It is probably the case that when someone mentions London, Islington and Clerkenwell are fairly low down on the list of locations that comes to mind. Despite this, there are a couple of hidden gems to be found. This is quite literally the case with Clerkenwell’s Hatton Garden, where you will find enough jewellery stores to keep you occupied for a week.
Clerkenwell is also home to the intriguing Marx Memorial Library, a collection of radical archives and over forty thousand books concerning Socialism, Marxism, the Spanish Civil War and the British Labour movement.
Moving into Islington, perhaps the most well-known attraction here is Sadler’s Wells Dance Theatre, a world-renowned venue for international dance, showing a wide range of dance styles.
Did You Know? The Granita restaurant in Islington was the scene of the now famous meeting between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown in 1994, following the death of the then Labour leader John Smith. The two men are said to have used the meeting to decide who would be Prime Minister and who would be Chancellor if the Labour Party won the next election.
