Basic but good

I have stayed at over 30 hotels in the Hyde park area. This Hotel is one of the cheapest, but you do get what you paid for! However, if you are only after a bed to sleep in and won't spend too much time in your room, then its perfectly suited and in a great location in Paddington.

Cheap but.......

The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is rather shabby but there is work going on to renovate it and not before time. My bathroom had a load of tiles missing and falling off the wall and the paper was peeling but the it was clean. The worst thing was that by 7:45am there was no hot water and the shower was freezing. They do offer a left luggage service which was great.

Tired hotel needing a good makeover

The hotel was 'tired' - the paint was chipped in places and the carpets were threadbare in places, it needed a good makeover. The room was very small and there was only one shower room and one toilet for a lot of rooms. The shower room was more a wet room and exceptionally small. My bed had collapsed slightly on one side, so much so that I fell out of it during the night. Rectified by copious amounts of paper under the legs. The room, the shower room and the toilet were clean. I wouldn't stay here again.

At least it didn't cost much and the location was excellent.

My room was on the 3rd floor (or 4th in US terms) with no elevator. They charged for WiFi but at the time I ws told that it wasn't working. The shared shower also wasn't working, although at checkout I was told that I could have used one on the other side of the building. I don't think there was hot water in the room (maybe I didn't wait long enough). Nice view from the window. No eggs at breakfast. Very close to Paddington Station which was what I wanted. I saw one review that complained of bedbugs but I saw absolutely no sign of this.

The only thing I like about this hotel, is its location.

Had to change rooms as the first one had a soaking wet carpet in it, as well as unwashed spoon and saucer left on shelf from previous occupant. Rooms were small and cramped. Breakfast was very basic and for some reason some visitors were offered toast and others not.
Location is the only positive thing I can say about the hotel. And as it's only 2 star I suppose you can expect some of these problems.

Worst hotel I've ever seen in the UK

The hotel is completely derelict building from inside.
For £60 getting single room with no space to put your bag, smelly, noisy, dirty walls and shared bathroom...
There are 3 shared bathrooms, all dirty, old and 2 of them not working (either having only cold water
or taps missing) and all of them are very hard to find, because the hotel is simply a maze with no labels at all.
I haven't dared to try included breakfast, and getting VAT receipt was a problem from the guys on reception.
Parking is paid before 6:30pm.
I travel for last 3 years all over UK, and this was simply the worst experience I had.

Ashley Hotel

I found staying at this hotel pretty pleasant and a good experience.
it was really comfortable staying there even thought a shower and a toilet were shared.
the room has a tiny TV, ramp, tea set, kettle, small sink, and mirror, you wont have any difficulties staying in the room,
However the problem was that the hotel building doesnt have a lift and there is not one who can help you with heavy baggage .
I had to leave my suitcase on the ground floor since my room was on the 4th floor,
I saw an old man cancelled the room after staying his first night because he found it impossible to him to go up and down many times! (he was staying on the 4th floor as well)
If you are young and with very light baggage, you will find staying at this hotel really enjoyable !!!

Only plus point of this hotel is location, just a min away by walk from Paddington station. Newly painted at entrance. From inside it is very basic and when I visted some maintenance works going on. Shared bathroom was soiled and had to clean myself. No lift and going to 4th for with luggage was a challenge. Breakfast was also not great. Toast on request, tea/coffee, juice and bread rolls. No fried or scrambled egg. I should have gone bit away from central London to get much better accommodation for same price. I will not recommend for anyone and will never stay there again.

Excellent location, 5 mins from Paddington Station. Good value for money however, room very small and decor dated. Good value basic hotel

Stayed in one of the basic single rooms. Perfectly adequate (and good value for money). This was on the 4th Floor though (no lift) and the nearest shared toilet was on the 2nd Floor, and I only noticed one of these toilets on each staircase.
So possibly not for those prone to nocturnal calls of nature, and also be warned of congestion at peak times (whilst I was using the toilet in the morning there were several attempts to gain access, so beware if you leave it to the last moment!)
Having said all that, this is a good value clean basic hotel, and I would stop here again.

We stayed for one night at the Ashley hotel. The location was the selling point for this hotel. I was aware that it wasn't going to be great. I guess you get what you pay for! To be honest as a base for travelling around London, it is ideal as it's so near Paddington. My advice would be to go with no expectations of polite customer service and amazing facilities!

