a guide to greenwich

about greenwich

A visit to Greenwich will involve taking to the seas and the skies as you discover the history of Britain’s ocean voyages and the astonishing discoveries of our astronomers. The National Maritime Museum is awash with history; visitors can learn about Admiral Nelson and hear tales of British explorers and their many daring expeditions, as well as seeing examples of maps, charts, coins, weapons and uniforms that reveal Britain’s seafaring past.

The Royal Observatory is equally fascinating. Visit the astronomy galleries, where you can learn how to guide a space mission and touch a 4.5 billion year old meteorite. The Observatory’s 28-inch refracting telescope is the seventh largest in the world, and is a superb way to view the night sky. By far the most awe-inspiring place in the Observatory, however, is the Planetarium, an essential experience.

The Observatory itself is situated in the pleasant surroundings of Greenwich Park. Spanning 183 acres, the park also includes a boating lake, tea room and wild deer park.

Our tip: Straddle the prime meridian line at the Royal Observatory, and find yourself standing on both sides of the world simultaneously!
