I work in London at least 4 - 5 days per month so I've become a regular of the smaller boutique hotels within the £90-100 per night rate. This hotel is in great location for public transport, has the feel of an authentic London guest house that has the added benefit of being completely innovated inside. The room was fresh and modern which was unexpected having passed through the lobby / reception area which has a very traditional feel - good contrast. Clean rooms with all new / modern equipment made for a pleasant stay.

After reading reviews on Trip Advisor (too late to change my booking) I was fearful of what I would find. However, for a 3 day (2 night) break in London, the Grand Royale was just grand. Location is perfect - only 2mins from the Central Line (Queensway) and the same from Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens. Twin room in the basement was larger than I'd been expecting, well appointed although the shower is small. I stayed on 2 of the colder nights of the winter but Reception responded straight away to a request for extra blanket and room heater. They allowed me to check in early and were happy to store my luggage on the final day. With free apples every time you pass Reception, it was really good for a city break.
Summary
This is the second time we have stayed here. The entrance, lounge bar and dining rooms are rather impressive and makes staying here a little more exciting than your normal regency terraced hotel. It is clean and the staff are all efficient and nothing was a problem- even when we wanted to change our room. The reason we changed room was this year it was a lot smaller than last year, so you may wish to bear in mind when booking. Breakfast is £12 if you book or £15 if you just turn up.

Good value, convenient location.

Because I got a last minute deal, the hotel was (for London) excellent value. But people paying the rack rate may not be so happy. Although my room was clean and kitted out in an up to date way it was VERY small - I was upgraded to a double on arrival and this double was tiny so I dread to think what the single was like. I heard other guests complaining about not being able to swing a cat in their room and there being no space for luggage. In my room both the phone and the safe were dysfunctional although the staff I had to summon in the small hours to assist were alert and helpful. The public areas of the hotel are very characterful with a lot of 19th century panelling and Victorian paintings - kind of like the set of a Hammer horror movie. The location is very good for shops, public transport, and Hyde Park. This place must make friends and enemies in equal measure.

I would definitely stay there again great sized room. Excellent :)
Summary
The room was tiny with lots of fittings hanging off. Had to remind reception about the wine and water that was supposed to be in the room ( this spoilt things some what ). The wine was only a small bottle, and for the price the breakfast was lacking in quality.
This was my second stay at this hotel and fourth stay in the Shaftesbury group (I've also stayed at the Shaftesbury Hyde Park just up the road). the entrance and lounge is very grand. Once again the room was small, but spotlessly clean with a very comfy bed and good TV system. The bathroom was the same standard as the other hotel I've stayed at - clean, bright, modern fittings, fluffy towels and nice spa products. The only small niggle was that I asked for a room away from the lift - but got one directly opposite. Having said that I didn't hear a thing all night - so the rooms are well sound insulated . The location is also perfect, equidistant between the Central and the District/Circle line. I would definitely stay here again.