Ashley Hotel, London

A pleasant stay with no issues. The place doesn't stand out from the exterior as it is integrated as part of essentially a 'square' of hotels and accomodation but once inside I found the staff to be welcoming and the interior pleasant and cosy. I was dealt with quickly and efficiently at the reception desk, which is open 24 hours a day.
My room (a single room) was small in size but fitted with everything I required for a one night stay including a TV (terrestrial channels only), tea and coffee making facilities and a fan. On first entry the room seemed quite stuffy but on returning after my evenings activities it was much more bearable, even without the fan or having to open a window. The en-suite facilities were very much on the small side, with the sink practically inside the shower cubicle, but they were all functioning correctly and the lack of space proved no hinderance. The bed was comfortable and provided a pleasing nights sleep. The one minor issue was that without un-plugging the TV, which would have proved difficult given it's position behind the bed, there was only one plug socket available, but this is only a small qualm.
I should mention that during my stay (11/09/2010) there was some renovation work going on in the hallway approaching the dining area following a recent leak, I am unsure when this work will be completed but to my knowledge it does not affect any of the rooms.
The breakfast was lacking somewhat in options available (tea/coffee, juice, cereal, croissants/bread, toast on request) but was kept well stocked and replenished and could not be faulted for quality, especially the toast which was lovely!
Overall at £38 thanks to LateRooms I think the Ashley provided excellent value for money, especially compared to the quotes I was given for many similar establishments across London. I would definitely stay there again.

The Ashley was cheap enough

The Ashley was cheap and comfortable enough to warrant the £42.00 per night, cheap by London standards, especially in that part of town. Contrary to some of the other reviews we had hot water. The breakfast was simple, croissants, jam, and cereal, but what do you expect for that money in a 2 star hotel?

Great location, basic facilities, but good value for money if booked online.

I was travelling to London for a friend's birthday, and getting cheap accommodation was more important than luxury. Hence, I booked the Ashley Hotel for £40 per night for a single room.
I'll try and do this systematically.
The first criterion: location. This really could not be better. You practically fall over this hotel as you leave Paddington tube station. There are literally hundreds of hotels in the area.
Second we have customer service. The receptionist was friendly and efficient, and the reception seemed to be staffed most of the time. I wasn't offered help with my bags, but I wasn't expecting that. If you can't get your case up several flights of stairs, don't stay here!
Third - the room. My room was small. It had a regular sized single bed, a desk with a wash basin, a chair, and a wardrobe, and very little floor space. That said, the bed was soft and comfortable, I had a working TV and the wardrobe even had coat hangers in it (I wasn't expecting that!) Everything in the room was spotlessly clean.
I had to use the shared bathroom, which was two flights of stairs up and the entire width of the building away. This did not make me happy. I suspect I disturbed a lot of other residents when going to the bathroom. The bathroom itself was moderately clean, though very scruffy. The shower cubicle was not dirty but it was stained, so the shower was not a relaxing experience. I would not stay here again unless I got an en suite.
And that's really the problem. The room was really not worth £40 per night, but by London standards, it was okay. An en suite room would be worth £40, but you're not likely to get it for less than £60 even online. Under no circumstances pay the rates at the hotel itself!
Final comments: a basic, but acceptable hotel, suffering from ridiculous London price inflation.
In no way horrible. Clean, comfortable room. But, only really worth it if you can get a good deal on an en suite.

The hotel is basic but for an overn ight stay suitable for my convenience and requirements. It was chosen for the cost and proximity to Paddington Railway Station. The room was on the top (4th) floor to which I had to carry my suitcase, but one doesn't expect a lift in an economy hotel. The room had a television and tea/coffee making facilities but with a shared bathroom/toilet on another floor and in another section of the hotel on the same floor.
Reception closes about 10.00 p.m. so the key is kept when out for the evening. Reception staff are polite and helpful.
The continental breakfast is good.

Yikes!

Honestly? well, the staff member at the reception was very welcoming and the cleaning lady who was just cleaning behind the entrance door was happy and bubbly too... and thats where the positives ended.
the room was tiny, the size of a shoe box, the bed was old, the matress was so soft that when i sat on it, if became as flat as a 10 pence piece. the radio was probably from world war 2, with only 2 stations that worked, the tv was tiny with a height and angle that could barely be seen from the bed. the tea and coffee provided were the cheapest of the cheap (they tasted stale). there was a window that over looked a brick wall, and at the bottom of the wall was a pile of rubbish.
The toilets were outside the room (which i was aware of before hand) but, they were on different floors to the room i was staying in. The shower was broken (again on a different floor to the room and the toilet) and the door wouldn't lock properly in the shower room...
But at least it was close to the tube station...
Never staying here again...

No luggage store

You get what you pay for. Reasonable accommodation for the price. Convenient location for Paddington Station. Only drawback(and a major one as we didn't want to spend all day carrying our luggage around London) was no facilities to leave your luggage after you had checked out. So we had to use the left luggage office at Paddington Station (platform 12) at an extra cost of £16. Which when added to the cost of the hotel makes it less good value and so not recommended.

I was nicely suprised

The area the hotel is situated is perfect, you are still in the big city but you just can't feel it, it's a small park outside, not much trafic, while just a road away you can experience the big London. My room wasn't spacious, bathroom in the corridor, but I chose it because of the price, that was £30 per night, which is good for London. Overall it is worth trying if you do not mind having continental breakfast only(it should be an option to order English one while it isn't)
The bedding was clean, towels changed daily. It was ok.
