Upon arrival in Paddington, prepare to spend most of your time marvelling at the sights around you. Firstly, the train station is widely considered to be one of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s finest works, rendering the site a worthy tourist attraction in itself. If you are travelling into London from Heathrow, you will be arriving on these very platforms, so we recommend you take the time to appreciate these surroundings.
Just a short tube ride away from Paddington (take a Southbound train on the Circle or District Line and change at Notting Hill Gate for the Central Line to Marble Arch) is Hyde Park, and right next door to it, Kensington Gardens. It would be quite easy to make a day of it here, as there is plenty to see. As you walk around, you will eventually come across the resplendent Kensington Palace and the gold-plated Albert Memorial, a tribute to Queen Victoria’s husband.
The Princess Diana Memorial Fountain can also be found, and the remembrance theme is continued with the July 7th memorial a little further on. It is also possible to rent a pedal boat and venture out onto ‘The Serpentine’, the long, narrow waters that carve their way into the centre of Hyde Park.
Our tip: Visit Speaker’s Corner, in the north-eastern corner of Hyde Park. Since 1872, it has been a legal right for anyone to speak here about whatever they like, provided they do not use obscene language.
From the North: The main road into Paddington is the A5, so if you can find your way onto it just head South and you will eventually head towards Paddington Station.
From the South: Directly below Paddington is Hyde Park so drive into London using the A4202/A4204 and Hyde Park should be on your right.
