a guide to docklands

about docklands

Once the world’s biggest port, now one of the most significant centres for business in the country, Docklands and Canary Wharf can be found just a short distance to the east of Tower Bridge. The Museum of London Docklands is the premier attraction here; visitors can learn about the history of Londoners, and in particular tales of the many people throughout history who have travelled into London on the River Thames.

Animal lovers may be interested to know that London has a thirty-two acre farm right in the middle of the city. Mudchute Park and Farm can be found tucked away on the Isle of Dogs, and is home to over two hundred farm animals. Whilst you are on the island, West India Quay provides a relatively quiet shopping alternative, whilst elsewhere the Thames Barrier Park is a very attractive area for a walk.

The area has also been used as a set location for a number of big-budget films in the last few years, including Guy Ritchie’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’, Bond film ‘The World Is Not Enough’ and ‘Love Actually’.

Did You Know? Canary Wharf is home to London’s tallest building. The 235m, fifty floors high structure at 1, Canada Square was built by Argentinean architect César Pelli in 1991.
