was more like a large single than a double (though a double would probably not have fitted); breakfast room looked more like a "Greasy Jo's Cafe" with furniture that just walked out of the 70's, and was so crowded, we couldn't get a table, so went for breakfast elsewhere. Disappointed, and won't be back.

Friendly, courteous and efficient reception, decent breakfasting staff who acted quickly (albeit breakfast room was cramped, and formica tables should be ditched once new room available - but they are refurbishing, so hopefully that will improve, and they have to refurbish sometime!!!).
My room was decent and good value for London - very clean (as was the whole place that I saw), tidy, sufficiently furnished although small and at the back (that meant quieter, I imagine) and no table to work at. TV a bit small and few channels available, but room being clean with clean bathroom and shower was great. By comparison with others in London, this is very good value and felt 'safe' with a comfortable ambience. Pleasant atmosphere. Good location for me.

The location of the hotel is very convenient. I live in a 3-bed room. The room is clean and the there is sufficent hot water supply. This is excellent, especially in the cold winter. The English breadfast is delicious. However, the Wifi signal in my room is quite weak. There is no lift and the stairs is narrow. It might be a bit inconvenient if you have large and luggage with you.

Very Pleased

We needed a one-night stay close to St. Pancras station. We weren't expecting much but were pleasantly surprised by Macdonald Hotel.
We arrived early not expecting to check in but hoping to drop off our bags while we kept an appointment across town. However, a room was ready and the manager gladly let us check in early. The room was small but not crowded, very clean, warm and a most comfortable bed. The staff was helpful, provided a hairdryer and extra cream for our coffee. Breakfast the next morning was delicious! The breakfast room was a bit chilly but the food was cooked to perfection.
We were very pleased with our stay at Macdonald Hotel and would definitely recommend it.

Better breakfast but Victorian plumbing

As budget hotels in the King's X area go this was a pleasant surprise in terms of service (front desk and breakfast staff were friendly and helpful). The room was small and basic but clean. The cooked breakfast was a cut above the cereal and toast standard. My only major gripe was that the (shared) shower ran hot and cold, presumably as taps were turned on elsewhere in the hotel.

We stayed for one night in a room no bigger than an airing cupboard and just as hot, there was a fan in the room but the windows were locked shut so all it did was circulate warm air. The plumbing made an awful noise every time it was embarrassing to use it.

That said the staff were very pleasant and the location cannot be faulted.
