This should have been a terrific place to stay for the weekend as it was immediately next to Tower Hill tube station. Unfortunately District and Circle lines were both closed for the weekend so there was a 10-15 min walk to the next station which was irritating but admittedly not the hotel's fault. Check-in was in a sumptuous reception room. Whilst there was a short queue, the receptionist was apologetic for my wait and extremely efficient in serving me. The bedroom was comfortable and clean with spacious bed and ample supplies of tea/coffee making facilities, as well as shower gel, conditioner etc. Given how well the room was presented I was a bit disappointed to find a razor in the bathroom shower tray which I presume belonged to the previous occupant of the room. After unpacking I tried the leisure facilities which were excellent and both the steam room and aromatherapy room were remarkably relaxing. Before going out for the evening, I visited the bar where the food was good and well priced.
The only real downside - and one which somewhat marred the weekend - was breakfast the next morning. This was very expensive for a continental (£14.50) and the supplement (£8.50) for a full English seemed extreme, especially as I tend not to eat the continental if I'm provided with a healthy plateful of sauasage, bacon, egg etc. To be honest I wouldn't have minded the price if the service was good. However whilst tea appeared promptly the milk didn't. Both I and the couple next to me independently asked for milk but none arrived. Eventually I 'stole' a jug from the table next to me which had just been vacated, whilst the couple adjacent ended up filling a glass with milk from the cereal section for their tea/coffee. Needless to say it wasn't that easy to attract the attention of a waitress for a 'top-up' either. For the price, I'd have thought they might stretch to individual pots of tea/coffee for the table.
Whilst the comfort of the room and the great leisure facilities would encourage me to consider staying there again as a great weekend break, I think I'd probably try breakfast at one of several pubs/bars/cafes nearby as a cheaper alternative which'd likely offer a reaonable full english at a fraction of the price and almost certainly provide better service.
