Funny little room but adequate for one night, - slept well
Summary
I was very disappointed with my stat at the Garth. The bed in my room was horrendous. Spongey mattress with springs that irritated and made sleeping very uncomfortable. The headboard was not attached and kept bouncing against the wall disrupting mine and my neighbors sleep. The room itself is incredibly small. The room next door had a very squeaky door again was very irritating and disruptive. Staff wasn\'t overly friendly either. All-in-all, I would not recommend the hotel.
Summary
The building outside looked as thought the place was a mansion. Inside my room was so small it was it was more like a cupboard. It had a shower but no toilet. I had to go to a room on the landing to use the toilet. The bed was comfortable which was a bonus. There was only one channel on the TV instead of the usual free view. The breakfast was dreadful. The toast was not too bad. There was no tea. Only over boiled coffee. The English breakfast was disgraceful. The egg was small and hard, there were too pale button mushrooms that had no character left and a raw sausage, ok the cook had shown the bacon the grill and the beans were ok cold. The staff were noticable by their absence.
Summary
The room was very small. garden was not as photos showed. The hotel could do with some TLC
Summary
Look it wasn't amazing, small room, saggy beds - a bit like staying at your Gran's house but it was quite cheap. I had to be out early doors so missed the full english breakfast (starts at 0730) but was able to grab some cereal and juice. Some fellow residents came home at 0300 in the morning and were loud but a few bangs and on the partition wall sorted that out. Not sure if that is a regular thing as only there for one night.
Summary
The bedroom was in really poor condition: dirty and very oldish. Not only was the en-suite bathroom very tiny, but we did not manage to have a shower because we got some electricity discharges when willing hot water.
After arguing to have another room, we finally got another room, which was also in poor condition. We had to be careful not to cut our feet with the broken tiles in the bathroom. One advice: don't go there!
The only thing i save about the garth hotel is the exquisite kindness of all the people working there (particularly the polish guy and the italian girl)! £ 70 for a 3 sqm room...is way too much! And i will always remember the not very nice \"fast meeting\" i had on the stairway on saturday night!!!!
Summary
The hotel is easy to find and on a bus route to the heart of the city on a very busy street.
The room I stayed in was basic with twin beds, tiny tv and hand basin. Toilet and shower facilities were up a flight of stairs. Everything is accessible by stairs from the front door to the downstairs reception and breakfast room. Not suitable for anyone with impaired walking (this is not apparent on the web site). The room was clean but numerous lengths of wallpaper were peeling off the wall. (I stayed in room 5). Bedsheets were clean with wool blankets and very washed out bedspreads. Giving the room a very tired feel. Staff were helpful and friendly. Other guests were very noisey till 3am which combined with all night busy traffic made it hard to sleep. It was well heated but cramped. I am glad I only booked one night. The included breakfast was better than I expected. Very handy in terms of location and proximity to London's heart but needs attention to decor and appearance despite the many framed photos and prints that adorn the walls of the stairs and hall.
The room i stayed in was freezing -I have never been so cold in bed-ever.
Summary
You should be paid to stay here. Whatever the price. Very tired Accomodation. Bed in every available space. Plumbing and electrics need urgent attention. No en-suite, wc shared by 3 rooms. Constant running water in our room - Chinese water torture. Is this really a hotel? More like a 1970's B&B truly awful.
Summary
A friend and I went down for a night and this hotel isn't the cleanest. The shower didn't work and it was a bit of a hassle having to walk upstairs to use that and the toilet. Value for money, however, was rather good as it included breakfast and the location was brilliant. Suitable for young lads who just need somewhere to get their heads down for sleep. Not recommended for families.
Summary
It was cheap so I didn't expect much. My bed had terrible broken springs and the shower was blocked so filled up to my ankles in an instant. Worst of all the cleaner just walked in without knocking.

Get what you pay for cheap and cheerful
Summary
There are better looking hotels in Gower Street and the Garth doesn't quite live up to the photos. The room was not well laid out eg the bed is on the wall that used to have a fireplace and I hit my head on the mantlepiece a few times. The W.C/Shower room is very small. On the positive side the staff were friendly and the hotel is only a stones throw from Goodge Street station. The breakfast was cooked when you ordered it as opposed to hanging around and was of good quality. At £405 for a three night stay, I would imagine you could find cheaper for example we paid 99 Euros a night in a Jury's Inn in Dublin but at the Garth Hotel you are right in the heart of London.
Summary
I had a lovely stay for 1 night in this Hotel in a sweet little room with its own shower and sink and toilet just across the corridor.
Summary
No lifts and too many floors toilets and bathroom on lower floor my camper van had better and more space breakfast was good thank you to Andrew who carried our cases up four floors nearly killed us going up and down
Summary
And dirty bathroom, curtains apallingly filthy as was carpet...
Summary
Worst hotel I've stayed in Ever bar none. Overpriced, in need of a total makeover. Smallest bathroom I've ever seen.
Summary
I requested a courtyard facing room. I was given a room on the ground floor on the street side. I asked for a different room but no attempt was made to accommodate this.
Despite putting the mattress from the spare bed against the window the traffic noise was intolerable and I had the worst nights sleep that I remember.

