Stylish place, convenient location and wonderful, helpful staff

The Academy was smart, but friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for the helpful and pleasant staff. I was lucky to get a good rate for the room, due to the facade refurbishments, as I'd normally not think to stay in Bloomsbury - but I would have been happy to pay more - the facilities were lovely. The lounge and tranquil garden was an oasis. And, I didn't hear much traffic noise in the room - and it's central London! I've already recommended it to a number of friends and have booked to stay there again myself too.

Perfect last minute find

I stayed at The Academy last week for one night only after having found it on late rooms.com. It was an absolute bargain given it's location. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and I was offered an upgrade as soon as I arrived for no extra cost. I indulged in the cooked breakfast the next morning, which was very tasty (although there was 50% off the cost, so this may have made it more palatable).
It is a gorgeous building and inside it has been decorated in a style appropriate to the age of the house. It feels very comfortable and homely.

Expensive, shabby and cold...

This room was expensive and cold! The TV didn't work, the shower had black mould all over it and the windows rattled...

Great centrally located hotel, lovely service, very polite and welcoming staff.
only a couple of small niggles, we were in a room at the very top of the hotel, and there was no outlook due to re-furbishing work being carried out .We felt claustrophobic in an already small room, would have preferred to be given the option of staying while improvements were being carried out!
The other problem was getting woken up by workmen early whilst on a relaxing break!
Would stay again though, without the workmen :)

Ideal

The hotel is in an ideal location for walking around the main areas of London. There are plenty of small cafes and restaurants within a 5 minute walk to cater for every diet.
However, the hotel is situated on a busy road, so if you are on the front of the accommodation the sound of the traffic can be a bit annoying at night - the windows would benefit from double glazing (in addition to the original style windows, which are probably required by law/planning) instead of secondary glazing, so as to reduce the sound.
Additionally, if you are elderly, ensure you have a room near the ground floor, as we saw no evidence of lifts/elevators.
Would definitely go back and use the hotel again. Also thinking of using their sister hotel in Edinburgh - The Glasshouse - as the staff are all courteous, hotel is clean and tidy, and you are left alone to enjoy your stay!!

London weekend

Stayed two nights at this comfortable hotel. We used the restaurant for breakfast only and were very pleased with the choice and quality. The decor was generally good - traditional but not too fussy and the garden was pretty. The people who we saw were helpful and friendly. I scored 5/6 for quality of room due to the size of the shower room, as it was tiny and the curtains/cushions could have done with a refurb as curtains did not pull together and cushions a little shabby. The value for money score was lower due to this as well. Unfortunately the heavy fire doors were put to good use by other guests early in the morning and we were wakened - and kept awake - by the loud banging as they swooped shut - sound deadener strips would be a plus. The position is excellent though - just round the corner from The British Museum and not too much of a walk to Covent Garden etc.
