As a quieter alternative to the lively, bouncing West End, Bloomsbury offers more peaceful surroundings. It is one of the more culturally significant areas of London; its former residents include John Constable, Charles Dickens, and George Bernard Shaw. Look out for the blue plaques found at the sites where they once lived.
Also worth a visit are the four big squares in the area – Russell Square, Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury Square and Gordon Square. Russell Square in particular offers a haven of tranquility with its relaxing ambience and floor-level fountain, while Bloomsbury Square provides a pleasant array of plants and flowers to complement your walk.
We suggest you do not pass up the opportunity to visit the British Museum, which attracts upwards of six million visitors a year and contains exhibitions and artefacts from the civilisations of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, India, Africa and the Middle East. Best of all, entrance is free.
Did You Know? Bloomsbury was once home to the famous ‘Bloomsbury Group’, a collection of artists, philosophers and writers from the early 1900’s including Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster, famous for their bohemian lifestyle that was considered unbelievably shocking at the time.
From the North: Go down Camden High Street, take the left fork at Mornington Crescent onto Eversholt Street, continuing straight down until you reach Russell Sqaure, at which point take a right to reach Bloomsbury.
From the South: Approach on Kingsway and continue straight on when you reach the crossroads at Holborn tube station. Continue along Southampton Row and you will eventually reach Russell Square.