Summary
We stayed one night. recieved a good welcome from reception. accommodation was up to the standard for the price paid. excellent location within walking distance of Kings Cross or Westminster was a very pleasant surprise.
Summary
On arrival the staff were accommodating and friendly, the room was very small and a bit bizarre, with the shower unit almost at the end of the bed. I went for a room with a shower thinking there would be a toilet as well, but there wasn't. The décor was very cheap and tired, as was the furniture, but in fairness essentially clean. The bedding was clean too, but again tired, the mattress was way way past it's best, and so uncomfortable that on the second night I had to get out of bed, half an hour after getting into it, in order to strip the sheets, flip the mattress over and around the other way in a desperate tired attempt to stop the pain it was causing in my lower back, by trying to squeeze some sort of support out of the mattress - not good really and definitely the low point of the stay. I may have got a better mattress on request, but to be honest I don't expect to be asking for things like that in a hotel, surely this could be easily rectified. Breakfast was okay and a bit of a saving grace actually, location was pretty good too, very central, free wi-fi was handy. My overall assessment would be that the hotel is 'tired'. I would have expected to have paid about half for what I actually did - £64 p/n. Travelodge or the like next time.

Myself, my wife & 16 year-old daughter stayed just one night at the Garth. First the good news - Good location, pleasant area, walking distance of two tube stns and several attractions and theatreland. The Entrance hall is loaded with interesting framed pictures etc. We slept well at the rear of the building overlooking what has been a lovely small yukka-filled garden. The room was small but adequate size for a short stay. Beds were comfortable and clean and there were no unpleasant smells. The breakfast was good quality & very well cooked and tasty, the beakfast room was clean as was the crockery & utensils. Cereals, OJ, Coffee/Tea, Toast, Butter, Full English ... Yum.
The staff were perfunctory and barely corteous.
And now the rest -
In the hall landing, a wall light fitting hung from its supply cable. The room decor was oppressive and busy (but that was of little importance to us for one night). The ensuite could not have been smaller and though we managed, it would have been very difficult / impossible for the larger resident or a claustrophobe. It consisted of a shower cubicle and a WC & basin (fitted into less than perhaps the footprint of another 1-1/2 shower cubicles). The toilet seat was loose, the cistern was loose, the towel rail was loose. The toilet roll was not in the holder. The floor tiles were broken and stuck back down unevenly. The sink would have been inadequate to wash a gnat should you want to and the taps were grotty. The grouting was stained & the shower was capable of scalding the unwary user. The wardrobe was unfinished. The TV was a 12" CRT wit 2 terrestrial chanels operating but with ghosting and dreadful audio. Because the basin was so small, the kettle had to be filled by means of a cup. The room was capable of sleepling 4 (1 double & 2 singles) yet they supplied only tea/coffee for 3.
Will not return.
The room I booked was described as singel occupancy 1 double bed and courtyard view (important as I wanted a good nights sleep before a job interviewand did not want to be overlooking a noisy road). The room I was given was twin single beds at the front of the hotel looking onto Gower street (very very noisy). When I challenged this I was told that was the room I had been allocated and the website description was irrelevant. The receptionist was actually very rude. I ended up having to pay an extra £21 to get a room not facing the main road. This room was filthy. All the furniture was dirty. The chair seats were stained. The wall behind the bed had something that looked like dried blood on it. The shower smelt bad and was covered in mildew. The floor in the en-suite had a broken tile in the middle of that had very sharp edges.
On the plus side the breakfast was good.
I never usually give bad reviews but this hotel is HORRID. I have stayed in some budget places in London but this place is disgusting.
In fairness the staff are lovely, but that is the only positive.
The communal shower is adequate but looks grubby. The communal toilet doesn't even have a sink to wash your hands after going to the loo, so there must be germs everywhere.
The blankets in the room smelt really sour and the drain in the sink stank.
The firedoors are blatently just normal doors with fire signs on and the fire exit in the kitchen is blocked by a breakfast table.
There aren't enough tables for all the rooms in the hotel so it is first come, first served at breakfast and there is nowhere to wait for a table.
It is the worst place I have ever stayed.
Stayed in 2 different rooms over 3 days.
Room 7 - v poor bed. Shower fitting fell apart. Sink drained poorly and shower drain smelled.
Room 8 - only 1 power socket for TV, kettle and laptop. Traffic noise very intrusive until 11.30pm and from 5.30am.
all 3 nights - wireless internet did not work and food was basic and the same every day. No imagination.
The rate for the room was inexpensive (75 pounds per night) and appreciated; however, the room was almost miniscule with hardly any room to move around at all. Not pleasing to the eye, everything mismatched. Heating system did not work so room very cold, but the hotel staff were most apologetic. We did not bring it to their notice until the morning so probably our error in not doing so. I would only stay here again in a larger room. The staff did show one to me which might be acceptable next time even though it costs more, See below
Summary
Room clean and tidy, the only critisim is that the beds, though comfy could be more up to date, as they were cheap wooden slatted beds and the focus of the old rooms is a little off with these. Breakfast was simple and good.
Summary
Pleasant, clean and handy for UCL and Euston

Pay the extra and go elsewhere!
The room was an addon to the reception, very small, very noisy and not at all private!

Dirty, no hot water, no toilet in room.
Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and I have backpacked around India and SE Asia!!
Room very small and needed extra shelf/mini table to put things on. Radiator worked but could only be put on full (too hot) or not at all (too cold)....
Very loud traffic noise on Gower St on front facing room was the main problem. Friendly staff. Lobby had a cosy feel to it. Cooked breakfast average but no fresh fruit.....Would have been Ok for about 50 GBP per night - 85 GBP is a bit unbelievable....
The only thing i save about the garth hotel is the exquisite kindness of all the people working there (particularly the polish guy and the italian girl)! £ 70 for a 3 sqm room...is way too much!
