a guide to soho

about soho

Few areas in London are more interesting and diverse than Soho. Home to a large number of Italian and Chinese immigrants, there is a mix of cultures available here which makes Soho a very popular, and consequently very crowded nightspot.

By day, take a walk around the many boutique clothes shops and eateries. Soho also houses many media companies, including Virgin Radio and the British Board of Film Classification. The whole area has a certain aura of cool about it that makes Soho the place to be seen out and about.

Some of Soho’s more famous establishments include Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, which has played host to many of the great jazz players of recent times, and continues to function despite the death of its eponymous founder in 1996. Another hugely fashionable place to be seen is Bar Italia, a twenty-four hour coffee bar that serves as the favoured location for Italians in London to congregate. Interestingly, the room directly above Bar Italia was the place where John Logie Baird first demonstrated his new invention, the television, in 1926.

Did You Know? One of the more unusual landmarks in Soho is a small water pump that was discovered by Dr. John Snow in 1854 to be the cause of Soho’s cholera outbreak.
